Another photo on DL from the weekend. I realised I've been slacking on describing projects which I've finished as I've been rushing some through, so here's a brief explanation of the last two locos. The tractor 37716 and the Thunderbird both use Rainbow Railways (ex- R3Sprays) transfers, and neither went smoothly due to the large size of the transfers. As I showed on 716, I had issues around the grilles where I'd stretched them, and the same was true around the edges on the enormous (full bodyside) 57 transfer, including a small patch in the photo above where the transfer just vanished over the f in 'Years of'. Not a clue why, but I've learnt a lot from both of them! I found a pair of socks (clean though!) helped suck the water out with the 57 as tissues just absorbed the water and saturated then disintegrated, whilst cotton buds saturated within seconds. I've potentially got 2 more 57s (/0s this time) to do eventually, so more chance to practice! The 37 was weathered with an airbrush and drybrushing with RailMatch 'Frame Dirt', whilst the 57 had some 'Roof Dirt' applied to the roof to tone it down, especially the fibreglass panels. I can highly recommend the new RailMatch jars by the way...new more flexible plastic lid and plastic insert instead of brittle lid and card/foil insert. I should be able to open the lid more than twice now before the thing breaks...

 

Neither of the locos are finished either, as the Legomanbiffo sound chip from DC Kits arrived a day late to feature this weekend, after ordering it over a week before the exhibition. This will be installed and maybe programmed in a couple of weeks because JMRI DecoderPro doesn't currently support LokSound 5 programming, so I may borrow a LokProgrammer. I'll also look at the lights, by separating the markers and headlights ready for independent control, and also maybe exchange the headlight LEDs for the same as the markers, as they're less blue and may not need masking tape to cover the lens which is too dim IMHO. On 716, I've got a plan to turn off the headlights and cab light using the remaining two logic function outputs and amplification through other FOs. This will allow full control of all lights bar a no.2 end cab light, which I can live without!

 

A more relaxed schedule means I can focus on getting 'Tighte End Yard' ready for Blackburn show in 2 weeks and then I need to think of more projects! There's already a dead class 20 to finish, and the two locos mentioned above to sort out. I've also had a relative breakthrough on the purple 222, so watch this...erm...thread!! :no:

And so this is (nearly) Christmas, and what have you done?

 

...'Nout! Apologies for the lack of updates, literally nothing has been done between exhibiting Tighte End Yard at Blackburn and now, and I imagine this will be the case until at least February now. University, full time work and family/partner commitments to blame (in that order). :yes:

 

Thankfully though, I’ve started a smaller project; to recreate the power car from Eurostar set 3304, which was recently repatriated and taken to Derby RTC:

Wonder where I can run this then? :P

 

The standard Hornby model had the nose doors cut off with a new craft knife blade, following the join lines. These were then split, everything tidied up (knife and files) and the doors glued in place with superglue. Some hot glue will further secure these inside once the superglue has dried...

Next jobs are to drill and remove the cab side panel as per the above pic and add couplings, which will be a replica Dellner at the pointy end and a Kadee at the other to allow it to be shunted around. Also on the to-do list is replace wheels, detail roof well and pantograph as well as the blunt end. Finally, some graffiti and a grotty weathering job will see it done, hopefully ready for Stafford in Feb. I’ve got no plans to do the TBFO (seated coach in above pic) as the donor models fetch silly money on eBay. If anyone’s got one spare, then I’m all ears!

The big C is finally upon us...

 

And that means the university deadline has passed. As such, this evening I’ve been modelling. Aside from the couplings - cosmetic and working - the E* is now finished from a detail point of view:

The pantographs were tackled first, and use the base and isolators from a Lima sprung panto, the same used on the class 92 (plastic except the metal head), which I had in the spares box. The Eurostar upper and lower arms and the heads were reused, by heating (soldering iron) and bending the heads so they sit flat. More spares box isolators were added (sorry not a clue of the origins but definitely RTR) and a piece of steel wire connects them, in roughly the correct fashion to be believable. The existing 'stumps' moulded to the roof were hacked around too:

At the front, the missing side door was removed by drilling and hacking with some Xuron track cutters, then tidied up with a knife. Plasticard pieces provided a hole backing and representation of components, as seen from the previously posted pic of the unit at Derby RTC. Also 1.5mm holes were drilled then filled with plasticard square rod either side to represent the tail light mounts, again as seen in the pic...

And finally, the chunky wheels were replaced by some 14mm Hornby coach wheels, which had the pinpoint axle ends cut off, again with the track cutters which I’ve found are very useful!

They fit and revolve even more freely than the originals.

 

I’ll now paint all new bits, add graffiti then weather. Before that though, the couplings need to be added, and I’ve left the working ones up north so until tomorrow (at the extreme earliest) it’ll have to wait. I have packed a toolbox though, and also some DRS locos ready for the usual festive photo shoot...

Well it would appear that you’ve got several outstanding invoices from JT Rail Solutions Ltd, for the hire of 08892. I’m sure an arrangement can be made to write off a proportion of the debt from the hire of siding space for the E*, but you’ll need to contact the finance team to settle the books.

Well, it's that time of year again...

 

...the time for over-eating, over-spending and most crucially drinking too much! With the big C around the corner I doubt I'll post again with anything useful before then so today I did my usual Christmas photo shoot with Tighte End Yard. This entailed flour, a sieve and a tripod:

The key is getting the 'snow' even to be believable. A powerful vacuum cleaner is also useful. It was good fun, I can recommend! :yes:

At this point, I can also reveal a shameless plug. The DRS class 20 pictured above (still not finished, is anything ever?) I took plenty of proper photos of, and I wrote an article on its conversion. I'm very pleased to say it will appear in February's BRM magazine, which will come out around New Year/early Jan. What a Christmas present!

Well, Happy New Year all (even though we’re most of the way through January!), hope you all had a good rest and got some modelling done! :senile:

 

My DRS 20 article is in this month (Feb) BRM...very proud to have my first modelling article in a magazine. The team at BRM have done a great job with the formatting, showing the project steps well. Hopefully this is just the start...

 

The Eurostar has been plodding along slowly. I found that an EZ-Mate coupling (robbed from a Bachmann knuckle-equipped wagon) sat at the correct height when mounted on the existing coupling bar. A simple brass bolt hold the housing and coupling in place:

A cosmetic Scharfenberg coupling was made from plastic bits lying in my little plastic offcuts box. This, along with the hole in the side, wheels and other added details were painted black:

Next job is graffiti, followed by weathering. The real thing is now restored to full Eurostar livery (with all missing bits reinstated!) and left Derby last week for the Hornby Visitor Centre at Margate. As I’ve got another power car spare, and it was pictured outside the RTC in the short time between completion and road transport, I’ll model it's new state too. This should be a simpler case of detailing and gloss varnish!

 

This week I fitted a new speaker from DCC Supplies to my 60, which sounds a lot better. The original was factory fitted, and I hadn’t changed it previously as it was of the 100 Ohm variety needed for the LokSound V3.5 chip in the model. I recently found DCC S manufacture bass reflex speakers of this type so simply unsoldered the old one and soldered in the new one...

And finally, a very quick project to make the lights work in 37259. I'd already installed them then removed the decoder to tow 'dead', however I’ve since installed a sneaky little feature in this which required circuitry and motor removal. A bog standard Bachmann 3 function decoder was used, wired to the track pickups and lights at the front. It had to first be programmed on my little test harness, which includes a motor, so it could take the new address:

Hoping to have another (fairly) large project finished for Stafford, which I haven’t even started yet! I’ve got a week in the Lakes next week too on Outward Bound with work so hopefully I can get it running in time...if not then there’s always Ally Pally in March.

What's in side?.....what's in side?...will make G excited!

 

1...is it a 4mm scale nude driver! (Of the femail variety)

 

2...is it cake and a brew?

 

3...does it make a noise?

 

4... is it relay operated bonnet  top double doors...(hid in side once on a ballast job and jumped up surprising the driver! He saw funny side after a few.....weeks....but the other second men on job had a second surprise for me!....the jamed the access door to cab handle so I couldn't get out....back fire!)

A great weekend was had with Mick, Cal, G, Spike and Andy...many thanks for allowing me to crash trains operate! :)

And some new projects. A relatively quick one was 37558, which had suitably-sized holes cut in some Bachmann mini snowplough mouldings and then Kadees pushed through. I also took out the drive shafts, worms and driver to allow shunting:

And the Eurostar was airbrush weathered using Railmatch frame dirt, as was a full container rake made up of Dapol FEAs, Megafrets and a KTA/KQA 'pocket', a Hatton's FEA and a Hornby KFA. The containers received frame dirt washes and all locking points were painted too to tone them down a bit. I bought another pink 40' ONE box at the weekend so this will be added in time and all will be weathered properly, and the E* graffitied...

Finally, my pair of Megafrets had a flashing tail lamp added. This was done using phosphor-bronze pick up strip from Slater's and was wired to a Zimo MX681N function only decoder. This fed an 0805 SMD LED via thin enamelled wires. I'll post a photo from underneath when I'm back at the workbench. The flash rate was controlled with CVs, with a 100ms 'on' time (lowest permissible) and 500ms 'off' time, although this will be adjusted to 400ms as it flashed a little slow when compared to others Mick had.

As I said, some projects may get revisited for fixing/further improvements, although with uni having started again I think updates will be few and far between.

And Jack's stock ran pretty well apart from having a low plough on a 37...…...

 

I think Group standard flash rate is 1.5-2Hz.

1.5Hz gives 667ms time period, so 100ms on and 500ms off is near as damn it then.

 

And as for the 37, the PW gang (of one...) were quick to rectify the misaligned fishplate that caused the issue! :nono:

Great work, nice to see the layout in the flesh and I like the little detail of the multi cable with the 37s. You looked quite busy when I briefly saw you so I didn't end up coming to say hello and we forgot to come back!

Well, over a month without an update. This is because the only achievement between the last post and this Monday was that I weathered the ONE container with a wash of RM 'Frame Dirt'...nothing to write home about.

 

However, last Friday was my second of 3 assignment deadlines, the last being 3 weeks away, so this week I’ve done some modelling! :danced:

 

The first project to be tackled was my DRS 20, 20303. The powered bogie was intermittent with the gears sometimes not meshing properly. Upon taking it apart, the final gear before the worm drive had lost the pin through the centre, allowing about 2mm of movement so it could disengage. This was rectified with some brass rod, secured after with a piece of tape either side, and all is now well:

Then to the lights. I want full independent control but had to settle for day running directionally due to time constraints. This week however, I un-soldered the wires from the 21-pin breakout board and started afresh. Thankfully, I’d given each LED its own resistor and soldered in a wire for each light 'set', leaving the cab and night light wires as loose ends for connection later. For the nose end, wires were soldered to the breakout board whilst the cab wires were all soldered straight to the decoder to make use of the powered function outputs on both solder pads and the 21 pin interface.

Then mapping on JMRI DecoderPro took place. F6 and F16 show marker lights only at cab and nose ends respectively, and if either of these are active then directional (day/tail) lights are disabled at that end, achieved by directional lights needing F6/F16 to be off to work. F20 and F21 control whether headlights are on or which are on during normal F0 directional light mode respectively, which works for both ends. All other lights are controllable from F23 upwards. Hopefully it’s clear as mud! :yes:

And full test. This was achieved with F6, F7 (cab), F16 and all of F23 to F28 active. This can actually be prototypically achieved as each individual light (except red pair) have a separate switch on the real 20/3s...

A couple of paint touch ups and she’s ready to roll. I might tackle the 08 next, although I don’t expect it to be as plain a sail....

 

In light of the current global situation, I hope everyone is keeping well, and stays safe. An important thing to remember during this time though is to not panic (buy) and keep modelling! :senile:
