Excellent! You've done a cracking job on this one and your wiring is much neater than my attempts :)

Cheers Will! Keep it simple...I try and use the least amount of wire as possible (because I'm a cheapskate). I was surprised it fit on the chassis first time, as there's usually something in the way.

Nice work Jack! The lights certainly do look better! The 68 is a superb model - I am tempted...

Many thanks Will, I was sitting on the fence too but I bit the bullet because I saw the lights were shocking, and wanted to try and improve them somehow!

Top work jack..

Will look and sound brill on DL at weekend....in till it gets parked in big shed and blocked in by wagons ..

..coach's and demic locos!

Loco stopped for repairs to F2 and F 3!

G

I'll be trying to make sure it's on show, especially as a pair of full size Cats transferred to the RTC yesterday. I can inform you that F2 and F3 are fully (and loudly) functioning!!

Thanks,

Jack.

Great work on the 68. I wonder what the 68s are for at the RTC. High speed ex-67 yellow trains?

Shawplan etched nameplates have been stuck on with strong double sided tape, and the rear bufferbeam has been reassembled, with the buffers held in by friction and blu tack! When I ran it quickly yesterday it sounded rough and today it sounded really poor...this was found to be due to a coupling on the driveshaft catching one of the speakers...I knew I spoke too soon when I said it fitted first time. A quick butchery to the speaker enclosure sorted this. She now runs sweetly.

If you’re attending the Doncaster show this weekend, come and say hi, but after the show I’ll make a video showing the lights and sounds; no doubt with some photos from the weekend on the RTC too. Don’t be scared off by Mick or G, they’re harmless really, as long as neither has your phone number.:picknose:

Oh one last thing...the project after the next project may involve butchering multiple units, one of which is on the way currently. Some etched bits and resin castings will also feature, and maybe a pantograph. Br*xit has put the cost of the vote up, so answers on a £20 note addressed to postcode DE.............

Thanks,

Jack.

Can't see the driver!

Or his/her hand waving from under sun visor!

Nice to see pipes clipped where they should be....not jiggling around like a set of bag pipes.

You can just see the hi-viz in the last photo I posted before that...I was thinking of creating a windscreen washer effect so I didn’t have to add a driver :jester:. I think the pipes are clipped so the coupling pockets on the model can function, but you rarely see them dangling on a 68. At least they’re not ribbed like the things Bachmann churn out to "complement" their 66s.

I made the video tonight of the 68, I’ll upload it tomorrow.

See you there G!

Here's the video. I tried to simulate a couple of running 'styles', with some revving up to start then a couple of full max power runs (station start etc), before the driver changes ends then moves off the depot.

Thanks,

Jack.

  • 3 weeks later...

Apologies for the lack of replies...one word: assignments *shivers* :no2:

Thanks to Mick and co, the 68 and 08 had a nice run out at Donny a couple of weekends ago, along with the dead Hornby 20 I did a while back. The latter can be seen hauled by the 68 at the start of this excellent video...well worth watching all the way through. Yours truly, Cal, G, Mick and Phil Mc all make an appearance too:

And some piccies:

A205A5CC-A702-48BA-8D6F-F16467EA1BB1.jpeg.a20149a66669946b589ea8835d0a2ffd.jpeg

In between then and now, much has changed. The 68 buffers kept pinging off, so I decided to fashion some brass ones from sheet and tube. This was originally to spring them, but I scrapped this idea! If these fall off, I’ll be surprised....

AEB73AAA-BA0A-4689-BA2D-CF50A8E49E97.jpeg.998c7b2da5103b7705997915f22e16f2.jpeg

And I posted photos of the 08 (which has been on DL before now) because It now looks like this:

FC2C7A11-3728-4158-BE65-00346176C8C3.jpeg.dd757da5d1e202c5a53e0419880c5fa2.jpeg

And no, I didn’t drop it...just may have shorted the sound chip whilst trialling speakers, and it turned into a smoke generator for a brief moment

An expensive mistake. Still, I’ve decided to add a worm gear directly to the motor to allow a much bigger speaker due to the extra room, so all is not lost.

