pipparooba
i did find that doin the wiring with the layout on its side to be far far easier than to struggle led on your back i did also use some peco wire clips. . they come with a sticky pad but i choose to use a little glue so safe measure. . .it will not be long before you have a loco running another tip clean your track before you test ive just spent the last week cleaning all my loco and track because they were dirty but i didnt know the track was dirty til i got the liquid track cleaner out i thought just the rubber ones would be ok look forward to your next update cheers ian
hoover50008
As the weather was so nice this weekend I spent most of it in the garden to keep the War Department happy. However I did manage to get a few bits done to Wickersham. I finished construction of the basic platform shape using Peco concrete platform edging and Wills paving sheets for the top. These will now require painting before fixing permanently in to place. After much deliberation on what I was going to use for uncoupling I decided to go down the road of fitting metal droppers made from staples to the Bachmann small tension lock couplings, I have fixed magnets under the board using super glue and these seem to work quite well. I will modify more couplings once I have finally decided what stock will be required on the layout. E
pipparooba
It is a great way to uncouple do I see right you have a peace a wire hanging down ? When I did mine I only but the wire at a 90 to the tention lock but used high power magnets. Hope this helps. Cheers Ian

The picture shows the wire (staple) drawn down by the magnet in the uncoupled position. Agreed it is a good way to uncouple and so simple. E
hoover50008
Been fitting Lenz decoders to the MLV ans 2 2EPB's today. Why do Bachmann and others for that matter make it so difficult to remove the bodies when there are so many fiddly bits to damage. Surely in this day and age it would be easy to have a slot in card similar to an SD card that could be easily fitted in the chasis. We live and hope. hoover50008
Good progress made today. I finished off the platform, just need to paint it now. 73126 and 09022 were posed for effect. I placed the bus shelter style waiting room and ticket kiosk in place just to see how it looked and I'm happy with that. Also decided to start laying in the 3rd Rail a job I was not looking forward to. Despite it taking most of the afternoon to do 8ft it wasn't as fiddly as I thought it would be. The worst job was drilling the sleepers.

hoover50008
Any updates ?. Cheers, Bob. Hi Bob Haven't really done much recently, been distracted by real trains on the SDR. I will try and post some updates this week. E
hoover50008
I have been guilty of not updating this post of late due in main to lack of inspiration. SHMBO wasn't happy with the way the station appeared and to be honest I had to agree with her as I can't say I was entirely happy with it myself. So what next then, back to the drawing board or back to the original plan of an engineers yard well a combination of both really. One of my interests in non revenue earning rolling stock so I wanted to include that be it an engineers siding at minimum, my other interest is diesel depots and before you all groan and say not another depot layout I have worked in one for the last 30 years so the final result will be a combination of both. I was going to leave the engineers siding as just that but as I had a Bachmann single road shed I decided to use that for wagon repairs, however it can also be utilized for locomotive servicing or repair should the need arise. The locomotives will mainly be serviced on the fuel point at the other end of the layout. The track plan has been slightly changed since the last pictures and has been ballasted and sprayed, the 3rd rail has also been removed from the lower level. I have also installed the lighting and this has made a huge difference bringing the layout to life. The fuelling point is at the West End of the depot here occupied by 08839, there is still quite a bit of work to do here especially to the tank road at the rear. The fuel storage tanks at the back of the tank road. Heading East we arrive at the Shunters cabin, this is a Bachmann Red Star Parcels building in reverse. It is obviously Sunday as there is time for a quick car wash. Not a brilliant picture but it shows the lighting system under the pelmit. Looking East along the layout we find a pair of 33's sharing the shed. 08839 trundles back down the yard. A closer inspection finds 33004 and 33202 on shed. The PW inspectors office is located opposite the depot. There is time for a quick cuppa before setting off in the Escort van to the next job. Behind the shed we find an old Grampus wagon full of junk. The depot entrance can be found at the East end of the yard, a Commer van is heading off out of the yard. There is still loads to do so I will endeavour to update a bit more often as I go along now, E

