Jaz,

I did do it with a cotton bud, but after I'd cleaned it the old numbers still showed through so I rubbed it down with very fine wet and dry...

Do Phoenix still trade in the UK does anyone know? Looking at acquiring some superstrip...

Jack.

Hi Jack,

Phoenix do still trade, their website details the problems they have with paint/solvents /chemicals with the Royal Mail.

For DRS blue, use Humbrol 104 Oxford Blue - much easier to obtain from a local model shop. My first choice is my local toy/hobby/stationary shop in Clitheroe that stocks Humrol and Revell, after that my favoured choice is Transport Models in Preston. Another Preston shop, useful for paint and stuff is Hobbycraft at Deepdale.

Cheers,

Mick

Hello...

Not much has been done because of many other commitments (Grade 6 drums/Duke of Edinburgh's award/EXAMS!!!).

I have managed to rub down the rest of the decals on the DRS 37, so I can prime the body once all work has been done (new windscreen etches/grille/nose ends)

post-21664-0-97762300-1394833469_thumb.jpg

Also the wheels with their white tyres:

post-21664-0-99391400-1394833484_thumb.jpg

Now for something completely different...

A steam train! :O

I know others have already had a go but it's my turn to make the most of the 'Great British Locomotives' Mallard representation.

I started by fully dismantling it (Much to Dad's dislike!), then assessing what could be done before I decided to take the bulky handrails off, remove the glazing and the lamp brackets too...

post-21664-0-21531100-1394833374_thumb.jpg

This will hopefully become 60019 'Bittern', and I will employ a Brassmasters 'Easichas' chassis without a motor to allow for it to be towed around inside a diesel.

This should prove interesing as I've never worked with brass before...

The body compares almost exactly to the Hornby offering, so the nose is almost the same, unlike the Bachy model...

post-21664-0-13434700-1394833451_thumb.jpg

The driving wheels are a 1 piece white metal moulding, so I could use them on a depot or as scrap:

post-21664-0-31731700-1394833391_thumb.jpg

The tender wheels are without axles, so I could glue them together to be posed as replecements at a depot or similar;

post-21664-0-89666900-1394833414_thumb.jpg

This project may get restarted sometime, but for now that's it!

Thanks,

Jack. :senile:

Evening,

Not had time to update recently, but things have been fairly busy on the bench, including some Weathering / Kitbuilding .

I have decided to fill and modify the ViTrains noses instead of buying the PHDesigns resin ones, as I'm on pocket money and am currently skint! :nono:

This is what I'm aiming for, a plated over centre headcode and new WIPAC 'oOo' clusters...

post-21664-0-53228800-1395781345_thumb.jpg

Being prepped for filler:

post-21664-0-79661600-1395781414_thumb.jpg

Filling In process....

post-21664-0-44334800-1395781428_thumb.jpg

And after 2 fills and primer coats, the result thus far...

post-21664-0-31579800-1395781444_thumb.jpg

Maybe 1 more fill, but i'm nearly there!

Now.....I had 3 Hornby EWS mineral wagons, and weathered / modified them and they looked OK, but were far too high compared to Bachy's/Hornby's 'Super Detailed' offerings.

So as an experiment I have decided to chop one down, add a new floor and see if the time taken is worth it for the finished effect...

post-21664-0-49484400-1395781170_thumb.jpg

IMHO it looks alot better. So....which is better? Scratchbuilt or cut down? (Comments/Views welcome :) )

post-21664-0-59657000-1395781328_thumb.jpg

This is how my workbench looks now with 6 wagons on the go...

post-21664-0-97090100-1395781491_thumb.jpg

And lastly, I have finished the 67's front ends and they look ace!

WIPAC clusters are in the post....

Thanks

Evenings,

What interesting weather we're having (Here anyway...lightning bolts and earth shaking thunder! :O )

Following a bulk order from Howes, I can progress on the 37...

first some cast class 60 buffer to replace the spindley plastic ViTrains ones...

post-21664-0-10279600-1395954636_thumb.jpg

And to transform the nose, 'oOo' wipac clusters, that i've drilled out...

post-21664-0-37314800-1395954680_thumb.jpg

and placed on to see...IMHO it looks quite good!

post-21664-0-60123700-1395954647_thumb.jpg

I've also added etched windscreens and cast horns at this point...

post-21664-0-63206400-1395954668_thumb.jpg

They transform this 'toy' immensely!

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi,

Things are coming together now 'tractor' wise...the noses look how I want....

The cluseters were glued to thin strips of styrene, then more and were filed down so they fit OK, and I will fill them later

post-21664-0-51223300-1396129051_thumb.jpg

This pic shows the clusters glued in place with the hole(s) for the MW socket drilled.

This when the MW socket has been cut out more with a knife, and sanded smooth...

post-21664-0-00337900-1396129026_thumb.jpg

...And placed next to the body to give me an Idea of where i'm up to....

HI,

Not done an update for a while...so here goes...

My new laptop doesn't let me add the photos to the post, so for now ill have to number them.

1. The class 67 has had the lights painted black and TMD lower cable boxes fitted, that's it...

2. In one of the nuclear flask wagons, I have added a Black Cat Tech. flasher unit, which is really compact, and with a bit of butchery can be fitted in :butcher:

3, The 37 needed a window blanking, so this is the backplate fitted before filler.

