Jack374
So...the FEA wagons are having some surgery done to create a double ended version...the FEA-S. These are using Richard's (Cradgebank)'s moulded head stocks, which are a very accurate moulding, they just need clearing up (pics later) I've had to chop off some of the locking point 'spines' to make a Network Rail version (so I can also use it for a future RHTT, and these are the results. The metal weight is a $wine to cut through, but I've got three more of these cuts to make!... (I'll clean them up later) I'll do some more Thursday (hopefully!) Jack.

Just come across this pic - I started the exact same modification about teatime today and totally agree about the metal weight. I wondered why my mini-drill was beginning to struggle.............. The yellow Network Rail FEA-S are operated by GBRf and it's not unusual to see them on "normal" intermodal duties. I've even seen one on the Fidler's-Newbiggin gypsum , when it was last operated by GBRf. Cheers, Mick
Jack374
Yeah the metal weight is a pain, I tried it using a junior hacksaw! I've come across some pics of the GBRF/Metronet versions in GBRF container trains... I don't know about those, hence why I have created Network Rail versions...so I can have an RHTT, and use them for the ballast boxes. Jack.

The Network Rail RHTT FEA-S, I think, are dedicated to RHTT duty. It's the GBRf ones that get used on engineering duty with Salmon and Tench modules as well as some Freightliner FEA-S. There are also other varieties of single FEA, such as the FEA-D that is under the Balfour Beatty relaying train, and some more yellow FEA-S on the "slinger" rail train that I think, usually works from Wellingborough. Here's a link to a number of FEA pics of all varieties. Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted October 8, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 8, 2014 Hi Jack, Managed to get a couple of quick phone pics of my efforts. I used a well-worn down slitting disc to get into the excess spigot. Plan is to use a small piece of plasticard for the gusset and fill in with... errrr...... filler! Cheers, Mick
Jack374
Yeah I know the network rail ones are for the RHTT, but it'll be covered in filth so you won't know the difference! I can live with it.... Jack.
Jack374
Evening... A little more progress to report...I have done the other spine cut on the first wagon, and added plasticard pieces to tidy it up and look like the supports underneath. This has been coloured with a permanent marker...I know it's completely the wrong colour but it'll be so dirty you won't be able to tell it's different!... And just a progress shot of the whole wagon. New head stocks next... Happy modelling! Jack.
Jack374
So then...the FEA-S/F is almost done....just need to sort some form of couplings out. The head stocks look great once cleaned up. I've attached one using superglue on the first wagon... ...with reinforcing plastic strip underneath... The buffers are two diameters of plastic tube, the bigger one had to be drilled out a bit to accept the smaller one: Then some plastic sheet was cut to make the buffer heads using the originals for measurements. Then they were attached using superglue/plastic cement, and a coupling hook was added: A final view of the wagon as it stands now. I'll paint the new bits black, and give it a good weathering, then add new couplings. I've got another one to do yet! Thanks, Jack. Looks like we have a parallel workbench! I fixed the small fillets under the spigot mountings and cleaned up the headstock castings earlier this evening. I'm intending to use superglue to get them into place initially, then strengthening the joint with epoxy resin afterwards Need to buy a couple more FEA twins........ Richard Pike
Hi Jack, Nice job, for the coupling I initially tried Kadee's and a NEM pocket as fitted to the original coupling end but had problems going around curves, I have since made an extended brass rod similar but longer than the original coupling bars supplied with the wagon and they now run great, the only downside is that the wagons are still coupled in pairs but for my layout operations that doesn't matter. Jack374
Thanks Mick and Richard, I think I'll probably do that method of coupling, but with tension locks instead. I also thought about the keen systems design, but it's a bit of a hassle having to wait on them. Just been looking at some RHTT modules too......I wonder..... Jack. Jack374
Hi, Today I've finished the FEA spine wagon...only another one to do! For couplings I have simply glued a tension lock onto a piece of drilled plasticard, and added a bar underneath to stop it falling out: I've also installed lights in the 20: So I thought I'd give them both a test....I weighed the wagon down as heavily as possible to test if the coupling will stay on centre, and have the 20 on the back: Now before you moan, this shot was taken by the driver in the 'four foot' when he was looped Happy modelling! sdw7300
Good work on the FEA-F/S conversion. I'm not sure whether I've got the guts to mess around with the cracking Dapol FEA-B pair for my RHTT. Cheers
Jack374
Hi, Today I've finished the other spine wagon with chopped spines, new ends and new buffers: These now need dirtying up...may do it sometime next week while I'm on holiday. I've also added pieces of fibre optic to the lights of 20308, it looks a lot better IMHO... Next step is to add silvered buffers, give it a satin coat and add the window frames and windows. Happy modelling! Jack.
Jack374
Evening... Today I decided to get the air brush out and weather some things: I should mention I take the wheels out of wagons and tape the bogies to the chassis so they don't swivel. Firstly, the spine wagons, very dirty all over; I've also decided to bar couple these because I've had problems with the tension locks as they aren't sprung. Next is the 'Osprey', a light misting underneath and a bit on the solebar: Then the log carrier, general weathering: And that's it! General workbench update: 66428 : Need to modify lights and sort out running problems. 37259 : Awaiting varnish in prep for transfers. 47501 : Waiting for some goodies from a certain Mr Hanson at Shawplan. 67017 : Need to source some 'EWS' logos before respraying the gold band. Need to add transfers to ends. 20308 : awaiting varnish before cab interiors are added, then weathering, window frames and glazing. DC460000 : Hasn't been touched since last update on it. 'Genny' 6263 : Need to order some Railtec logos and numbers. EWS opens : ...Will progress when I've cut them all down to size. Osprey : Nearly there pending deck painting then top varnish coat. FEAs : Ballast boxes progressing slowly, need to order some RHTT modules, but that then takes it into a whole different league! Thanks, Jack.

Jack374
Hi, Today I've decided to do some more on DC460000. I've started to build the chassis from scratch as I only bought a body off fleebay, and I've started with the new suspension units. To start, brass bearings were glued into some plastic tube: Next some waste sprue was put in a drill and turned against a knife (a blunt one) to create the suspension shape. Then I took some square section and filed a round notch into it. I superglued the bearings in, and some extra sprue in front because I made the tube too short... I did this twice then glued them onto a piece of sheet (measured of course). The hole is so I can drill through for suspension (more later): Next I can make another one and then make the chassis. Happy modelling. Jack.
Jack374
Today I've decided to fit new handrails to the DRS 20, this being about 0.5 mm wire for the rails, and about 0.3mm for the 'brackets'. First I twisted some of the finer wire around an offcut of the rail wire, thus forming a loop of the right size: Then a length of .5 mm stuff was bent to shape and each end bent to go into a hole. Then the 'brackets' were threaded on, and superglued in place. Before someone points it out, I know there aren't enough brackets, I just couldn't be bothered to make many... Finally, a nose end top handrail was bent up from a 0.5 mm length and duly glued in place: All that's left now is to add cab rails (very easy), glue one rogue window frame on, sort out some internal stuff, weight the thing, weather and finally varnish! Nearly there! Happy Modelling! Jack.

Jack374
Hi, So, after a long pause after painting, 37259 has been brought to the front of the queue after I was given some resistors. This is how the light board looks now: And to fit it on the body, I've had to break off some plastic bits that are for attaching the nose originally: Now to test them! Front: Rear: The light bleed where the night headlight should be will be sorted when I add a piece of fibre optic there. Good good! I'll attach it later. I need to add the transfers to the body at some point...maybe tonight. Then it's done! Thanks, Jack.
Jack374
I need to add the transfers to the body at some point...maybe tonight........ Bachmann vs me... I'm very happy...it is (and probably will be) the biggest transfer I've applied....until I do a 47/57 in DRS' colours! Jack.

Jack374
Evening, New projects as a couple move off the bench....DRS' (ex)08892 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/7304949@N05/6053078049/), and 47805. My first ever engine, 08402, is the subject, and while it isn't totally accurate, it's all I've got! Stripped: And as I was dismantling it, I noticed the very appropriate shed code for its repaint: (KD, Kingmoor). Anyway, new boxes had to be scratch built from plasticard because it's not the best donor model: (The pinkish strips in the second photo are paper) Now that that's ready for the paintwork, I remembered I had a spare ViTrains body, so why not do them both at once?! Stripped and rubbed down. Next both will have the ends masked off (because I'm not going to bother respraying stuff if I don't have to) and recieve some primer. Thanks, Jack.