I'll be focusing on my layout 'Tighte End Yard' in the next few weeks as it’s due for its first one day show in a month, and isn’t finished! I’ll continue with these projects though, and possibly start on the next one.

Keep modelling!

Jack.

More top work I see Jack,

great video too...

Thanks very much Neil, good to see you back on the forum!

Not a huge amount of progress to report this evening as I’m still cracking on with Tighte End and I still have assignments to do.

The replacement chip for my 08 arrived this week from Mr Petty at DC Kits, so I’ve been cracking on with this. I’ve decided to go all out and fit a huge speaker for such a small loco; one of Richard's (Roads and Rails) mega bass speakers, which has been chopped down and glued back together to fit!

I’ve managed to chop down the die cast gear tower too, to expose the final gear to allow the motor to fit as pictured, at a slight angle to maximise space. I glued up a plasticard mount, which in theory can be unscrewed, but I’ve tied it down with wires as there was no way of gluing it. The motor is the same Replica Railways one as was previously used, but with a Bachmann class 20 worm gear shoved on.

The 4 pin plug is to the lights, with the decoder socket wired up, sitting underneath the motor. I’ve yet to fit the speaker, decoder and stay alive...

Now comes the fun task of putting it all together!

Finally, the last week I was at uni I picked up a little project which should simplify making the lighting board...it looks vaguely familiar! :scratchhead:

Hi Jack

Great stuff as always. How did you make the lighting board? I've been thinking of trying to do something better on my lighting installs and DIY circuit boards

cheers

Will

Cheers Will...being at uni studying electrical engineering as part of our degree, we get access to a software package by National Instruments called Ultiboard, which allows you to draw up a circuit board and export it to a PCB milling machine, which the university happens to have! I find scribing out copperclad is easy enough, but because of the halos for a 68, it’s easier to mill it and design it on a pc. I’ll be using the 'by hand' method for my class 20 lights, including the nose lights.

Thanks,

Jack.

  • Jack374 changed the title to Jack's Workbench - Circa 2013: DRS Class 20/3 Conversion.

Now that I've finished getting 'Tighte End Yard' ready for it's first show (last month), workbench projects can be resumed. I finished the class 08 and managed to squeeze everything in, however it now runs like a dog so I'll need to try and sort that. Also the 68 function decoder has lost its identity again so I need to reprogram it and hope it stays. Here are some pics of some workbench projects on the layout. Plenty more pics in the layout's own thread (signature):

IMG_5153PSs.jpg.5d014db738d08208f3679fbae7f9f13a.jpg

I didn't take many pics as I was running it solo!

I've started the class 20/3 properly now, after milling down the chassis earlier. The body was completely stripped of details and then the ends had all protrusions cut off. The domino headcode box at the nose end had a recess of about half a mil, so this was filled with plasticard and then all holes were filled, including all the bufferbeam holes to provide a 'blank canvas' when I (re)fit details.

IMG_5438.JPG.b666f74bbc2f7abf6553a72976160f0f.JPG

I offered up the new Shawplan roof grille and realised the hole was too big, so the original grille surround was detached from the crude Bachmann mesh and glued in place, almost flush with the roof profile to provide a base for the new etched grille...

IMG_5440.JPG.7e3d011389c9c878e7034d942d22a8e0.JPG

I've got exciting things planned for this.......

Keep modelling! :paint:

  • 1 month later...

Wow it’s been a while!

A fair bit has happened though. To start, I’ve been plodding on with the 20, which has included adding some new plasticard exhaust ports to beef up the originals (as per the prototype). I’ve also added a roof grille from the Extreme Etchings range (Shawplan), and reused the original support as previously mentioned. Any small gaps were filled with Squadron filler and roughly sanded before the mesh and ring were fitted.

