Jack374
Cheers Neil, much appreciated! Firstly, a shameless plug for Railtec Transfers and Shawplan. On Monday I saw Steve @ Railtec released a new transfer pack covering 90034 and most importantly, 60065. I was going to message last week but withheld until I'd finished some more projects, however with the pack now being available, it was a no-brainer! I email both Steve and Brian at Shawplan on Monday, and had email conversations leading to the transfers and 'Spirit of Jaguar' 'plates arriving within days. My beloved Hornby 60042 was denamed and numbered with thinners, then gloss varnish applied before transfers and another varnish coat this evening. A bit of weathering and the odd bit of painting will see the loco in current condition. Very impressed! I also swapped the factory-supplied speaker for a Roads & Rails square magabass, which sounds great! The volume had to be turned down from 64 (max) to 15 though as it was deafening! The speaker was simply soldered in and sits above the fan detail which had to be cut down slightly. It didn't quite fit the normal speaker end. I may add cab lights but for now it looks the part! And again, except weathering, I've FINISHED the DRS 20 (303)!! Drivers from Modelu (including Big Jim), Shawplan etched wipers and original handrails with pipes from the spares box (mostly Bachmann and Hornby). Mighty happy with this one. Finally for now, the last two projects currently on the go. 37716 has had the ends painted in a more orange Rover 'Inca Yellow' shade from Halfords (no piccies) and the body had BMW 'Electric Orange', Renault 'Royal Blue' and gloss black (all Halfords) sprayed in that order, with the orange being masked to represent the cant rail stripe... And then this.... The new East Midlands Railway livery (hopefully) of 222104. The cab ends need some substantial extra material added (more than above! ), then I've got to fight with roof differences, front cowl remodelling, paint and transfer non-existence! I reckon the layout that this will run on ('Deadman's Lane') will be retired before it's done. Happy modelling! The mojo is currently strong with this one Jack. 13 1
Steadfast
Morning Jack, Nice work on 60065, really nice start and one of my favourites. Hope you don't mind a few pics of the real thing from when we had it earlier in the year. These are from February - March time. The closer you look the more patch painting it has. There are a few around the bodyside grills and at least one grill is a replacement with fresh black paint. It's only got a DB sticker on one nose end, too. I do like the yellow above the cab side window, a reminder of the original livery showing through. Silver buffers one end, and don't forget the yellow ploughs one end the plough is much cleaner and more obviously yellow. Almost looks like it might have been wiped clean with a glove... Hope the pics are of use Jo 7 1

Darlington South Junction
That 222 "Meridien" sounds like an interesting project! What will you plan to do when it comes to the decals? Cheers

Cheers for the photos Jo, much appreciated! The photos I was using to do the transfers showed the same end so I’ve put stickers on both...schoolboy error. Easily rectified though. I saw the yellow patch, buffers and ploughs and they’ll be done next before patching up the weathering. Thanks for the comments Jules, G and Darlington South - the 222 is quite a hefty project and may take some time - they’ll probably be retired before I’m done! For transfers I was thinking of just doing the EMR branding and using paint to do the lighter purple shade and lining. I’ll think about it more when I get there. Jack374
I’ve signed off the 60 now (hopefully up to scratch Jo!) by removing one DB sticker with fine abrasive paper, adding the yellow patch and ploughs from Railmatch warning yellow, adding pipe detailing, grey buffers at one end and step tread from Humbrol white and silver (it needs tidying up) and a final weathering by hand. Some rubbish iPad photos after ones taken with a camera in the last post.... It now looks much more like the real thing! Thanks to Steve at Railtec for posting photos on social media And this week I proved pride comes before a fall. After getting the 60 and 20 finished, I thought I’d attempt the Rainbow Railways full body side transfers on 37716. This did not end well. It became clear quickly after moving the transfer out of its bath and into position that there was a huge amount of water which I just couldn’t draw out - even with tactical cuts with a fresh knife blade. The transfer was too long too, so I messed around with it trying to position it. By this time, it had dried a lot but wouldn’t settle into the grilles even with Microsol, leaving the mess shown below. I’ll mix some paint and patch it up, and I think it’s still salvageable. From a distance it looks ok though. PH Designs brass snowploughs and Shawplan cl60 buffers have been added to the chassis, and the plastic parts have been assembled to give me hope...... I've got a plan for side 2 but need to mentally prepare for applying it first. Still, nothing ventured nothing gained and I’ve learnt a lot from it. Keep modelling! RMweb Premium newbryford Posted September 12, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 12, 2019 (edited) The full decal is tricky to handle. Sometimes easier to let it dry and then work the decal into the grilles with Microsol later. (Have you thought about couplings for the 60?) Jack374
Ta for that Mick...I’ll cut the next one in half and take a slice out I think to correct the length and make it easier to deal with. 27 minutes ago, newbryford said: (Have you thought about couplings for the 60?) I was going to stick with the bar for a tension lock but I suppose if it’s going to pull anything then it needs a Kadee. The only thing it's worked recently IRL are engineer's trains so it could work that or wangle it’s way on to oil or stone, it’s up to you! Let me know if it really needs a Kadee and I’ll try and bodge one on. Jack.

Haha I did notice I’d missed these but I’ll do them when I next get the white paint out...it’ll do for now! I got a set of transfers for a 57 too, which may (with a strong tail wind) be started or *hopefully* finished for Wigan/Hazel Grove. As you say, flat sides so I’ve got no concerns with this. Thanks, Jack.

Jack374
So after a manic couple of weeks trying to finish projects, including taking last Friday off to get everything done and dusted, I've finished the 20, 37, 60 and a few other projects. Firstly some shots on 'Deadman's Lane' which I was running with Mick and team at Wigan: The class 20 received a fairly heavy weathering representing its colour during the start of the RHTT season. This was done with Railmatch Frame Dirt with the airbrush: And now to the problem child - 37716. After patching up the paint using Freightliner green, DRS blue and white to mix the right colour, the body was weathered in the same way as the 20. After this, Shawplan Laserglaze was added along with the original cab and side windows. Internally, a piece of Veroboard was used and the new circuit board and was wired up with a LokSound V4 (from 37409) which had an IC socket wired directly to the solder pads. 2 Roads & Rails 'Megabass' speakers were used, which sound very meaty indeed. Eventually this loco may receive a better decoder to allow full lighting operation, maybe. The lights were soldered using Veroboard and 0603 SMDs with 10k resistors. The two blue wires go to a switch in the fuel tank, turning off the lights at the no.2 end, although I got the ends mixed up and they turned off the lights at the no.1 end instead...doh!! I think an SMD has gone too as one red light is out so the loco will receive attention before the next exhibition. And the 60 had the lights brightened up by removing a couple of layers of masking tape from in front of the lenses. This means the lights are now very visible but still don't have a blue tinge as they do straight out of the box. There was an issue on Saturday morning as I'd put a 4 Ohm speaker in this but I'd left the old one in as I'd heard of issues with doing this. Sure enough, it sounded horrendous and could have caused serious damage so the original speaker was reused. A few more projects were progressed to a runnable (exhibitable) state too, including 37259, which was weathered on the roof and ends due to delicate transfers on the sides! The Stobart containers and IDA wagons were weathered too to represent the test train that's been running between Derby RTC (circular) and Carlisle Kingmoor to try and remedy the suspension issues on the wagons. Similarly, the Megafret wagon pair I modified with fixed wheel splashers has been weathered and had the number panels (to be) cleaned to reveal the blue underneath. It was a lot of work to modify the wagon but worth it IMO. And to form a runnable train (as seen on the Cumbrian Coast), my pair of DRS BSOs were updated with black roofs as per the real things. Halfords gloss black was used, simply by removing the roof sections and spraying separately then masking the ends and spraying these too. These were weathered with an aribrush then the roof weathering was washed down as happens in real life: Finally, the last loco I had ready was 37405 with updated noses, using plastic tube and small pieces of styrene to create new LED tail lights and bulk up the headcode panels respectively. PH Designs centre headcode etches were used as well as Replica high intensity headlights. Unfortunately the coupling bar wasn't strong enough so it didn't run, but I'll sort this and take some pics of the finished loco in due course. I've just ordered some magnets to make the orange MW cable sockets on all the DRS locos that need them. A new project, hopefully ready for Hazel Grove, has been started. The printing has been removed and it's ready for paint now. Any guesses? Mick, Cal and anyone else I've told can't partake Keep modelling! I imagine, knowing the speed of decisions by its owner, it'll be there for much longer! I reckon that's a 57 body so I'm going to guess it's another Derby project, 57002?

True about 310...DRS have just hired some DB 66s so clearly more economical to hire than repair their own locos. You’re getting slightly colder now lol...not necessarily a Derby-based item. At this point it’s just guessing the right number. Could be anything TBF...all will be revealed shortly. Jack.