4. The 37 bogies have had the axleboxes painted and the springs.

5. The bufferbeams have been fully detailed with PHDesigns ploughs, and pipes.

6. This was the test run of the reassembled chassis, and I popped the body on to see what it would be like.

7. I also took out the 2 little pins on the bottom of the bogie, which lowers the ride height enough to make it sit better on the bogies. The only problem is the slight discrepancy in the height of wagons compared to the buffers, but I can live with that :)

8. I have re kindled the VT 57 project, and have since detailed the bufferbeams with all the pipes, and made jumper cables out of elastic.

9. Finally, here's a pic of the flask wagon with the tail lamp lit up.

Jack.

HI,

Sorry I haven't updated for a while, I just haven't had any time

I've been busy making a new chassis for a Hornby cl 20 to be a DRS one, as I find the current one a little bulky. I could reinstate the motor, but I don't know whether I'll bother. There's a progression of pics showing this. I have also started to smooth down the window frames for the etched reinforced ones.

I have filled in the holes at the top of the DRS 37 with some plastic strip, and it should be effective once filed down. I wonder how much longer '259, or any other 37s in DRSs fleet, will stay in the old compass livery, seeing as 37423 and 37218 have already been changed... :dontknow:

The Bufferbeam on the VT 57 is finished, and I am making a start on adding the marker lights that are absent on it. I have soldered up 2 0603 type LEDs and mounted them in the black plastic light surround, and have half made a circuit board to be powered off the decoder light outputs.

I've added the TMD cables to the 67 using thin stainless steel wire, and also I think I need to get on with some projects in the drawer...a Colas/DBS 'tug'? A DBS/Royal 'skip'? A DRS 'Skoda'? A Colas 'Sparkie'? Who knows.........

Jack.

Morning,

I've started a half term project, to convert a BG into a network rail yellow example, 6263, just like a certain yellow wizard did... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/53157-newbryfords-mostly-yellow-workbench/?p=634570

To do this I've had to fill and file the roof, taking out the periscope blanking plates and handrail holes...post-21664-0-25918100-1401014055_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-17448000-1401014076_thumb.jpg

I've also roughly filled two sets of doors and windows because I'm modelling it in its later appearance, and I'll sand them down after.

post-21664-0-16079200-1401014044_thumb.jpg

Finally, I've made new fuel tanks/ battery boxes out of plastikard, and added the strapping with strips of thinner stuff...

Thanks,

How will you do the lights? LEDS? I wondered if the deluxe 'glue' they use to make windows might be of any use?

Jaz,

I started filing 2mm 'lighthouse' LEDs down to fit in the hole, but made a mess of it so I've left it for now, but yes I will.

The 'Glue 'n' Glaze' glue is useful once finished to fill in any gaps between the LED and the hole, so yeah I'll utilise that too.

Thanks,

Jack.

As promised, a progression of pics showing the filling/filing process....

First rough fill, lots of air holes, some cracks where it has shrunk, and some imperfections...

post-21664-0-73271100-1401045636_thumb.jpg

Second fill, still some air holes and some minor blemishes...

post-21664-0-22182200-1401045651_thumb.jpg

Last fill...nearly perfect, a couple of imperfections in the paint (sanded bits), and you can see the filled bits because the paint was thin...I would have applied another, but rain stopped play :(

post-21664-0-35991000-1401045669_thumb.jpg

I have smoothed down the ends....

post-21664-0-92628200-1401046181_thumb.jpg

In readiness for the rain covers for the electrical cables, made from tube plastikard...

post-21664-0-43022500-1401046317_thumb.jpg

Finally, the underframe and battery boxes/fuel tanks have been painted black.post-21664-0-08312300-1401045684_thumb.jpg

Morning,

Side one is now finished work wise...into the paint shop next!

post-21664-0-49740000-1401102371_thumb.jpg

I've added handrails made of wire and superglued them behind to replace the moulded ones...

post-21664-0-54104600-1401102379_thumb.jpg

One more coat of White and that'll be it! Side two has had the first coat of primer, and the second fill is currently drying.

After much filling...filing...priming...both sides are finished in terms of prepping, next ill spray them up and do the decals...when I buy them!

post-21664-0-70304200-1401190774_thumb.jpg

They are as close to perfect as I'm gonna get.

After spraying the roof with Humbrol grey primer, I compared it to photos, and it's almost a perfect match!

So I'll add the roof vents and exhaust pipe, and leave it at that.

I've put a classified ad in to swap anyone who has B4 bogies...and I really need them. Anyone got any to swap?

Jack.

Hi,

I've finished the coach ends with handrails (plastic coated wire) and electrical connectors. These were made from plastic tube and the insulation off some wires.

post-21664-0-82612100-1401203883_thumb.jpg

They have been glued under the covers with some square section, and linked with elastic...

Hi Jack,

It's coming along nicely.

What are you using for the bodysde windows that are covered with louvres? I used Evergreen Clapboard (I think it was ref no.4031) It's worth doing the louvres before painting, especially as they have square corners, as opposed to the roundec corners of the original windows

Thanks Mick,

I am planning to, but I a) can't get to the model shop for a while, b ) don't have any money, and c) the project will soon stall because I cannot swap anyone for some B4 bogies, and I can't buy them 'cause I'm skint...

So that's the situation, but yes I will use the clapboard.

My attention has now turned to my layout come diorama, Tighte End Yard (link in my sig.)

TFN,

Jack. :(

Hi,

Quick 'genny' update...

The cant rail lines have been painted (masking tape and orange paint ;) ), and the connectors and handrails have too...

I've also just added steps on the fuel tanks made from strips of thin plasticard:
