The class 59s

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

A couple from last week. The Class 59's now not as common around the Solent area since Freightliner took over the Mendip workings.

A shot only really do-able at this time of day when the Sun isn't out. 59204 rolls through Crampmoor, on the Chandlers Ford line, with 6V62 Southampton Up Yard to Whatley Quarry stone empties - 22.09.2020

In no hurry, 59102 "Village of Chantry" ambles through Dunbridge with 7O40 Merehead Quarry to Eastleigh Aggregates Sidings - 25.09.2020

A few from me. All on Flickr, so click them if you want to see them big!

Three locos, one wagon!

59003 'Yeoman Highlander' waits time in Westbury Down Yard with 6O41 to Eastleigh. 66729 and 66754 were dead in tow after working a ballast train over the weekend and the heavyweight load comprised a sole OCA Bass wagon!

19/10/20

59204 7V33 Westbury

59204 waits in the Down Yard at Westbury to finish running round a late running 7V33 Eastleigh - Merehead. This is the return empties from the afternoon 7O40 that is often photographed. The wait was whilst another Mendip service was stabled in the yard. Always busy at Westbury!

23/11/20

Reflecting on Mendip Rail

One I found on my phone from 2019 whilst looking for something else. Back when DB was still running the Mendip Rail contract, 59203 and one of the Hanson class 59/1s are sat together at the head of what is either 6A20 or 6A71 for Acton in Westbury Up Yard. I can't remember if it was traffic from Machen, or whether something had failed earlier in the day and then gone forward as a later service. This is in the Virtual Quarry (VQ), a ballast stock pile for loading trains for engineering sites, but used on this occasion due to being a long road to form a Mendip service up on.

4/4/19

59104 6C49 Westbury

59104 sits on the Down Reception at Westbury with 6C49 from Appleford, waiting for a relief driver and its place in the queue of trains heading to Whatley

10/3/21

59004 7C77 Fairwood

With the Westbury white horse on the hill behind, 59004 'Paul A Hammond' gets away after a driver swap on a nearly two hours late 7C77 Acton - Merehead. Crazy to think these initial four locos are now 35 years old!

1/6/21

59204 + 66616 6C76 Fairwood

Still in unbranded DB red, Freightliner's 59204 leads 66616 past Fairwood working 6C76 Acton - Whatley. The train was crawling, after being held at the signal by the 8th wagon back to allow 7C77 out in front.

I've just put a trio of older pictures up on Flickr, from September 2008.

59004 6L21 Westbury

59004 'Paul A Hammond' in its Yeoman silver and blue gets what I believe to be 6L21 Whatley - Dagenham going again after a driver swap on the Up Reception. It's noticeable how quiet Westbury looks, with no MHD recycling track panels, no Colas fuel point and a holding siding that is devoid of units too.

59004 6L21 Westbury

A second shot of 59004 getting what I believe to be 6L21 Whatley - Dagenham going again after a driver swap on the Up Reception at Westbury. I did like this revised version of the Yeoman livery. This also shows the different profiles of the main batch of Hanson / ARC JHAs built by Powell Duffryn / Standard and the Procor built extra inners.

Contrasting colours

For a while South West Trains operated class 121 'bubble car' 960012 (977860) as a route learning unit. It has just come up from the Fairwood direction and once at a stand on the Up Reception behind W602 would depart for Salisbury. 59001 'Yeoman Endeavour' sits on the Back Road, its Aggregate Industries livery still quite fresh at the time. I never managed a shot of it when it was freshly repainted, with the lower green the wrong shade.

Not bad considering the SD40-2 dates back older than the 56’s the 59’s replace.

But imagine if the stars aligned differently…

HS4000 Kestrel might have been a good choice for this fleet.

There’s a path in the schedule on 16th July for 59003 to return to its more usual haunts as 0Z67, 10.38 Plymouth to Eastleigh East Yard (15.11).

For those who have not been to Leeds Midland Road 59005 is still sat in the siding it has been there for months.  It has accommodation bogies in place of the usual ones and a "Not to be moved" board on it.  I bet that it won't be going south for a while!

It's the first in the fleet to have its bogies overhauled. The others should visit in due course from what I've been told by a Freightliner driver.

005 is still sat at Midland Road on those bogies today.  Well that's about 8 months in the same siding.  There are a few 66's at the ends of others there that have not moved for many weeks.  A few Christmas trees?

Is there spare class 59 bogies ?

if not, and this is first for a bogie overhaul, then the learning curve, plans may be taking a while, of course if spares are needed but not yet in stock, that too could delay it.

With the length of time that 59's have been arounc, the knowledge should be available. They arevof gourse not the same as 66's.

Another couple from a few years ago, linked from Flickr so clicking them will make them viewable big size.

59002 7A09 West Drayton

2013: Matching Yeomans, as 59002 'Alan J Day' leads 7A09 Merehead - Acton past West Drayton with a set of Yeoman O&K hoppers in the front portion.

59205 6C41 Brassknocker

2011: 59205 'L. Keith McNair' drifts past Brassknocker with a lightweight 6C41 Newport ADJ - Westbury - formed of just two IOA Mussel wagons.

I posted this on the Revolution 59 thread yesterday, thought to may be of interest here as well.

The Berks and Hants route is the bread and butter for the class 59s. I found some 59 pictures from 2012 whilst I was looking for something else, so stuck them on Flickr yesterday, so click them to see them bigger if you want. I know this area like the back of my hand and think it'd make an absolutely brilliant layout concept for 59s and long trains interspersed by HSTs.

Let's fire up the time machine!

59004 7A09 Crofton

59004 'Paul A Hammond' leads 7A09 past Crofton, a nice matching set of Yeoman hoppers behind one of the Yeoman 59s.

59204 7C31 Little Bedwyn

Still carrying EWS colours, 59204 'Vale of Glamorgan' leads 7C31 Theale - Merehead past Little Bedwyn

59002 + 59001 7C77 Wolfhall

59002 'Alan J Day' still carrying the revised Foster Yeoman colours is paired with Aggregate Industries coloured 59001 'Yeoman Endeavour' at the head of 7C77 Acton - Merehead, seen at Wolfhall.

59101 6V18 Wolfhall

59101 'Village of Whatley' rounds the curve at Wolfhall working 6V18 Hither Green - Whatley.

59202 6A83 Wolfhall

59202 'Vale of White Horse' has just crested the summit at Savernake as it heads 6A83 Avonmouth - West Drayton past Wolfhall. It wasn't long after the the loco would lose its EWS colours for a fresh coat of DB Schenker red.

Two years later, on to 2014.

59203 6M20 Wootton Rivers

DB Schenker red 59203 passes Wootton Rivers with a mix of HOAs, IIAs and RMC JGAs in tow on 6M20 Whatley - St Pancras.

Finally, this shows the differences on the roof between 59005 and the other 59/0s, as featured on the Revolution model. There's also some smaller differences that have also been included on the model.

59005 + 59001 7A17 Wootton Rivers

59005 'Kenneth J Painter' leads 59001 'Yeoman Endeavour' past Wootton Rivers with 7A17 Merehead - Acton. For a short period, this train regularly had the Bardon JGAs in the consist, along with the regular Yeoman / Mendip types.
