Off for a week now in Iceland with school...no railways I'm told! :(

Is the trip to Iceland as work experience? I know someone who did their week in Tesco's.................

Evening one and all...

Bit of a progress update. First off 37419 has had both buffer beams detailed and snowploughs added, with sprung Hornby buffers. All the relevant bits have been painted too:

post-21664-0-33571000-1437324177_thumb.jpg

Also one of a couple of summer projects is an RHTT set...well...the genny module at least! First is a picture of my box of bits and then the module with the handrails bent to shape and parts sat together:

That's pretty much it! Next three weeks may not be at all productive but the subsequent four should be jam packed with modelling! :D

Happy modelling!

Jack.

  • 5 weeks later...

So, a massive update! :D

Quite a bit of progress has been made recently, but it's been in fits and starts and I've let it back up so this update covers quite a lot!

To start, I've finally finished the pacer. I've installed lights in the rear car in the same way as before, 0603 LEDs on copper clad board.

post-21664-0-03130800-1439996316_thumb.jpg

I've also had to make a new connection between the cars as I couldn't hide a chip in the motor car, so I've hidden it in the motor space in the dummy car, meaning seven wires have to cross the cars. This is achieved using IC sockets, originally I tried a straight seven pin connection but then realised I could split it. This has been attached using a nut and bolt in the original coupling hole...

post-21664-0-42108900-1439996328_thumb.jpg

And a pic of the tidied up wiring in both cars:

post-21664-0-15067900-1439996339_thumb.jpg

I also sprayed the interiors in primer and painted the seats blue to lighten the interior up a bit from plain black, especially as I've added lighting now.

post-21664-0-83678800-1439996377_thumb.jpg

I feel the face of the bus is transformed no end by extending the black down slightly and adding new handrails. I've also painted the light clusters black:

post-21664-0-62898400-1439996523_thumb.jpg

And to finish, a view of the completed unit, with lights on in both directions and interior lights. This was done by adding 12v LED strip wired to the pickups. Also of note are the doors, which have been modified to the single pillar (later) type by cutting out the excess pillars:

post-21664-0-59185800-1439996600_thumb.jpg

On other fronts, on the RHTT module the handrails have been painted with Halford's White primer, which has done the trick, and I've added door handles, folded the steps up, and glued on the rubber window grommets to the doors, which ARE NOT glued in place BTW to allow for painting! :)

post-21664-0-81873300-1439996360_thumb.jpg

(One of) my little bargain(s) this holiday has been a Freightliner 08, DCC fitted for £32. I have weathered it using only Humbrol 32 and Railmatch frame dirt, brushed on then wiped off with a cotton bud soaked in thinners. I've also painted on Railmatch enamel Matt varnish to seal everything in. A neat trick I've learnt too is to scrape off the paint on the buffer stems if you want shiny silver ones as on OLEOs, instead of painting them. The pictures really don't do it justice, but I'm very happy, especially with the subtle streaks on the bufferbeams:

post-21664-0-02892500-1439996544_thumb.jpg

On the coach front, the workbench now sports no less than 7 MK2s: 977868, 9701, two TSOs/a BSO for repainting into DRS colours and the DRS escort pair, which I have started adding plated over corridor ends to:

post-21664-0-61170800-1439996579_thumb.jpg

Finally (breathe), I've 'weathered' (by painting) the wheels of 37419, and rubbed down the body and filled the window ready for repainting...

post-21664-0-04125100-1439996561_thumb.jpg

I've also cut off a pair of lamp brackets on each end that are not present presently, filled the holes with plastic rod and added a blob of superglue as filler:

post-21664-0-88050100-1439996570_thumb.jpg

There! You're now up to date! In the coming weeks I'll have to do a mammoth batch of weathering then varnishing, and painting as I've now got 3 coaches and 2 locos that need painting into DRS blue, not to mention about 20 items to varnish before being put 'into service'.

And as a teaser, the bench may well go blue once I've finished these projects, with 2 projects to be done in BR blue! :O

Happy Modelling!

Jack. :senile:

Some excellent work there mate, especially the 142, a big improvement - as you said, the extra bit of black under the windscreens makes a big difference.

You might have spotted it already, but the yellow panel is the wrong shape, it should extend around onto the sides up to the vertical panel joint, not follow the shape of the front end (though I'd say it looks better as Hornby have modelled it - were the first ones into Northern livery painted like that?  I can't remember seeing it on any).

Hi Jack

Great update. Loving the lighting on the pacer.

A tip for the RHTT (if it's not too late!). I painted the doors separately from the generator body. That way you can paint the control panel up and glaze the doors from the inside before final assembly. A couple of photo's here.

Cheers

Thanks JDW, I know about the yellow panel problem but I couldn't find a paint that matched Hornby's, so I've left it as it is. If it bugs me or It gets noticed often I may well change it.

Cheers Sam, and I know that the doors need to be left separate, hence this.......

...and glued on the rubber window grommets to the doors, which ARE NOT glued in place BTW to allow for painting! :)

:P

Evening all,

Yesterday I primed and sanded the 37 body and RHTT module, they both look fine so I'll paint the 37 when I've sorted the coaches out so I can do them in a batch, and leave the module until I've added lights and made tanks.

post-21664-0-26152600-1440179610_thumb.jpg

I've also sanded down the nose of the 37 so I'll add the jumper connection cut out and get it primed and painted (probably by hand) soon...

post-21664-0-75625400-1440179617_thumb.jpg

And finally today all I've done is painted orange cantrail lining on to the 08 prior to painting, then I'll hand paint the black roof on the 37 and 08, and spray the blue.

post-21664-0-24183100-1440179623_thumb.jpg

More soon,

Jack.

One more tiny thing done tonight...the roof of the 08 has been painted black. The 37 may follow so then I only have to spray the blue...we'll see!

Thanks,

Well after an excellent V fest I've done a small amount of modelling whilst recovering today... :music:

Firstly I got the orange paint out again to add a couple of bits of cantrail I'd missed on the 'gronk', and also do the nose on 37419 before I paint the roof:

post-21664-0-85170000-1440347630_thumb.jpg

I'll do it tomorrow once the paint's dried overnight.

Also on that loco I've done the nose ends. Firstly a hole was drilled of about 2mm dia. where the DRS multi socket goes, with 4 holes of about .5mm in a square drilled around the larger hole. Then the corners were carved out (very carefully) with a knife, and the edges were filed to achieve a smooth finish. Then I cut a chamfered edge on the lower inside edge of the hole, and cut a piece of plastic strip to the width of the hole and about 6mm in length, and chamfered one of the shorter edges. The piece was then glued in place, and flooded with superglue to seal any slight gaps.

On inspection of the HI headlight, it is extremely malnourished by Bachmann so I filed both off, and replaced them with ones I saved from 37259s nose, which obviously was filed flat bar headcode box. See 3 posts back to compare the lights, it's a vast improvement IMHO.

Also I've corrected the rear lights to the modern LED style as applied to all centre headcode box DRS machines. To do this the existing lamp type surrounds were cut off, and the holes drilled to 1.6mm to accept some 1.5mm fibre optic I have. Then a piece of plastic tube was drilled out to said dia., and was sliced into slithers and glued on to the front. The nose on the right has not been drilled out yet, so is smaller in inside diameter ATM.

post-21664-0-31026000-1440347615_thumb.jpg

Finally whilst I was at it I made a start on sanding down the Mk2s to become DRS ones, and the first coach is done:

post-21664-0-72707500-1440347624_thumb.jpg

All the door handles have been filed off too to be replaced with wire ones.

Happy modelling!

Don't forget to remove the extra bit of moulding on the door corners. Forgot what they're called.... Edit: strap hinges.

Cheers,

Mick

  • 2 weeks later...

Evening, just a quick update after a post (very wet) DofE expedition rest day.

I've begun a cut and shut project to create DRS' MK2d BFK 17159 from a Hornby BSO/FO. :butcher:

To begin I marked out the cut lines then cut roughly, leaving some room to file, with a junior hacksaw. On one side there are only three sections created, the other there are four. Piccies will explain better...

post-21664-0-09329300-1441141202_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-64781000-1441141211_thumb.jpg

I then snapped off the scrap chunks and cut with a Stanley knife the good sections. They were then superglued in place after filing adjoining sides so they made a flush fit. The next pic is the brake section with the first class coach marked ready to be cut behind. Keeping the brake roof section of the BSO means there is only one full (ie roof) joint that needs to be completely square and flat, the one between the seating and brake section. There is then only the roof vent positions and the interior to be addressed, but I've found a detailed set of pics from inside the coach, so these will prove invaluable...

post-21664-0-23143500-1441141229_thumb.jpg

More soon, then the possibly endless filling of all the join lines, which may take some time!

Happy modelling,

Jack.

Thanks Mick...I suppose now I've gone and done it I'll have to follow it through with the endless cycle of filling, sanding, filling.........

Today I've made further progress on the coach, firstly cutting the FO into two sections, and cutting the roof and redundant seating section off the brake section...

post-21664-0-17592000-1441217258_thumb.jpg

Then after much cleaning up and sanding down to get a straight flat joint, they were irreversibly bonded:

post-21664-0-29648300-1441217265_thumb.jpg

Next, as mentioned, is to fill and sand over and over until I'm happy that there are no joint lines visible.

Also today I've done more work on some forgotten yellow projects. First the RTOV (ex DBSO) has had the windows on the front and sides cut. To do this I hand drilled with a pin vice four holes of about 1.5mm dia. where the window corners are, then a larger hole to take out most of the material that isn't needed. Then the hole was filed with various files to create a square window with round corners. The middle one is done, with the two outer ones just about to be filed:

post-21664-0-06206000-1441217273_thumb.jpg

And the coach so far...next is to fill some windows and fashion the genny grille:

post-21664-0-30658600-1441217279_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-51160000-1441217285_thumb.jpg

And finally, I've re weathered the generator BG 6263 as I was unhappy with my previous efforts, and also weathered the roof (seen here posed on my 'Fordley' layout (link in sig.))...

post-21664-0-05564200-1441217346_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-79801800-1441217351_thumb.jpg

Only a couple more days left till my last year at school, so I'll try and cram in some modelling time this week before school starts, then it may well go quiet for loooong periods on my side, we'll see....

Happy modelling! ;)

Jack.

Something a bit different today!

Since the RHTT module has been sitting glaring at me I've decided to add the lights to it. I've decided to add working lights because it will add more interest to the train, especially for night time manoeuvres.

So I've soldered together two pieces of copperclad with two 0603 tiny SMD LEDs each, and I've decided not to paint black the underside where the light shines as it dissipates to provide more of a broad light 'bar'. I will however paint the top edges black to eliminate the light bleed on top. A simple curcuit inside connects both bars to a switch and 3v button cell. Pictures should explain better, and I've posed it on the FEA-S flats to give a flavour of the completed train:

post-21664-0-89449800-1441312216_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-21288100-1441312222_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-05523400-1441312228_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-64316400-1441312234_thumb.jpg

post-21664-0-09412300-1441312240_thumb.jpg

Since these photos I've filed a slot into the base to accept the slightly proud battery, and it now sits properly. I'll probably attach the two bits with small magnets.

Thanks,

Jack. :senile:
