American O Scale: "Portway Terminal Short Line, MN".

I racked my brain for examples of American diesel ugliness all the way thru' my Weetabix this morning and, of course, obviously, surely the best example, no arguments, why didn't we all chant it together last Thursday at 8pm is that GE ( yes American-built diesel), built at Erie, PA where breath-taking beautiful designs have regularly been churned out ... the Class 70 :o:o:diablo_mini::diablo_mini::help::heat::heat:

That's a nice tribute to Jack. This forum just hasn't been the same since he departed.

His contributions and encouragement were always an inspiration to those of us who chose to model small US switching layouts.

I have my feet firmly back firmly on the 'darkside'  and it's nice to see modellers like yourself still soldiering on with this forum despite the apparent reduction in interest over the last few years.

C'mon Mal what was the 'spelling mistake' you edited (4th post above)?  You didn't by any chance say ... SOLDERING ON instead of 'soldiering on'?  Now there is no escape!!

The difference is, is you dropped that from a height, there wouldn't be much left...

That's very good! I like the idea of this well known name on the cab!

On one of Ray/'Long Island Jack's layouts - 59th & Rust IIRC - he had a road trailer with "Shortliner Trucking - The Route to the North" written on it, or something like that anyway. It was at the TVNAM meet that Jack himself came down for, 2014 I think.

Another teeny bit of progress, this time with the scenics.

Starting with the grandly- or optimistically!! - titled Interchange Yard, laying down some of the basic ground cover, and a start on the ballasting, using the usual "wet water spray/dilute PVA from an eye dropper" method. Only another HOW MANY??!!?? yards of track to go??!!

I keep saying this is a Long Term layout - now it's really gonna feel like it!!!

Anyway a few pics to keep everyone happy - although the sight of Woodland Scenics ballast might not be welcome in some circles! But it's what I have & it works for me, plus, the weight of real granite chippings can mount up somewhat, a factor I keep in mind as the 'benchwork' is a relatively light-weight affair....

I've been laying a bit more ground cover around the layout - a mix of Woodland Scenics blended turf, T49 Green & T50 Earth, spooned into my own home-made 'shaker' - an old Sandwich Paste bottle with holes put in the lid - and sprinkled over PVA glue spread around on the boards. The mortal remains of the original HO layout are fast disappearing...

I've also used Chinchilla sand mixed with some fine ballast for one of the hardstanding areas by the Depot at Portway Center, which is the Interchange Yard between Short Line & Class 1.

As I did on the old portable layout, I glued wood strips around the footprint of the building, and smoothed filler up to that. Once dry, the ground cover is taken right up to the edge of the building or platform, so it looks bedded in, but is still removable...

Oops!

Sorry guys, I can't remember what I had for tea yesterday, let alone something that was discussed six years ago. Forgive me - that gorgeous Portway Terminal RR RS3!!

Re the RS3, relax guys, it's Confession Time 😳

I have a dreadful habit of often only weathering one side of a loco or item of rolling stock.

So on one side (& both ends) - the side you always see - my RS3 is weathered up, detailed with a handbrake chain & rerailing frog on brackets, modern hi-viz stripes, and lettered for the Portway Terminal....

On the other side,  she's still a D&H machine. I got as far as weathering the trucks, then clearly lost interest or couldn't be bothered. ....

Maybe I should confess in the Model Railway Crimes Thread..??!!

I couldn't remember either. Went back to check, and it was here...

My response was the next post. I kept quiet about my bad habit at the time!!! :mosking:

Of course a roundy-roundy, you never get to see the 'other' side.  Just like the Moon and -for now - Pluto.  Prototype for everything!!

Now be careful John.  As you get older and, if you're like me, the fingers get stiffer and bulkier (I'll have to give up trying to learn the guitar again and stick to playing the drums) indulging your hidden desire for O-scale will be the only way to get that tingle :heat: :yahoo_mini:
