Not really Neil, I need to seal in the transfers, then fit the noses and windows. But it'll probably be next weekend at the earliest as I've got to get me airbrush out to varnish it.

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi,

Not much has happened this week, but yesterday I popped down to a well known Liverpudlian retailer, and treated meself to a couple of Dapol EWS MCA bogie ballast boxes...

post-21664-0-25424400-1417382190_thumb.jpg

So...naturally...I set to work... :butcher:

The first error that jumped out at me were the handbrake wheels. They stick out a bit too far for my liking, so I priesed them off and cut the short stub away before superglueing them back on. Then I added some wire to represent the test handles, as the moulded ones are rather anaemic,

post-21664-0-83475100-1417382208_thumb.jpg

Next I filed off the curve along the top edge of the bogies as it should be flat, and IMHO it looks a lot better now...

My model...

post-21664-0-91834300-1417382217_thumb.jpg

Prototype (photographed today):

post-21664-0-73704400-1417382996_thumb.jpg

...and Dapol's interpretation....

post-21664-0-90766100-1417383202_thumb.jpg

And the last thing I did was replace the very underscale extra buffers with more scale items, but still using the original buffer shanks:

post-21664-0-74784900-1417382224_thumb.jpg

Also in the last pic. I've added the knuckle couplers in the folded position, and a coupling hook.

The only other thing that's happened is I've painted the parts of the chassis on the 08 that need painting DRS blue, and added pipes etc.:

post-21664-0-92005200-1417382232_thumb.jpg

Thanks for popping by! :)

Jack.

How do you find the Dapol wheels Jack??

all my wheels short on code 100 track..

Thanks for the likes people... :)

I've had no problems with any Dapol wheels Neil (touch wood!), so maybe yours were just a bad batch? :/

If you haven't already, try them on numerous layouts, then maybe ring them up or such like.

Have you checked the back to back? If they are bit narrow, they can short between stock rail and switch rail on an electrofrog point (unless it's been modified with the link wires cut and frog switching added).

I have a few Dapol JNA's and they're fine on Code 75 and 100.

Cheers,

Mick

Evening all

So...with a few projects leaving the bench and going onto the weathering/varnishing shelf, some new ones can come forward. I've already added the blue 08, and now I'm working on an ancient Hornby Freightliner FFA flat.

And before you jump in, I'm not stupid and I know the Bachy release is imminent, so what can I do with my existing one?

I've decided to turn it into an FJA 'perch' wagon, used in conjunction with a special 60' mesh sided deck to deliver odd, nets to worksites: https://www.flickr.com/photos/15462727@N07/5485331034/in/photolist-9mHKP1-mj9sCZ-fC8nde-fiBepY-fC8nhR-fCnFy5-kMvnQi-kMxvRJ-e6kw6T-d8fNaw-kMxsfA-kLVYyU-kLUGAn

So, the model! :locomotive:

First I've cut out all of the filled in spaces Hornby needed to mount the little spurs on:

post-21664-0-89717600-1418592531_thumb.jpg

A big improvement IMO.

Next I made some new headstocks from plasticard, strip, spare ViTrains buffers, spare Bachy hook and a ViTrains tail lamp iron:

post-21664-0-93781600-1418592537_thumb.jpg

Then I drilled out the rivet that holds in the bogies and mounted them on instead with 10ba bolts...

post-21664-0-47215700-1418592549_thumb.jpg

Another project is to upgrade a Hornby Northern Rail 142. To do this, I decided to give more space the decoder and associated wiring (namely a bridge rectifier for the interior lights) should be in the unpowered car. So I set to work and chopped a bit off the motor housing. I also added the existing DCC socket:

post-21664-0-82276800-1418592556_thumb.jpg

I also did some surgery on the interior units to make room for the lights:

post-21664-0-70868900-1418592563_thumb.jpg

And lastly I took the middle pillar out of each door, and added a handrail to make them more modern:

post-21664-0-63590200-1418592570_thumb.jpg

TFN,

Jack. :)

Evening,

Work is nearly done on the FJA, as I added the small letters/numbers on the side with white paint, in prep. for weathering. All that remains for me to do is make the container thing, but that can wait.

Yesterday I recieved a parcel containing the Northern Belle pair of spoons 47790 & 832. Even though they are limited editions, I set to work immediately :butcher:

First thing was to fit some detail bits like the NRN ariel and lamp bracket:

post-21664-0-16233700-1419199567_thumb.jpg

Then I made a speedo drive from black plasticard and fine wire:

post-21664-0-33687100-1419199542_thumb.jpg

Now for the buffer beam area. I added the ETH cable from the sprue, but it needed a little mounting plate adding on the far right side. Then the buffer shanks, pipes, ETH receptical and a scratchbuilt coupling plate were added. Then I gave it a spray of primer to take the nasty sheen away, before a coat of red:

post-21664-0-86717400-1419199460_thumb.jpg

Next I put the buffer heads in a Dremel and re profiled them, and IMHO they look better now:

post-21664-0-05231800-1419199450_thumb.jpg

I also took the opportunity to paint the backs red.