6EF3C445-4518-42DB-A78C-8851F7FF04DC.jpeg.48a53b69598b61265ae181178b2a8203.jpeg

The next job is to add the roof pod (NRN), again from Shawplan. The brackets which fold up were cut off the etch as the real loco has a filled in 'platform' for the pod, not a folded metal one as portrayed. The pod is currently plonked in position:

FC261970-34B7-48A2-8C79-E2FFE2589AA1.jpeg.710286cdefad93c822a63debd99cafe1.jpeg

Yesterday evening I spent a while soldering up a pair of lighting boards for another 68, this time the milled versions from university. They’re so much better to solder!

CB64C22B-B5C7-4A7E-8821-5251E3FD3FF7.jpeg.790ab6275e4d8a7e1abd91f45ec22a3b.jpeg

Finally, I had the laptop out and DecoderPro on earlier, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong with the function decoder, and in pulling out the thing I managed to break the circuit board, so it’s all had to come out now!

DDC8C8E9-9547-4BF9-83C4-D86DD403AA74.jpeg.f3cd5909c21c55ecde88035393ab383d.jpeg

One step forward...one consolation is the 08 now runs sweetly after I investigated, and all it took was a small shim of plastic to push the motor up by about half a mil so the worm wasn’t pushing down on the final gear. Below is a YT vid I did to show the new motor, large speaker from Roads and Rails and all the other gubbins. Slow speed running is still a snail's pace thanks to the gearing...

Unfortunately I didn’t take a photo before I put the lid back on. The speaker is the large black box next to the decoder: one of Richard's 'MegaBass' speakers which only needed slight trimming to fit. Someone challenged me to put one in and I can never refuse a challenge!

Keep modelling! :senile:

Jack.

Cheers Neil! :)

Since the last update the 68 has been fixed, and now runs as I intended once again. On the workbench, I’ve been carrying on with the 20. To start, the roof pod was finished and mounted. It’s a lovely etch and represents the real thing very well.

181404D5-F83B-4942-9EBF-DEF6ADD522A8.jpeg.520ce3de8c4100a3710f799cef8c88c3.jpeg

Then the cab windows were enlarged using the sizing guide, and I also removed a door to add some interest...

85B4B190-C493-4EB5-9AB3-EF6C81140C6A.jpeg.0449d96053826f54b5467b38734caa9e.jpeg

And a start has been made on the fuel tanks, picked up from Brian at Derby. Again, a nice etch that goes together very well. Below is some initial progress:

EE3FAF00-72D2-4C95-A02F-7AF1468C5543.jpeg.62664eac57b80abef1f5b87309105f2d.jpeg

Then progress stalled as I need to restock with some supplies, but as I’m going back up north for the bank holiday I’ll pop into Transport Models. I then took out my Hornby 20308 from the drawer, which was a mistake:

95B70ECE-66A3-46C9-B137-41D6DCABFE72.jpeg.e8249913df278b419462a0774c4e278e.jpeg

I was never happy with the lights so these have been ripped out, and the front has been flattened. All parts will be reused, but there is a small crack that needs filling (in between 'the eyes'), and I’ll be adding new lights, which won’t require the original holes. This only affects the warning panel area and bufferbeam so these can be resprayed easily. When I ripped the lights out, it reminded me how far I’ve come with soldering!

821B82AE-A5C8-45E7-8010-0B9C81BB2B7E.jpeg.2ccadad3b22b32f9c692ea99990a6cf4.jpeg

...Hence why I'll be improving the lighting. The pair will work well with full lighting and possibly a speaker in each loco...must have a chat with Bif about that at DEMU.

Keep modelling! :senile:

Jack.

After a nice weekend away at home (up noorth), this evening I’ve done a little more on the class 20. One of the tanks was finished with super glue, whilst I was able to pare off the full height body side grille nearest the cab to accept the smaller one. This was done with a flat (square) blade acquired from Transport Models of Preston whilst I was home. New grilles (shorter ones and a missing full height one) were added from Brian's superb etch for the chopper bodyside grilles. Following this, the tank was glued in place and some photos were taken. She’s starting to take shape!

The other tank will follow and will then be tidied up (connecting pipes and missing rivets added) before work on the lights can begin.

Happy modelling!

Jack.
