kandc_au
My entry is basically a copy of the plans directly from one of allan books. Buildings are re-arranged to suit the available space. To me it was about learning new technique's, which I have and enjoyed.
RMweb Premium 47137 Posted January 23, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2014 Rendered cottage with a tiled roofA cottage intended for a 4mm scale layout This model was inspired by Allan's articles in the Railway Modeller in the mid-1970s, and the design uses some of his techniques. There are some construction details in my thread started 12 November 2013. - Richard.
mullie
Building this model made me completely reconsider the exit to my layout. Like most people I looked at the conventional things such as bridges and tunnels. What I've created here is a view blocker that in my view will be more effective. This is real retro modelling, card bits of envelope etc. combined with Scalescenes flint paper and Wills windows. Painted with acrylics, weathered with charcoal as steam locos will be passing right by it on the layout. All sealed with Games workshop purity seal. Due to file size restrictions I've created a slideshow on You tube of the final model. There is no washing on the line as that would mean the model would have to be set on a Monday, the year is irrelevant until the advent of modern washing machines, it would have to be a Monday. This was the traditional wash day at least in the part of the world where I grew up. The washing line is even slightly wonky as this seems to be how most of them were. What also isn't there is the Jack Russell nicking the pegs out of the washing basket, at least that's what ours always did!I didn't buy anything for this project apart from some model scene dustbins which were toned down with games workshop washes and Scalescenes flint paper. Everything else came from the spares box. The two birds are eyeing up the veg and what is not visible in this shot is the bird cr*p painted on the ridge!Garden is garden wire, Woodland Scenics, static grass, hanging basket liner, on a bed of DAS modeling clay painted with artists acrylics. Washing line is cocktail sticks and handrail wire coloured with artists pastels. Inspiration came from looking at Stiffkey in Norfolk though it looks nothing like anything there. Basic dimensions taken from a 'Downes' article (MRC Oct 77) then concocted into what you now see. In other words, modelling in the best Blue Peter traditions!! Of course you've realised the model is low relief!

brightspark
The Undershot Watermill. 4mm scale Card. This is based on Alan Downes plans posted here. My model differs in that I modelled it as a brick structure in the style found in Surrey/Sussex/Hampshire. My thinking is that this may end up on a layout based in that area. I have tried some techniques new to me. That is brick paper for walls and the yard and card strips for the tiles. Normally I model in plasticard so this has been a nice chance to try something different and learn something new. The thread describing the build can be found here. Good luck everyone Andy Edit to update photos
33040
(Part of) The Timber Yard. Decided to enter when I found my copy of Downes Plans last week while searching for something else following a recent house move. 4mm scale, intended as a test piece for a forthcoming layout. The main shed of the timber yard is modelled as a storage unit with concrete hard-standing to the front and sides. Mainly 1mm & 2mm grey-board, sandpaper as roof, tin foil as the guttering in the valley and plastic downpipe. Currently unpainted .......
