While it is easy to trivialise the Bluebell's disappointment, relative to other events in the implausible but hideous circs we currently endure, the fact that those pioneers did what they did 60 years ago does deserve substantial recognition. I hope the decks are sufficiently clear in 2021 for the railway to blow its own trumpet properly.

Thanks Ian,

Yes lets hope its all a big hum-dinger of a Gala next year.

The other thing that will help is that the East Grinstead part of network rail will be cleared for locos to be delivered by rail.

Regards, Neal.

1928 Pullman Car 76 has been sold (it has been announced). Does anyone know to whom and where? Would be a shame for it to be stuffed and mounted at a pub or similar. Hopefully an operational future somewhere (after a good restoration)?

Hosking at Margate?

Or a flock of similar pullman cars (Peco, Petworth (a shame as this would be major interior alterations))?

Private owner, private location, but NOT LEAVING the COUNTY and joining a flock of similar.....  :)

That was the cryptic message I got again today. Unless of course there is another one or different one on the move. But don’t think so.

Ok. So some confusion on the part of the person supplying the info to me. We were at crossed purposes and he was on about another coach, but dunno for sure.

This morning 09018 ran Light engine, HK to SP, to shunt the Pullman coach on to the tram way.

On to the low loader, oop north, Carnforth area, as it is a steel bodied version it requires a specialist over haul, when compared with the wooden bodies versions. Then who knows, perhaps mainline? But will depend on the spec of the overhaul etc I guess. But better than it rotting away here.

They are indeed!

https://www.old-station.co.uk/

Still in very good external order last September.  I wasn't able to see inside on that occasion but had done so on an earlier visit when I was able to see that - whilst significantly altered internally - the work is to a high standard and they are very  comfortable indeed.

Why was the 66 there?

The photo isn’t recent. It was taken in December 2019, when the first two MK3 sleepers 10693 and 10690 were brought in by rail. GBRF’s 66725 and 66701 top and tailed the train. These two sleepers have short swing links on their B10 bogies so they worked their last scheduled trains on the network and were brought in by rail.

The other two MK3 sleepers, 10526 and 10605, have long swing links on their B10 bogies so are not permitted over Network Rail third rail routes. So they came by road in July 2020.

Having stayed over in the ex Travelling College coach and the ex-Queen of Scots mk1 at various times I bet these are a step up, the former probably being quite waterlogged by now

Agreed, they will be once they have been allocated a power supply suitable for MK3 sleepers......and it has been paid for and then programmed in for installation, together with suitable drainage.

The MK1 sleeping accommodation was great, especially after a hard working day followed by a large quantity of ale. With a large quantity of ale you didn’t tend to notice how rough and basic the accommodation was. Boil in the summer and freeze in the winter :no2:.......it was ‘of its time, and that time is long over’.

Just a couple of shots of Blackmore Vale in the dock road at the Park.

Would be nice to see it back in traffic once again. Maybe in something other than Southern Green, which we don’t have any matching coaches. Maybe in BR lined green with either early or late emblems. Bound to wind a few people up with that dangerous and seditious opinion,....god forbid anything is allowed to be changed.

Ive always thought how well presented 21C123 looks.

How many years has it been out of traffic now ?

I assume its had repaints in that time to keep it looking so well ?

here it is on 24th Oct 2003.

East Grinstead looked like this...

Found this photo of the ballast train at Kingscote, it is from the day of the ballast drop at the ‘Eye Hospital’. This was following the rectification works to the localised slack, short twist faults and two panels of slurried track ballast; which was caused by a visiting tamper crew, a couple of years back, setting the tamping tines too deep for the F27 sleepers and puncturing the geo textile membrane. A couple of years later and the cycle of prolonged wet winters and hot summers caused the track geometry to rapidly deteriorate such that the short twist fault values required traffic to be prohibited until it could be rectified.

The three Dogfish ballast hopper wagons, Queen Mary Brake and BR Class 09 make a classic short ballast train. Fortunately these days the availability of technology means that we no longer have to use Shark brake vans to plough the ballast as the RRV does all this as well as the majority of other tasks on site.

With the great Heljan Dogfish ballast hoppers, Bachmann Queen Mary Brake and either Bachmann or Hornby BR Class 09 it ought to be possible to recreate this train in OO gauge quite easily. D4106 (09018) propelling the train into position ready to start the ‘stone’.

During the next run the weather gods smile on the ballast crew. At this time the NHS was still being clapped every Thursday and the NHS rainbow was the message.

I don't think people are adverse to change but repainting it into BR green is not not exactly novel. In the 80's except for Standards it was rare to see a loco in BR green now it's rare to see anything in other than BR liveries - for those of us who grew up in the  70's and 80's big 4 liveries on kettles was a nice antidote to almsot uniform banger blue on BR. Now its the other way round.

Toally agree. These nice bright colours make a refreshing change from the quite dull BR green.

I don’t think that some people are averse to change but a great number of people are. A phrase often heard is ‘because we’ve always done it like that’.
I take your point about BR Standards and steam locos in BR livery. Probably BR livery is often used as it is one that locos from various ages did share. As far as I remember BMV has only been out of Southern livery once during preservation and there aren’t any coaches to match the Southern livery it wears on the railway. I grew up in the BR Blue era and so it was when I joined BR. Funny how diesels are only acceptable at certain railways if they are painted green, even if they never ran in green (33/1s, except for one). or only ran in green for a few months etc. The same argument wouldn’t be tolerated if someone suggested painting an S15 into LBSC IEG, for example.
