It obviously wasn't successful as it appears to have dumped it all in the 4 foot.

Another theory that didn't hold water....

This was the other end of the loco and another great photo by Martyn Hilbert. The loco was repaired and ran for about 4 -5 years before heading to the scrap yard. The connecting doors were plated over during the repairs and you could tell which Class 40 it was providing of course it was running No2 first. 

 

Class 40 40044 - Reddish Depot.

Is that a rare sighting of a Royal Train comms cable in place?

Most evidence is usually just the circular blanking plate on the loco front.

Also just noticed the stuck-on label in place of the 4th blind!

Now you mention I'm pretty sure it is, yes - there is a very nice photo f D371 at Coventry on a Royal working in one of the Ian Allen colour portfolio books.
