BR(S)
Although a forerunner of those damn 66s, I always put 59s on my wishlist, especially in silver Yeoman livery. I could justify one on Bromley North in ex-works condition under test. It's changed just a little! The greenery has made things a bit tighter, with only really a head on shot available 59204 passes Little Bedwyn working 7C31 Theale - Merehead 25/5/12 59001 passes Little Bedwyn working 7C77 Acton - Merehead. Glorious NSE
They get about a bit as well, and not just on the traditional stone traffic - 59201 at Newton Abbot on engineers duty, Nov 2007 - it wasn't unusual for EWS to be using Mendip Rail loco's for weekend engineers traffic at this time either!

Andy Siddall
Excellent thread with some great photography! I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the 59s, more so now as the baby brother to the always seen 66s. These shots have been posted before about 3 years ago but are warranted as a contribution to this thread (I think), I was lucky enough to be at Derby on the 25th of October 1990 when 47033 dragged 59101, 102 and 103 (in that order) to the Railway Technical Centre for acceptance tests. 591035910259101CheersAndy

Steadfast
I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the 59s, more so now as the baby brother to the always seen 66s. Cheers Andy Baby brother? More like big brother! Both in age and competency! Cracking shots of the /1s Andy. With the sound of the rain splashing off my windows here's a few "appropriate" pictures of the class 59s... 59002 approaches Westbury working a late running 7C31 Theale - Merehead 21/6/12 59104 passes Crofton with 6L21 Whatley - Dagenham, with steam coming off the exhaust and radiators as it battles the hailstones 18/4/12 59201 at Fairwood with 6Z50 Eastleigh - Merehead. The wagons had been brought to Westbury by a pair of 66s, and once loaded will be bound for the Swanage Railway 20/1/10 59201 plods along the straight track at Edington at 45mph working 7C77 Acton - Merehead. This is my first sight of it since its DB red repaint 11/6/12 59204 takes the line to Westbury at Fairwood Junction with 7A09 Merehead - Acton 5/8/09 59205 approaches Twerton tunnel, Bath, with 6A83 Avonmouth - West Drayton 25/2/11 jo
Classsix T
The last shot in particular is excellent jo, and proof that some photographers insistence on only taking pics in ideal lighting conditions is a misnomer. C6T.

SRman
Not the highest of quality but here is a segment of video I took on February 19th, 1999 from a class 166 unit bound for Banbury (I was getting off at Reading). The footage is a little murky because of the dirty windows.
Steadfast
That's a cracking video, despite lower quality it's fantastic to see the two versions of the ARC livery and Hanson all in the same train. Usually pictures of that era show odd ones with the majority in one livery, an interesting time. Off now to search online photo galleries of that era... :-D jo
SWT442
Some excellent pictures in this thread, I really do keep meaning to head over to the B&H to catch the Super Sheds on their stomping grounds! So, a few from me from around the Hampshire area. Taken a few weeks ago, debranded 59002 "Alan J Day" passes Lee, between Redbridge & Romsey working the occasional 7V07 Chichester RFT to Merehead Quarry. (28.01.14) Seen leaving Eastleigh Yard after a run round due to the Chandlers Ford line being shut, 59004 "Paul A Hammond" works 7O35 Westbury to Fareham ARC loaded stone. (05.02.13) Posted as the final working (but turned out to be 3rd last!), 59101 "Village of Whatley" drifts down grade from Beaulieu Road with the 7V52 Hamworthy Quay to Whatley Quarry empties. (03.06.12) After undergoing winter maintenance at Knights Rail, 59101 "Village of Whatley" leads 59002 "Alan J Day" & 59102 "Village of Chantry" through Crampmoor, between Eastleigh & Romsey, with 0F59 Eastleigh Alstom to Westbury Down TC. (02.01.13) Rounding the curve at Mottisfont & Dunbridge, 59203 takes charge of 7V16 Fareham ARC to Whatley Quarry empties. (25.03.13) In good Sun, 59206 "John F Yeoman - Rail Pioneer" works through Crampmoor with 7V16 Fareham ARC to Merehead Quarry empty stone. (23.04.13) Will upload a few more later! Keep those pics coming. Andy.
Glorious NSE
Continuing Jo's weather theme - the US lights on 59001 stand out as it looms out of the fog, Westbury, Aug 2005 On a very damp early morning, 59005 drags it's load up over the WCML and through the S curves at Willesden Jcn, May 2009 (made a crackin' noise, IIRC...) On a very wet and grey Oct 2006 day, 59202 waits in the centre roads at Newport for a space in ADJ yard with the engineers trip from Westbury, whilst 60065 heads East with a steel train - 202's load this day was an extremely taxing one - three empty Salmon! Not just a loco for unit aggregate trains!
scouser
Really like this topic the 59s being one of my favourite locos. Great pics thanks to all!
Andy Siddall
59203 passes through Hayes and Harlington with 702M the 0712 Merehead Quarry to Acton on Friday 21/02/14. Cheers Andy
Steadfast
So that's where 203 was yesterday! The other five were all accounted for, we saw 202,204,205,206 around Westbury area and 201 worked the Appleford stone. The headcode's 7A09 on that one by the way, RTT just gives an anonymous code for freights, though the first number does tend to be the class of the working, in this case a class 7. A nice picture, I just noticed it has Hanson hoppers in tow too, not normally seen on Merehead workings jo
Andy Siddall
Thanks Jo, This is the first time I had used RTT to get train info although I did think that the headcode was a little strange. Is there a better way of finding out this info other than being on the inside! Cheers Andy
Steadfast
Hi Andy, RTT is brilliant isn't it. What ever did we do before it! To be honest for me it's a mix of Yahoo gen groups, previous knowledge, this place and the Network Rail working time tables available on their website jo
Steadfast
Seeing Andy's photos of the Southern region workings reminded me of this one I took. I don't have many shots of 59s working to and from the Southern, but this one is a favourite. 59002 ambles through the Wylye Valley near Hanging Langford with 7V52 Hamworthy - Whatley 19/8/11 I've just finished a mass upload to Smugmug so here's a few recent ones to add to the mix. 59004 in debranded Yeoman livery passes Langley Burrell working 7Z12 Merehead - Wootton Bassett 22/11/13 59203 passes Baulking working 7C54 Oxford Banbury Road - Whatley 17/12/13 59201 passes Wootton Bassett with 6C54 Oxford Banbury Road - Westbury 19/2/14 59004 passes Berkley Marsh working 7C77 Acton - Merehead 21/2/14 59205 passes Berkley Marsh working 6V18 Hither Green - Whatley 21/2/14 59202 passes Berkley Marsh under a rainbow working light engine from Whatley to Merehead via Westbury, presumably using the usual 0F59 headcode 21/2/14 jo

Andy Siddall
Taken today at Shottesbrook Farm, I believe this was the 12:40 Acton to Merehead working (according to Real Time Trains).