However, I have my neodymium magnets above the baseboard and was interested to see your are strong enough to work from underneath. Would you mind tell me what sizes your magnets are and if you know the pulling power? Cheers Dave Smith Falcon Road TMD and Oil Drum Lane. See Layouts. pipparooba
wow its been so long but looking good the idea of uncoupling with the staples is a good idea i manage to show my layout a few months ago and have booking now for next year and people just look bewildered when i can just pull up shunt back and forth and just drive off. i do like the all look of the layout. ..keep up the great work cheers ian
dasatcopthorne
Hi Dave They are 15mm x 5mm N50 Neodium magnets from a well known auction site. E Cheers, E. They might save me digging up some track for new magnets to be fitted. It's always difficult to know what size/strength to use for a given situation. Mine are 12 x 3mm and are sold in florists as Corsage magnets by Oasis. around £10 for 30. Cheers again. Dave

hoover50008
As the weather was so bad today I thought it would be time to tidy this mess up. I have now completed the two jumpers across the board and tidied the rest of the wiring up, looking to start the control panel once I can source a suitable box to make it with. hoover50008
Made a start on the fuel point today. I opted for the Knightwing kit rather than the ready made Bachmann one as the roof doesn't look convincing to me. It wasn't a surprise that the base of the Knightwing kit doidn't fit between the rails as it was a bit of an after thought but no problem as I will scratch build my own. I found an old piece of Peco platform that will fit the bill nicely so I cut a hole to suit in the Fab Foam and packed the centre out to sleeper level with plasticard for support.. I temporarily fitted the base to give an idea of what it will look like and check it will fit. Think I will paint the fuel stanchions yellow as in this shot of 08645. hoover50008
Work has been progressing on the fuelling point and fuel off loading siding. Both are Knightwing kits and modified to suit. The fuel point painted and located in place. The fuel off loading point is coming along but still needs a bit more work to complete. A general view of the stabling point. A rare visitor in the shape of Class 27 5377 drops in for fuel. hoover50008
Just a quick update on the latest progress. I have finished painting the fuel point, although it looks a bit garish it still needs to be toned down a bit. Made a start on painting some figures although not entirely happy with the poses. The fuel offload point has now been painted, the rails have also been painted although the whole are needs a liberal helping of grime. Finally the fuel attendant's kiosk has been detailed but I am still unsure where it will be planted yet. I have also been painting barrels and associated bits and pieces you would expect to find around a fuel point. E
hoover50008
There has been a real down turn in the local docks due to the recession and as such there is no longer a need to allocate 3 shunters at East Wickersham. With this in mind BR have taken the step of closing the traction maintenance depot and hand the yard over to the CCE and S&T Dept. They have wasted no time in removing the loco shed and reverting the fuel point back to just a concrete hard standing. There will still be one class 08 out stationed at East Wickersham to shunt of the few remaining freight services and the local fuel depot although it is unclear how long this will remain before the train engine has to do it's own shunting. The view of East Wickersham is now totally changed and you would never know that the traction maintenance depot ever existed. The Civil Engineers now occupy the space and busy themselves loading their lorry for some up coming engineering works. The crew bus heads out to a reported bridge strike nearby. Whilst the S&T boys are having a quiet day as their van is still in the yard. Some of the previous yard flor is just visible behind the van. The remaining class 08 on this occasion 08839 waits it's next shunt. Other jobs that have been undertaken are to make all the point manually operated to cut down on the wiring. I have used code 60 rail with a piece of wire soldered at right angles supported by chocolate blocks for this purpose and it works quite well. hoover50008
Things have been progressing well on EW. I am happy with the way the points are operated know and it really is simplicity in itself and less wiring. They are proving to be quite reliable. Most of the other work is really detailing. I have painted the wooden sleepers and now just need to add some greenery around then to disguise them a bit more. They fit in quite well with the condenmed Gramous wagon which has some of the old sleepers loaded on it. The Coles crane has now been fitted in the yard and rope slings added to add a bit more realism to the lorry being loaded in the CE yard. Some local residents now go about there business in the flats overlooking EW. And finally the shunter operated ground frame and token machine which control the entrance and exit from EW is in position. I may add some railings to this in due course. The other job I need to tackle is to add more shrubbery ie Budliea and brambles the usual kind of thing found around railway yards, lighting is also an issue as I can't really find any yard lights that I particularly like. I still need to install the rest of the magnets under the board for uncoupling once I have decided where they need to go. Still happy with the way things are going now so fingers crossed it will be finished shortly. E

hoover50008
I know what you mean about yard lights! I had the same problem so ended up making my own! Hi mate Yeah it's strange as none seem really prototypical all to generic. I may have to make them but don't really want to go that way unless I really have to, mind you after seeing the ones you made that may be the best way to go.
