Class 40 Pics and detail differences in the class.

40 028 'Samaria' albeit with rusty patches instead of nameplates, stands at Scarborough in August 1983. She had just followed her train to the end of the platform and now waits in the sun for the 03 station pilot to clear the line before completing the run-round.

Hello Tim, probably just a typo but 3rd photo down is 40 009 not 40 099.

Thanks for these, please keep them coming, interested to note 40 015 with an air braked scrap wagon behind it, not a combination I would have immediately thought of but one that I’ll keep in mind for my latest 80’s themed ‘Depot with passing mainline’ type cameo.

Regards,

Ian.

Yes, it was just a typo. Thanks, I've corrected it. 009 was a bit of a celeb as the last vac only one.

I remember thinking 015s train was odd even then!

Just finished my model of 40062, one of the odd ones that were converted in Scotland from disc headcodes to centre headcodes with square corners.  Its made from a Bachmann split headcode 40. Bear in mind that the frontal view is probably bigger on your screen than the actual model.

A superb photo @Covkid which would make a great subject for a 1st weathering project directly onto a factory finished 'clean' loco...... plus, the assorted Engineer's train with at least 3 different types or shades of ballast in the first 8 wagons. Thanks for posting.

Apologies.  I cannot take any credit for the photo. I merely did a websearch for an image of 40121, then posted the link, not expecting the image to be displayed. The reason I know 40121 was in that condition was because I walked past it at Bescot in the winter of 1981 or 1982 and remember it's red bufferbeams.

Great piccie and thanks for sharing. Not sure about Bescot being the destination, unless you know it for sure. I would be guessing it is a Stanlow-Rowley Regis loaded gas oil train, probably turning left and heading for Portobello and Bescot then a climb up Soho with a banker, then via Galton Jn to Rowley.

Crewe Works, April 1983....

Not convinced this is blue, looks like green to me (note the difference to the data panel background). The date is definitely not 1983.
Nice shot of a tangerine painted cast shed plate as found on ex NE Region locos in the late 1960s.

Presumably given that bogies were a problem area swaps were frequent at works visits. Bogie from DB loco put on VB loco,  Pipe would have to be removed to prevent confusion I guess...

Is it as simple as that? Can a dual braked bogie be fitted to a vac only loco?

Wasn't there a 40 that got fitted with a class 37 nose? Or was it the other way round?

Some tinwork may have been reused but I doubt the whole nose for various reasons.  Principally that class 40 nose is shallower because the buffers are fitted to the bogie on the 40 rather than a buffer beam on the 37.  Grille layouts are different but both have a traction motor blower.

Yes.  It was.  You simply stop off the air pipework as it is superfluous. as with 40121 I mentioned back in the thread, the air pipe was effectively "corked" on the buffer beam

So two class 40s to add to the 56, double headed light engine 88s on test, 2 class 90 light engines on test, the 88 on the Tesco, a Royal 67 (right as they announced the Prince's passing no less) , two GBRF 92s and a class 73/9.

Quite a bumper day today for locos at the station.
