The class 59s

EWS looked good on these, better than the 66s without the thunder flash bit....I wonder why they didn’t do these the same

The zig zag was for their new build locos, and the straight band for inherited types.

The straight gold does look better on the 'square' design though.

A few from yesterday as 59003 was put through its paces on the GBRf 'This Time it's Personal' tour.

First up, a couple of it passing Charlton Down, a few miles south of Petersfield. It is a very pleasant location, and a reasonable well known view point, mainly from the opposite side of the valley (better photos in the afternoon, given the sun's position) with the small church as a background. Incidentally, the church is famed for its murals - one a little more recent than the others (unless medieval artists has SWT liveried class 442s as inspiration!).

A pair of 73s were trailing at this point. The tour then continued to Marchwood, before heading up to Eastleigh. At this point the 59 was trailing.

At Eastleigh the 59 was detached and the 73s continued alone back up to Town for the next leg of the journey.

Nice shot. I like how the longshot exaggerates the track undualations in the foreground. Try recreating that effect in model form and keep your stock on the rails.....

And the ensuing "I think you'll find" comments about track being straight and level in the real world! No. 1 is particularly bumpy, as the photo shows.

After its lengthy stay at Freightliner’s Leeds Midland Road depot, it's been there since November 2020 for an overhaul on its bogies, 59005 'Kenneth J Painter' headed west through Deighton towards Huddersfield on 17th May 2022, working light locomotive as 0M59, Leeds Balm Road to Crewe Basford Hall.

There's a subsequent path in the schedule on 17th May for its onward move from Crewe to Merehead Quarry.

Update - looks like it might be headed to Stoke Gifford from Crewe.

I was in the right place at the right time yesterday.

A rare breed

The final pair of Freightliner class 59/2s to still carry DB red sit at Acton while crew changes take place. 59205 is closest, working 6C76 Wembley - Whatley whilst 59201 has just arrived from Whatley with 6M20 to St Pancras. The rust patches on 205 have recently been painted over in red and grey, so perhaps there's a while yet before it goes orange?

I’m massively offended!

You were in my neighbourhood and we didn’t catch up for a pint… lol!

Guessing you were working though?

Nice pic.

Forgive my ignorance but where is the stone terminal at St Pancras.  Nice to see the 59/2's. I saw them at Ferrybridge when they first arrived.

Don't think a pint would've gone down well on company time 😉 been on the Westbury - Acton / Cricklewood most days this week.

No idea, but it's full name is St Pancras Churchyard Sidings. Don't know now if any mergers have changed it, but it was a Tarmac owned site a couple of years ago.

Thanks very much to both of you.  That makes sense. I think that the churchyard was cleared when the line was built.  IIRC there was a big fuss about the insensitive way the exhumed bodies were handled. That would make sende with the name.

Waiting at Strood for a late running Javelin*, the Allington-Whatley Quarry empties with red 59201 crept up on me unexpectedly:

866020064_Strood29nov22b.jpg.034a8a2a1721b4008f661f744070a803.jpg

* off topic: the Javelin was so late they decided to miss out Gravesend, Ebbsfleet and Stratford, resulting in a 26-minute start-to-stop from Strood-St Pancras versus the timetabled 34 minutes. Average speed of 74mph for the journey was higher than the max 70 mph line speed on the classic section, let alone the 15mph curve into Strood tunnel and the 30(?) through Gravesend. Voltage change was done on the move at Ebbsfleet.