Then the details were picked out in various colours, and a Hornby screw coupling was added...

post-21664-0-54488200-1419199573_thumb.jpg

Now for the worst part of any ViTrains model...the lights.

I took a length of copperclad sleeper and drilled two holes for two tiny SMD LEDs, soldered them in and then added another one underneath, connected with wire (the pics will explain better than me )

post-21664-0-85927600-1419199493_thumb.jpg

Then I did almost exactly the same for the reds:

post-21664-0-86084200-1419199486_thumb.jpg

And hot glued them both in:

post-21664-0-52164400-1419199505_thumb.jpg

And they work!

post-21664-0-73301800-1419199533_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-33312900-1419199521_thumb.jpg

No light bleed and you can actually see the rear lights!! :senile:

That's all for now,

Jack.

Evening,

So, to conclude the Northern Belle project, I first decided to superglue a small piece of plastic with a hole through it to the back of the etched headboard, so I can put it on when hauling the Northern belle...

post-21664-0-05574800-1420328295_thumb.jpg

I've also decided to replicate the bufferbeam with plasticard, and fully detail this so I can swap them with the un detailed ones with couplings:

post-21664-0-53245500-1420328305_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-78088400-1420328349_thumb.jpg

And now to the fuel tank area. On scrutinising pictures, I found some orange pipes that are not modelled, so these pipe runs were added in with copper/steel wire:

post-21664-0-61066900-1420328323_thumb.jpg

It's the same on the other side but minus the upright copper piece.

I've also taken the chance to glue a piece of plastic strip the the underside to form the emergency stop pull handle.

Bits picked out in Orange and red:

post-21664-0-56758300-1420328333_thumb.jpg

It really does make a difference when viewed from a distance.

And a final pic to show the cab inserts with hot glued light boards, it's a bit neater than the ViTrains light boards, with wires everywhere:

post-21664-0-64746000-1420328357_thumb.jpg

Finally, a hint as to the next project, the MK3 coaches in this pic (the mk2s are to become 977868 and RTOV 9701)....duly stripped/rubbed down and today I've started the project...pics to follow!

post-21664-0-37668400-1420328743_thumb.jpg

Guesses on the back of a tenner to...

I'll get my coat! ;)

Tonight I've done some more on the new project...the NMT (Network Rail New Measurement Train). The project stalled many moons ago, but I won some coaches on EBay so I've restarted it. The first coach off the blocks was 977993, the pantograph coach, so I've cut a hole in the roof and filled the windows that need filling with plasticard...

post-21664-0-05602700-1420401157_thumb.jpg

Next is 977995, the stand In coach when another one is out of service. Some new grilles and half a window needed filling...

post-21664-0-01282900-1420401165_thumb.jpg

Next I hand painted the gold bands on 67017, although I'll paint white over the numbers first before doing it again...

post-21664-0-48879200-1420401173_thumb.jpg

And I've fitted a new handrail to the front of half of the Northern 142 unit...a bit of black needed to be painted too:

post-21664-0-68069100-1420401212_thumb.jpg

Finally I've added ribs to the Freightliner ballast box:

BFN,

Jack.

Hi Jack

I like that FL ballast box, that's definitely a "missing wagon" that should have been covered by now (weren't Hattons doing one with Dapol??)

Always fancied a rake of those if you fancy building 20 or so..... ; //

Debranded version a possibility now too...

Evening all,

I have been slowly beavering away on some projects, trying to squeeze them in between homework, girls and 3 layout projects. :O

All day yesterday I was out on a scouts (explorers) expedition, 20 miles, so today I've been relaxing and modelling.

47501 was the first candidate, after already having detailed the bufferbeams with Hornby and ViTrains pipes, a Hornby coupling and turned brass buffers, I set about creating some footsteps. I'd already glued the (considerably chopped) ViTrains ones on, but these snapped off immediately. From the sprue of the etched front handrails, I cut out the following strips and bent them to shape. An advantage is they're painted white already, so the red will (should!) take well to them...

post-21664-0-72679400-1422213561_thumb.jpg

I've also added Shawplan Laserglaze, and will add shawplan nameplates in due course.

A full front end view:

post-21664-0-65179800-1422213568_thumb.jpg

And rear end view, with coupling loop:

post-21664-0-64983900-1422213575_thumb.jpg

On other fronts, I've added another coat of Railmatch 'EWS gold' to 67017, and it's a little better, so a third coat should do it and cover the numbers:

post-21664-0-46730400-1422213583_thumb.jpg

And finally, on the NMT coach 977995, I've sanded back the half filled window and primed it. It honestly looks better in reality, but I'll still sand and prime it again, then add a frame for the grills from paper, and they're the only modifications needed! :D

post-21664-0-18761900-1422213590_thumb.jpg

That's all for now!

