Just found out wife and daughter are both away next Sunday from 5am until midnight. I'll just have to make sure I don't spill varnish on the carpet........................

In the absence of 2 SWMBO's I managed to put up the 4 main boards today to have a play with extending the plan slightly.

The north-west end of the prototype site is full of parallel-ish sidings

My original plan only has two sidings, but if I wanted to add another, they would effectively be too short to be usable - so I've decided to make the scenic section longer.

 

This is the extra siding (actually taken out on the first revision, but re-added with another point. The revision is in red.

And in the meantime, a Manchester-Clitheroe 150/2 passes by....

The original plan ended where the paper is, but I'm extending the sidings to at least half-way along the plain board. The storage sidings will be beyond that and have yet to be built.

 

I've also managed to apply a layer of varnish underneath the boards to seal against any future moisture ingress - or at least minimise it. No varnish spilt on the floor!

 

Next job will be to seal the tops and outer sides.

Hi Andy,

The regular freight is usually 3-4 times per week Fidler's Ferry PS-Newbiggin and return gypsum. A daily DRS hauled NDS service (Carlisle-Crewe 6K05). The Carlisle-Chirk Colas logs have been erratic of late, usually running via the WCML, but 56087 turned up last Saturday. If they need extra coal at FFPS, then there's a Freightliner HHA or HXA set one way and a thrice weekly Clitheroe-Avonmouth and return cement.

 

Other stuff does turn up from time to time - it's often used as a route for engineering trains traveling to/from Crewe or Carlisle to weekend possessions.

And a daily RHTT during the leaf fall.

 

Other trains are railtours to/from the S&C, often steam hauled, as well as Carnforth/Hellifield/Blackburn/Preston/Carnforth circular used to test locos from WCRC at Carnforth. And random yellow trains obviously!

Probably yes, but I'm not short of siding space down that side as those two roads will be extended round the back of what I think is the low building that is "Road 18" at the site. In much the same way as they run parallel to the London Road bridge.

More time and space this weekend as both SWMBO's are away from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. All I have for company is three cats and a set of baseboards awaiting a (pretty much 100% certain) final trackplan and laying out of cork underlay.

 

Hopefully, I'll start to work in the gentle incline as the main line climbs away from the Way and Works Junction towards Long Eaton. (Ta to Bozzer for the route video and track.signalling plan)

A quick update.

A couple of days ago, I managed to cut out and lay most of the underlay in the pointwork area within the depot sidings.

 

This is it with the points laid in place.

The saw cuts are the start of the gentle incline on the main line.

I'm home alone again for two days! So after a busy few weeks with stock and exhibitions with New Bryford, I managed to set up the boards for DL again for some work.

 

The cork for the mainline has now been laid and glued down with PVA.

The cork I'm using was obtained on a holiday to Portugal (large rolls and very cheap) and is a very coarse, open grain, so glue can seep through. Before weighing it down, I cover the cork with scrap plastic bags.

This prevents the boards that I use to cover it from sticking to the cork.

The weight is added with whatever is nearby. Spare bricks from the house extension!

I'll remove the weights, boards and sheets tomorrow morning to let any exposed PVA finally cure. Plan is to cut some flexi-track sections to fit between the pointwork, in preparation for tracklaying to commence soon.

The bags were removed this morning and the surface PVA left to dry out properly.

Just laid in place at the moment pending holes being cut for the point motors. When it's fully glued down, I'll jiggle a few of the sleepers around so that there are no odd gaps.

As a break from writing up NB, I've been progressing tracklaying on DL.

 

Before glueing down any track, I've marked where the rails cross the baseboard joints and inserted a brass screw. Set at a suitable height just below the base of the rail

Holes are drilled for the point motor operating rods

And covered over with brown paper - as the rod only needs a small hole, these will be pierced through later.

This is the first section of track to be laid - I use a thin layer of Evostik and then place the track down and wiggle it around to grip the glue. It is then covered with a thin piece of wood and weighted down overnight.

Back to the joint - when the track is laid, I cut out the sleepers that would foul the screws - in this case, an offset screw means that I cut a half sleeper. The gaps will be refilled later when the screw heads are cut down

Once the glue has set overnight, I've soldered the rail to the screw.

And then cut the rail with a razor saw.

The excess screw head will be ground away and cosmetic sleepers will be glued in to disguise the joint.

 

The other big task today was to cut out for the Peco inspection pits in the main EDU shed - pics later.

Looks interesting. We plan to have a lift up access point....so this will be worth checking out.

 

The brass screw joint should be a more scenically acceptable version than the huge lumps of copper clad strip on New Bryford!

To set the height of the brass screws, I use a scrap piece of track with a couple of sleepers cut away.

I slide it gently back and forth over the screw, gradually adjusting the height of the screw until it just clears.

Then move onto the next screw - I've only got about 100 to do!

Believe it or not, there is an emerging layout under this building site!

The mainline is starting to take shape with the first section of concrete sleepered track in place. The prototype has about 60-90' of wooden sleepers from the main crossover.

Two of the three main EDU shed roads now have their inspection pits in place, but no pics yet.

 

There won't be much happening here for the next 10 days or so as attention moves to New Bryford and York ex at Easter.

Over the weekend, I picked up the last two points and this evening a boxful of Tortoise point motors from Kevin at Coastal DCC via SteveatBax courier services!
