Class 40 Pics and detail differences in the class.

Help!  I am trying to acquire a early (green) EE Type 4 for my ER (LNER) system.  I know that a loco with discs is OK but they seem to be rather hard to find.  So, does anyone know if the green split head code EE Type 4 operated on the ER (LNER)?  All the info I can find suggests not, but.  Also, when did the centre code green EE Type 4s appear.  My cutoff is 1962/3.

Thanks

The first centre headcode class 40 was delivered in May 1961 and the last in September 1962, though from D374 onwards were delivered with yellow panels. None of the split headcode locos were allocated to the ER as far as I know, but would have been have been visitors to Leeds, York, Teesside etc from time to time.

Holbeck had a few centre head code machines around 345 for working the Queen of Scots through Harrogate. Looked very smart in all over green

And 343 split head code with lamps

Don't forget that Leeds, York, etc were part of the NER until 1967 when the ER and NER merger took place.

So yes, strictly speaking, they weren't allocated to the ER..

No, they were all allocated to LMR sheds at this time.

Just discovered this thread, so another chance to foist my lack of photographic talents on an unsuspecting RMWeb readership...

Seems like I took them yesterday, but I guess they're historic now, and even though most of the locos are unidentified,  they might be useful?

I might have posted the Birkenhead Instamatic ones elsewhere.

Parthia again, this time at Northwich in about 1982. It's lost it's plate, but has a painted replacement

I was quite chuffed to get the loco as sharp as this with the old instamatic, as it's taken from a moving train at Edge Hill 13th August 1977

I think the nose end is D200/40122 as I believe that was the only one to have the extra lamp brackets. Could be more with them though, never say never!

The shadows on the body side of Parthia certainly look like the pattern of the roof in the first shot, if its the same loco or could d200 have been there too? No expert but could the original batch of 40s have the lamp brackets? Iv certainly never noticed them before! Edited by jessy1692

Were they not headboard brackets to take this headboard?

Kind regards

I don't know ?

You have got it wrong again Mr Bullock, the lamp irons on D200 were different to the rest of the class so it could take this headboard. :jester:

All twenty split headcode EE Type 4s were LMR machines originally so D343 would most likely have been working out and back from Liverpool (Lime Street)

Can anyone say if the Bachmann Class 40 is the right height in relation to the bogie.  Looking at all the pictures I can find it appears to be sitting about 0.5 to 1mm high (1.5 to 3" in real life)

Thanks

Which version? The earlier one has a bigger gap than the present version.

Nice shot Ray

I Reckon Headboard mounted on central lamp bracket there

Phil

Hi Phil

A lot of LMR D200s had four clips on their front doors. Two to hold the doors open, the inner two and two for carrying the Royal Scot or Caledonia headboards.

ER, and NER locos only had two clips. Some had the high lamp iron for displaying the Flying Scotsman and East Anglian headboards.

Too early on a Monday morning to check out ScR locos.

Nice shots!

FWIW that's not 346 at Mollington Street, as it's a split headcode loco - maybe 341?

Thanks stovepipe - number 346 was written in my 12 year old hand on the back of the photo, but I bow to the 40s specialists!

If it helps, I've rescanned the photo at the max dpi that my scanner will go to and cropped it down, but I'm afraid that last digit is elusive. Doesn't look like 341 though?

Brian - I can categorically state that that nose end photo is definitely, 100% Parthia, so I guess there were more than one with the extra lamp brackets!

I can offer no proof, apart from the matching nameplate photo, and the fact that I was there. I was quite exited to get a 'namer', and as I alluded to in my original post, it seems like only yesterday. The position in the shed of number 227 is etched into my mind. This was the only other photo of her that I took that day, and you can see the nose-end again peeking between two 24s.
