A few more from Weymouth over the years.

Just before full electrification kicked in during 1987. Unidentified 33 and 3TC set. (I need to dig out the original print set to find the loco and unit number)

Correct. 33036 and 33043 were the locos involved. 33036 was withdrawn whereas 33043 was repaired.

My apologies for returning so late to this thread.  I will bow to your knowledge; "33 036" was me guessing the number from peering at the print with a failing 'Mk. I eyeball' before up-loading.  I might have a note of the observation, but will amend the scan accordingly.  Many thanks to you all for the correction and information.

Sadly the loco and unit number were unidentifiable with certainty as the other's in the set with identifiable numbers were not in the same position on the track so may/may not be the same train's arrival and departure.  The strong possibility is that it was the same train, therefore 8102 for the unit and 33 106 for the loco, but this is not a 100% certainty.

Oh, for a time machine!

I used to go to the school right by the junction in the final couple of years of the Lavant branch line's life. Pretty much exclusively class 73 in its latter days, so it is nice to see some 33 action; which was rare (I think I saw a 33 just once on the branch in 3 years).

The pipe attachment seen was unique to 33102 and enabled it to work in conjunction with "The Swedish Scrubber" QXA ADB 977695, a rail head treatment vehicle converted from a GUV papers van of sorts IIRC...apparently if worked very well at removing leaf mulch in trials but was not followed up on cost grounds, 33102 had some extra buttons in the cabs to actuate the scrubbing gear too.

Bert it was very useful, just working your information into my Class 33 book. Do you know when this equipment was fitted to 33102?

Best wishes

Nothing specific or documented unfortunately, just info I have picked up over the years and I'm sure there are far more knowledgable people on here who may hopefully be tuning in.

* The basics as I understand it though are that 33102 and the scrubber van worked with the RTC Tribology test train and 2 vehicles from ex-4TC 8012 (DTS & TBSK)

* The whole formation could be driven and the scrubber van controlled from either the loco or DTS cab,

* Sitings of the train were first noted in October 1991 around Eastleigh at the onset of the leaf fall season, and 33102 was withdrawn in November 1992 so the whole thing never lasted long, though was considered very effective.

* 33102 was noted to have acquired the unofficial name of Sophie at some point during these trials, applied by someone at Eastleigh depot in connection with the Swedish Scrubber nickname...wouldn't be allowed now!

Looking forward to the book Simon, my Dad was an Eastleigh/Basingstoke driver and was on them from virtually new until withdrawal including some of the testing during the 33/1 conversions...sadly he isn't around now to ask any questions though.

OK, it’s in captivity, and I couldn’t see the number, but here’s one this morning at Princes Risborough, ‘top and tail’ with. GWR small prairie on a Santa train.

To prove that train spotting isn’t all dull these days, in fifteen minutes, I saw this, a main line train made-up of DMMUs, a loco-hauled main line train, a two-car DMMU coming off the Aylesbury branch, and a southbound empty rubbish train, coming down from Calvert.

CHuff-chuff?

I honestly have no idea.

What I do know is that the wave of nostalgia hit me when I caught sound of the Crompton ticking over, not when I saw or heard the 2-6-2T, which I guess is an age-defining thing. I do remember steam locos ‘in the wild’, but I worked around Cromptons.

Bert,

Many thanks for this, with other info I have acquired I have a much better understanding.

Best wishes

To think that 40 years ago a 33 there was commonplace, albeit with oil tanks and on the now closed Thame branch...

Oh and the box controlled semaphores of course.

A couple of shots of 33s well away from their traditional stomping grounds

33025 at Motherwell depot, I don't have a date for this unfortunately but it must have been around 1999/2000 as 33025 was one of three class 33 locomotives sent to Scotland on 1st October 1999.
33025 (grey/yellow) and 33030 (EWS livery) were allocated to Motherwell, and outbased at Aberdeen for local freight duties.
33019 (grey/yellow) was kept at Motherwell Depot as a source for spares.

The Skirl of the Bagpipes returning south through Stirling on April 1st 1995 with 33109+33116 at the head.

Back on page 3 of this thread there is a shot of 33109 and 33116 approaching Wigan NW heading north also in April 1995 with a 4TC in tow which I was surprised didn't warrent any discussion, this was the locos and stock heading for the G&SW line for filming of the first "Mission Impossible" film, which by the magic of CGI turned into the most implausable helicopter/train chase sequence in the Channel Tunnel
