I don't understand the question. It sounds rather hyperthetical.

For what one?

As D9020 Nimbus says, "printers's". It is an error, but the society does not accept responsibility for errors, so I was just asking who does accept responsibility for this one.

Dealt with on an individual circumstances basis. No responsibility or liability need be attached or accepted.

I'm happy to have errors pointed out, but I don't want to get involved with apportioning blame.

Hi Grahame,

Thanks for another great journal.

And I was delighted to read your comment that there has been a significant upturn in the number of submissions you have received. Good to be able to read about the modelling others are doing, and the techniques they're willing to share.

Cheers

Ben A.

Journal is first class these days, my father and i both look forward to each new edition. I think its fair to say that recently the quality all round has went up a notch.

Keep up the good work guys, it is both noted and appreciated.

Some will no doubt have noticed that the GCR is referred to in several places as 'Grand' instead of 'Great'. Obviously it is the Great Central Railway as correctly indicated in the badge on the bottom of the back cover and the address. To some extent it's lucky to get referred to as the GCR - I kept calling it the GRC which is also at Loughborough and where I'd been for work meetings more than a decade ago.

Anyway, here is an updated version FYI.

I'm appealing for articles that can be published in the 'N Gauge Journal*'. There are some wonderful N Gauge projects featured in threads here on RMweb and some fabulous layouts with what looks to be great pics.

Unfortunately we can't pay for submissions but you will get to see your project/layout in print and circulated to over 5000 members. If you are not a member it doesn't matter and I'll arrange to have a copy of the magazine sent to you. Please give it some consideration and if you have any questions send me a PM.

G.

* The Journal is a bi-monthy, full colour, A5 sized, around 80 pages, magazine sent to members of the N Gauge Society. It features exclusively N Gauge content such as reviews, news, 'how to' features, members models, layouts, modelling projects and so on. In addition there is a separate 'Newsletter' publication for Society matters like reports, notices, classified adverts, and details of Society events.

I've been making good progress with the next issue (4/16) - the articles are all in place and final details

for them are being worked on, plus I'm only waiting on the more time sensitive contributions like the trade

report and reviews. The copy deadline is the 28th of this month and at the start of the following month I

need to get it completed and generate the print ready file to send to the printers. The posting out of

printed copies is scheduled for the last full week of July.

However, as mentioned in my previous posting, I'm in need of contributions for future issues. Full details

of how to submit something as well as ideas and suggestions will be in the 4/16 Newsletter - please

read it through and give some consideration as to how you can help.

Thanks in anticipation.

I can confirm that issue 4/16 has been printed, mailed and is currently dropping through (at least UK) letterboxes. No doubt overseas will take a little longer subject to international shipping and local postal services. I hope those receiving it enjoy it.

Thoughts have now turned to issue 5/16. And the main article content is well progressed. However, it's a matter of scouring for N Gauge news and more date sensitive information. So if you know of any then please let me know.

Hi,

Not all cars come from Oxford - Matthew Longstaff displays his collection

It was interesting to read the account by Matthew of his suggestion to Rapidpro, it reflects closely my own experience of how positively and speedily Jens responded to my own – making available my requests from his then existing 1/160 range in 1/148, including the Focus, within 48 hours – see:

Progress is well advanced on issue 5/16. All the articles and features are in place and the news and reviews are starting to filter in. So, with the copy deadline on the 28th, this is the last call for any news items for consideration of inclusion.

With little feedback from the last couple of issues I have to presume members are happy with the content and style.

Hello Grahame,

"I have to presume members are happy with the content and style."

Defintely, I think you've done a really great job Grahame. Thank you.

Just a detail thing - but I'd like to see a track plan with every featured layout if possible.

For instance: In the most recent edition of the NGJ I was intrigued by the Castlefields layout ( PP 18 – 21) and how such an apparently busy and expansive scene could be incorporated into such a small space. I'd love to have known how that was achieved: But it was difficult to work out from the photos. A track plan would have helped.

Not a criticism, just a comment :)

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for your feedback.

I appreciate that would be nice to have a plan with every layout featured and would like to be able to do so. One wasn't deliberately left out with Castleford. It just wasn't provided.

Unfortunately we can't really insist that people draw a suitable plan and sent it in with their article although it is requested. Strangely, some people are very reluctant to do that. And, of course, we can only publish what is submitted.

However, guidelines about what and how to submit articles are published in every accompanying Newsletter but you'd be surprised how many people don't read them or think it doesn't apply to them.

The last Journal was, once again, very good. My own contribution is still limping towards a conclusion (it's a modelling article but the project got held up because I made a pig's ear of the painting) but should be finished soon.

Regarding the last issue, though: has anyone actually finished the competition? It normally takes me a leisurely hour or two, but I must have spent two or three times that on this one and I still haven't worked out where "pop" belongs!

I'm NOT suggesting that anyone posts a hint or anything like that (I certainly wouldn't do that myself); I'm just wondering if anybody has been able to do it.

It is a particularly evil competition this time and I only persevered with it for so long because I really badly want a late crest 4MT.  Pop is indeed very tricky and for me was the key - when I finally got it there was a eureka moment and the other outstanding groups fell into place immediately.

Sorry that's not much help - for what it's worth, there are at least 1 or 2 journal competitions (if not more) a year that I never work out.  And I never win even when I do :scratchhead:

Good luck!

Mark

PS - Grahame, the journal really is excellent these days.  Always greatly anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed.  Agree with Southerboy's comments about track plans, although appreciate your comments about contributors not consistently contributing everything you ask for.  On a very similar note, I always like to see a picture of the whole layout.  Obviously this isn't always possible or practical in an A5 format, especially with large layouts, but one or two of the commercial magazines (Model Rail and maybe BRM?) nowadays regularly include this. I know you may well ask for it already.

In the last 2 or 3 years I've enjoyed many of the articles on real life railway / prototypical operations - Bulleid coach set formations and numbers, milk train operations (by Matt Pinto I think?) and military trains.  I'd be happy to see more of these kinds of articles.  Similar article on Parcels trains? (or has that been done?).  Have also been enjoying your London Street footbridge series and am looking forward to the next instalment.  It's encouraged me to develop my sadly woeful scratch building skills and work on a much needed footbridge of my own, albeit on a vastly more modest scale.

All the best.

Newspaper and parcels trains was done in Journal 2/15.

But yep, if you've some specialist knowledge or are prepared to undertake some research then I'd be happy to receive and publish another prototype operation type article.

The Journal is a contribution content magazine so submissions are essential.

Hi Grahame,

I'm afraid my current level of knowledge on just about any railway related topic is nowhere near suficient to write an article that could stand up to any degree of scrutiny.   Furthermore, I have to juggle work and time-consuming care commitments (not always harmoniously) and regrettably simply don't have the time to invest in the degree of research that would be necessary.  One day though ....

The copy deadline has now passed for issue 5/16. Currently it is being

proofread and finalised, before generating the print file and being sent

off for printing, packing and posting. It should be out and with members

in about four weeks (before the end of September).

114949.jpg

Content for future issue is most welcome and submissions are encouraged.

As next year is the 50th anniversary of the N Gauge Society, appropriate

articles would be a nice touch. I look forward to receiving exciting new

quality contributions.

The September/October issue is now starting to drop through British letterboxes from today. No doubt overseas addresses will take a little longer. The package should contain three publications:

  • Journal 5/16 (full colour; 92pp)
  • Newsletter 5/16 (B&W; 20pp)
  • Jargon Buster Booklet (colour; 12pp)

I hope members enjoy them.

Rumour has it that some members simply throw their copy of the Newsletter away without reading it. However, it contains important NGS information and details about Society projects and developments, so please check through before disposing of it and then chasing up committee members for details that are included in it. Thanks in anticipation.
