Come on Jack pics! :o

I’ll make sure I take pics next time I use them just to satisfy your slight glove obsession.....

Yesterday I sprayed the black roof on 303 and the red bufferbeam on 308. The masking tape on 308 ripped even more of the numbers off! Took some pics outside today to get better quality:

A very nice shiny finish has been left so transfers will be a doddle *touches wood*.

After a decidedly average day at work, a puncture on my bike on the way home, missing seeing a train and lack of sleep...when I went to cut out the etched light clusters I’d stuck to some plasticard, most of them pinged off as the glue bond was rubbish. I’m not doing any more tonight and going to bed... :no2:

Normal service shall resume shortly.

Jack.

Morning....

Not much has happened lately due to a university summer assignment (I know right?!) and trips up and down the country most weekends to Carlisle and Norwich amongst other places! On Friday I’m off to Switzerland for a week and a bit so there won’t be any modelling for a while, however after that I shall crack on.

On the class 20 front, I have always had a deadline of the end of September for a couple of reasons...so I need to stick to it! Slight progress has been made with painting; the buffers, coupling pockets and cant rail stripe have been painted with Humbrol enamels, and so have the light clusters. Not sure whether I’ve detailed how I did these before but they’re Brian's (Shawplan) etched WIPACs with a plastic back, all filed up and then primed and painted along with the cab windscreen surrounds. I glued them on last night with superglue and cut a couple of pieces of 1.5mm and 2mm fibre optic to see what they looked like. I also lit them up temporarily, but some light bleed needs sorting before I add lenses permanently.

After these photos I offered up the nameplate I acquired from Shawplan and many expletives followed as it didn’t fit in the gap between the MW 'nose' and strip on the cab front. The socket has been detached and the space will be patch painted before a smaller one is added, ensuring the space is big enough...

On the kettle front, the running gear has been painted Humbrol silver and tyres painted black, which looks a lot better IMHO. Details have been painted in various colours too. She’s starting to look the part!

Keep modelling!

And now the assignment deadline is well and truly gone, lots of work has been done.

Starting with the 20, the light lenses have been added permanently to the cab end, using 1.5mm and 2mm fibre optic cable. The red lenses were painted red inside to look like the real thing. Nameplate, windows and window frames have also been added with 3mm double-sided tape and Glue N Glaze adhesive respectively. Here's a taster of the lights just after I’d put the lenses in:

And transfers have now been fully applied. These are from the excellent Railtec range, which included numbers for all the DRS class 20s, allowing the numbers on 20308 to be re-applied too as these had flaked off:

(Not a clue why some images are tiny...apologies!)

Next up is the Duchess, which has now had the lamp lenses added from 1.5mm fibre optic. I’ve also finished painting all the fine details and the wheels, which look a lot better IMHO for the effort of sanding the tyres and wheels flush then painting matt black.

I've also got some drivers to add...the LH for the kettle (obviously) and RH from Modelu for the chopper...including a scaled down version of Big Jim!

Last week at work I had a few free days, and was told to 'make myself busy'...I’d done all my paperwork and practical work so there was only one thing to do...mill some chassis! Two older class 37 chassis were done, to allow two Roads and Rails 'megabass' speakers to fit as per my 68.

And while I was at it, I decided to finish one of them properly. This will be the heavyweight beast 37716 in its current DRS 'Swoosh' livery. The loco was originally going to be 37038 but I fancy the heavyweight with its original ex-split headcode noses (albeit modified) instead of the numerous WIPAC clusters or centre head codes of the other DRS growlers. A Shawplan roof grille was added along with some filler to fill the last gaps left by plasticard strips used to fill the horn recesses. New scale bonnet doors were added from plasticard too as the older Bachmann ones are underscale.

Same at the other end but with a flattened boiler blanking plate:

It will receive Bachmann snowploughs (modified of course) and Shawplan cast white metal buffers, which I’ve filed to a more prototypical shape and sprayed red:

And the cheapskate I am, I couldn’t be bothered swapping noses for some ex-split headcode ones so I sanded down the centre headcode and filled the holes:

Then today I’ve added new marker lights from 2.5mm plastic tube, new horn grilles from PHD and a headlight from Replica. The lamp irons are the originals which I found in the spares tin. A coat of primer shows up a few marks which will be sorted in due course. I can’t decide whether to leave the lights at 1.5mm or drill out to 2mm...what do we think? Compare to my pic below from the Gresty Bridge open day:

37716, 37610 & 57305, Crewe Gresty Bridge

That’s it...promise. Very much enjoying modelling currently. So much so that I may set myself a tight schedule of 4 weeks for the next project in time for the Wigan show, which involves a VERY current repaint, and it’s not a loco. Those who I haven’t told may send their answer on a fiver to me. Or post a response below... :scratchhead:

Keep modelling! :senile:

Jack.

This morning I’ve managed to sand down the horn recess filler and tidy up the body and noses, then the whole body shell had a coat of primer. There are still a few small areas which need further sanding with very fine 1200 grit abrasive, but hopefully colours can go on next week if not tomorrow night as I’m away the rest of today and tomorrow. The new roof grille and scale bonnet doors bring the otherwise flawed original Bachmann loco to life IMO...

Next week at work I should be able to take a couple of projects in (class 20s mainly) and wire them up as I’m in electronics so have access to soldering equipment. I’ve again been told to busy myself with something, and my instructor said bring them in...win! :danced:

Buffered HST de-vinyled with EMR? Or full on crimson?

No to the HST...I’d class that as a loco but it’s not that in any case. I saw the thing in question twice on Etches Park over the last few days...it certainly stood out.

I’m on holiday, about as far away as you can get from Derby without crossing water. :sungum:

So I’m probably not as up-to-date as usual, but my guess is something with a number end with ‘104’ ?!

cheers,

Phil.

I know...I did have to email twice, about a month apart but after the second email he replied quite quickly. It’s hit and miss unfortunately but his products are well worth the wait/perseverance.

I just nag at him at exhibitions ! :P

Or worse still, set my Dad nagging at him !! :laugh_mini:

To be fair to Brian, he is a ‘one man band’, so there can’ t be enough hours in the day for him to keep everyone happy.

As the plates are the last thing I apply to any project, it doesn’t really cause an issue if they’re added later.

I have got a couple of locos in use that are awaiting their own miniature naming ceremony ! (HST power cars mainly)

And it feels like Christmas when you get a nameplate you’ve been waiting for....

cheers,

Phil.