Almost forgot...

After a massive steal on EBay comprising a Northern Belle set with 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' and 3 MK2s, as well as 3 Royal Train coaches, I had a look and compared my two 'duchesses'.

I prefer the Crimson lake one, but it wasn't DCC ready, so I've added a socket. I've also taken the opportunity to add a 2mm LED headlight and details:

post-21664-0-74136600-1422217673_thumb.jpg

I've also added a wire speedo like the previous black one (which btw I've now sold on...what's the point in having two?!)

That's really all for now! ;)

Jack.

I'm guessing this is a ballast box that gets fitted to an FEA flat as opposed to the MJA box wagon I think your meaning

Good link!

Not seen that photo before, they crop up in different engineers workings, when I find a working I can find many pictures of them but they all offer different details I hadn't seen before!

That's modelling! ;)

Evenings...

A good day was had at Stafford exhibition today, and I bought a couple of bits and bobs too. The highlight has to have been Charlie Petty nearly demolishing his stand because a customer wanted to see an engine at the bottom of the shelf!

So, I bought some track and points for my layout in the making 'Fordley', but also 2 C Rail containers, and from Replica Railways, some brake pipes, drivers, wheels, and two sets of B4 and two sets of commonwealth bogies. The B4s are destined to go under 2 Airfix MK2s on the bench; 977868 and RTOV 9701.

The commonwealths have gone under a pair of 'Your Model Railway Village' MK1s. This, however, required a bit of hacking, which I hadn't thought would be necessary, but they are a strange style of mounting. I had to cut off the plug from the original bogie and superglue it back into a hole left from the removal of them in the Replica bogie. Hopefully the pictures will explain:

post-21664-0-26196700-1422743228_thumb.jpg

I like commonwealth bogies better, this is the only reason to swap them!

At £2.50 a pair, I can't really complain!

Happy modelling! :senile:

Evening,

I have continued to re bogie a couple of coaches, this time the MK2s 977868 and 9701. I had assembled the Replica B4s, but the holes in the coach chassis had to be drilled out with a 6mm drill to allow them to fit. IMHO they look a lot crisper and finer, but the pictures don't show this too well...

post-21664-0-89394400-1423161742_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-55617700-1423162081_thumb.jpg

I also took the oppurtunity to glue a piece of plasticard into the recess on 9701 left by the corridor connector, this will be flush for the driving end (eventually!)

post-21664-0-84703000-1423161773_thumb.jpg

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi Jack,

Just a quick note re: the orientation of the B4. The radius arm - the short horizontal bar in the middle of the bogie, should be located towards the centre of the coach. You need to spin the bogie 180 degrees. (It's the correct way round on the removed bogie in the pic)

Cheers,

Mick

Daft question, the bottle of fairy. Are you using that to take the paint off the donor models?

Yes it's Fairy Powerspray, recommended by many on here...it stripped all of the printing off, but it didn't touch the block colours, so two sprays may be best.

Thanks,

Jack.

Afternoon all,

As I'm on holiday for a week, expect some more updates on various things.

I've restarted the FJA wagon after finding it in my drawer, and the deck has been made. As it needed a lot more weight (it's only a plastic spine wagon), I found an old lima carriage weight and this was glued to a strip (measured of course) of brick embossed plasticard, as it's all I've got!...

post-21664-0-55978600-1424184424_thumb.jpg

Then two strips of microstrip were glued to the underside to enclose the weight and make the deck look bulkier:

post-21664-0-53681100-1424184432_thumb.jpg

The ends were built up with microstrip and offcuts of plasticard, and IMHO look fine:

post-21664-0-45972300-1424184438_thumb.jpg

(Prototype pic: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dwbphotos/15557860775/in/photolist-eirzbf-miCkKk-eirLU9-eWWTU7-eWKqWn-b52Aoa-pGN6YT-9VmcaE-9VimAe-9VmcT5-9VinfX-9mHKP1-cRCAc7-cRCekb-cRCgXq-cRCGbG-cRBxjd-dj2pHj-dj28fr-dj2oKW )

Whilst I had the liquid poly and plastic out, I began to build up the rest of the Freightliner ballast containers, starting with the decks (brick embossed plasticard):

post-21664-0-09699000-1424184446_thumb.jpg

Also an update on the 'skip', the numbers were applied and teased into the grooves, and they don't look too bad considering I've no 'Microsol' or 'Microset':

post-21664-0-02991100-1424184453_thumb.jpg

The roof has also been weathered with black as I had the airbrush out; many other locos, wagons and coaches have now been weathered but not varnished. They will be once I recieve a new mask in the post, and then I'll upload pictures.

post-21664-0-97301500-1424184462_thumb.jpg

Thanks,

Jack. :locomotive:
