Washout at Dawlish

Recommended Posts

Had to laugh, I had a quick look at the live webcam and automatically the chat comes up.

One comment from a chap in Russia commented "It's a very nice lake there"

A response was " It's the sea mate !!! "

With the WaveWalker having departed around a month ago NR have been busy on the next steps, and a video has been posted today of the first of the sea wall panels being put into place against the pilings.

And a week ago a tour of the site and description of the work being done was posted

I wonder if there will be provision in this tunnel for electrification. Whilst many many years off (if ever), some sensible design now could save huge amounts of money in the future.

how much of Cornwall and West Devon will be left habitable if tidal changes makes Dawlish impassable on a permanent basis

Robert, this is a classic "straw man" argument. Please be aware that the predicted tidal changes are measured in millimetres per century. As the tidal rises (and land sinking) have been happening very slowly for the last 11,000 years, since the end of the last ice age, humans have and will continue to adapt. It's what we're good at.

Much more significant is the once-every-few-decades storms (that have been happening ever since the railway was built) with waves 10 or 20 metres (not millimetres) higher than normal.

If I recall correctly today's update video it was mentioned that the blockades have been scheduled for March next year for the replacement of the Dawlish station platform(s?) - at least the down platform, anyone know if they are also going to do the up platform?
