RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 30, 2013 The 4F at Pye Bridge is remarkable for what else in the the image apart from the train; the lack of any road traffic, the street lights, the blind arches in the bridge, the flora particularly on the left. Also the way the road leads away to the right under the bridge past the buildings. Classic diorama composition stuff! On first sight I felt it had a hint of Colin Gifford about it. I hope Dave finds that a compliment!
OldSutt
Re 'Great Bentley 309625 Liverpool St to Clacton Nov 79 J6664' That took me back to the early 70's and commuting. The smell of Bacon on the early trains and the chink of miniatures on the evening ones. Thanks for sharing a great selection of photos.
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 30, 2013 On first sight I felt it had a hint of Colin Gifford about it. I hope Dave finds that a compliment! Thanks very much - it's actually one of Dad's, I always think he took very good pictures. All the pre 1969 colour ones are his, later ones are a mix - J file numbers are his, C or D file numbers are mine. David

Friar Tuck
The 4F at Pye Bridge is remarkable for what else in the the image apart from the train; the lack of any road traffic, the street lights, the blind arches in the bridge, the flora particularly on the left. Also the way the road leads away to the right under the bridge past the buildings. Classic diorama composition stuff! The lack of road traffic does seem odd, as this was the A613. Maybe it was a Sunday morning? The blind arches are not quite blind. The River Erewash flows through the right-hand arch. I assume they must have had problems with subsidence, as the site was close to iron and coal mining activity. The partial filling of the arches was probably a strengthening measure. Just behind the photographer was the Great Northern Railway's Pinxton branch. In earlier years, a link from the GN to the Midland line crossed the main road about halfway between the house on the left and the 4F.

As it was in October it could be a Saturday, Sunday or the Monday or Tuesday of half term (it was only 2 days then) as I was there. Saturday and Sunday are less likely as we would probably have been doing something connected with sailing as it wouldn't be too cold then. The road was often very quiet in those days. Meanwhile I came across this photo of Dad's car at the time, at Pye Bridge. Dad's Jaguar MkIX Pye Bridge October 1963 David

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 31, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2013 A few for the evening - a bit early as you might be doing something else later on - or in case you can't focus too well by the end of the evening. RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted January 2, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2014 55013: the signalman's car (?) has two of the tyres covered. As it was August perhaps it was to prevent them getting too much sun? Strange whatever the reason. This thread is probably the old pictures version of an I Pod thingy that plays random music tracks on (shuffle). There are just so many great detail things for us to pick out. Thanks Dave and have a great 2014. Phil @36E
