When I first saw this photograph I thought that looks a bit strange for the "Up Fast" and then saw your caption mention 'Loops'!

Great photographs taken during my teenage Spotting days.

Had an enjoyable day out on the SVR, with the green goddess, on Sunday. The loco looked and sounded superb, a real credit to those who look after it. Here it is, resting at Kidderminster, in my attempt at recreating the front cover of the 1979 Ian Allan Locoshed book.

Green Goddess.

Edit:- does anyone know what the w above the number means?

I have it in my mind that the LMR was split into to groups Western Lines and Midland Lines. I recall all the AC electrics being allocated as Western Lines in one of my old Ian Allans.

306 was a Western Lines loco from mid 66 till mid 68.

D260 a livery difference rather than detail, but an interesting one for modellers. Were all the Scottish based Class 40s with centre headcodes given this style of yellow warning panel in later green livery days? Reminiscent of the Class 29s, which were based in Scotland at this time.

Square headcode boxes as with other Scottish Class 40s.

I have seen D261 as a model on Google image search.

Images shared by Roger Gregory on Facebook, shared with permission. Original photographer not known.

Original captions.

‘English Electric Type 4 No D260 replenishers its train heating boiler at Stirling, June 8th 1965 at the head of a down express. photographer not known’

‘At Stirling with an E.E. Type 4 No D260 on the up 'Saint Mungo' is greeted by E.E. Bo-Bo Type 1 Class 20 No D8104 on an unfitted freight; 8-6-65. photographer not known’

Jamie

EDIT. Looking closely at the two photos, the marks on the far side of the yellow panel are weathering, and not dirt on the photos as they match in both images. Not sure if it is an optical illusion, but it also looks like the bottom edge of the panel is not parallel to the bottom of the nose cone.

Cracking photo Nidge. Wonder if that is D368 as has both extra lamp bracket and communication port for royal train working… she was a Scottish loco, not many had those fittings.

Was involved in a rough shunt later on….

Great! Looks a bit less bent there and had the mods at both ends then …. This is A end, t’other photo is B end.

40168 and 40068 were coincidentally the last two 40s I needed to clear them …. Copped 168 first then finally 068 at Warrington one day even though it was an NE based loco.

I didn't meet with Class 40s very often, being based in Western Region territory and being an infrequent traveller, compared to many/most others - I only went to Scotland once! - probably explains it. My loss I know, and too late now. Anyway, here are some photos I took in the 1970s - these are the 'south/midlands' ones. First up, the last one (!), 399 at Finsbury Park (only went there this once and 9018 passing on the main line cleared my Deltics) on 3/3/73 - notebook says the other two were 270 & 286 - sorry it's a bit grainy:

I've posted this one before (so it's floating somewhere in the Ether) but it's unusual so here it is again - 319 leaving Oxford southbound on 19/5/73 and heading for........who knows? Never saw one at Reading. Maroon coach in the consist too:

IIRC this photo of 40028 at St Pancras on 28/9/74 was the first image I ever uploaded to RMweb so about 3 years ago (another one floating.....) but worth repeating as I understand one of these particular 16-wheelers at this location was exceedingly rare - pure luck then (NB the potentially alarming 'damage' to the secondman's side windscreen is not visible on the original print, must be a scanning artefact I missed):

A Class 40 in its more natural London habitat - 40056 at Kings Cross 1/11/75:

A day trip to Derby on a very sunny 7/6/75 netted these two light engines - 40001 and 40039, the latter such a nice surprise I felt obliged to use two frames of my expensive colour film on it. Despite its reasonable condition '39 was withdrawn 7 months later and became one of only three 40s to avoid BR blue:

Enough for one day, I'll post five from points north (yes, including Scotland!) another time.

There's not many pics of 40039 about 👍

Good job I took two then!

Actually I have a third, taken in Tyne Yard in May 1974, but my cr*p Halina 35mm camera failed to cope with the fading light (the Kodak Instamatic it replaced would probably have done a better job!) so I didn't bother scanning it. The Halina was replaced later that year - wish I'd done it sooner because it did a lousy job of recording a very interesting year......

Nice set of photos.

319 southbound at Oxford - it was seen at Old Oak Common that day too, so I guess it must have come off at Reading - assuming it was an inter-regional working. However there have been a few cl40 and 45 visits to Paddington over the years.

40039 at Derby - it was seen at Chesterfield that day, on a southbound passenger working at midday, so I guess Derby found a Peak.

A little bit more on 319 at Oxford, thanks to the Aug '73 edition of Rly. Mag.

'A special train from Lancashire to the capital on May 18* was unusually routed through Reading and produced class '40' No. 319.'

* (May 18 was a Friday which seems unlikely)

So another Paddington, and then Old Oak Common, visitor.

Time to post the other northerly five I mentioned.....

245 waiting the off at Newcastle 28/5/73 - this was one of the few to get the old serif style numbers on blue livery. Three days from June and the steam heating's on? Must have still been chilly oop north 🙂:

541926742_730528_D245Newcastlenp.jpg.af76e5e4fd7f4c626d7a245f201939ed.jpg

A couple of 40s - 40048 & 40074 - basking in the sun at York on 20/11/76........I got there from Kings Cross, anyone want to hazard a guess at what hauled the train?! 🤔😉 It was standing behind me while I took these photos, was way off its normal territory, and is still nearby today......

1224325124_761120_40048Yorknp.jpg.24a55a0090fb329b84227a8db69e06de.jpg

631392416_761120_40074Yorknp.jpg.e1673798f6a0823e19d2068f55d36fd4.jpg

And further up over the border, 40047 at Aberdeen on 7/5/77:

1471079896_770507_40047Aberdeennp.jpg.2ccac2f803b94991187e60ff2de8f230.jpg

And 40062 - one of the Scottish batch modified from disc to centre headcodes - at Dundee the same day:

1026772683_770507_40062Dundeenp.jpg.da08bdfa957695fc3f06c8705af84acb.jpg

This was the No 2 end which later acquired a yellow-painted headcode panel with marker lights - or was it like this at both ends? Also the square-cornered boxes were not fitted to all seven modified locos, I believe a couple - D261/65 (40061/65)? - had rounded corners........but perhaps they started out square and were modified later? I'm clearly not an expert on Class 40s!

Was it 47077, which is currently in residence at the NYMR?
