Class 40 Pics and detail differences in the class.

Recommended Posts

I have started work on 97406 and looking at pics I am not sure if the inner sandboxes have had the pipework removed.

Also looking for pics of the inside of the cab and bulkhead.

Cheers Peer.

Hi, balders, there is some information in ' Modern Locomotives Illustrated, number 179 The Class 40's'. Basically, 40055, when it emerged from Vulcan Foundry in January 1960, was allocated to Derby for the ETH trials. As D255, it was fitted with a secondary generator for the ETH, and was then sent to Crewe  for trials on the northern section of the WCML. It was also displayed at St. Pancras on the 21st march, 1960. It was in this condition for some two years before removal of the ETH fittings and generator. There is a photo' of it on page 19 of the edition of MLI which I have mentioned about.

I hope that this is of some help.

All the best,

Market65.

I'm not very familiar with these loco's, but I "think" the headcode disc versions had differing arrangements of cant rail grilles? Possible that the later disc versions had a similar/same arrangement as the split/centre box versions?

I'd prefer if one of the experts would confirm this though.

The Green to Blue livery changes are a bit of a nightmare too. I intend to model D212 in 1968 as one of my eventual models and was suprised to find a picture of her in a recent Traction magazine in heavily patched Green livery and full Yellow end.

Cheers.

Sean.

There didn't seem to be a dedicated topic for 'Whistlers' anywhere so I thought I'd start one!

I was wondering if anyone had any pictures they would like to share of the class during the 3 decades these behemoths were in service and on into preservation, and also anecdotally which model best represents them in any given scale (although that might be best placed in the Modelling Musings...thread)

I don't have any of my own as I didn't possess a camera during the crucial time period, so I'm relying on those of you who were suitably 'tooled up' at that time!

Over to you!

David

Edit: this has now been brought under the original 40 thread...!!

Hi David,

there was a thread started earlier this year by P.C.M. to highlight the detail differences in the class.

I am no expert on the class details so if it is just photos of them at work I'll add a few,

are you looking for specific ones for your Prestatyn layout?

Meanwhile here are three of them at Crewe,

These are at Crewe Diesel Depot seen from the platform, and are 40013, 40126 and an unidentified one on the right, 14/6/83

cheers

Thanks chaps!

I think my idea was to start some sort of resource for all things 40 - I haven't seen P C M's thread so I'll go and look, but nothing came up in the search box.

I'm always looking for North Wales Coast examples, so thank you for this; very useful.

The LMR allocated locos had the nose ladders removed very early in their lives because of the 25kv electrification projects. The ER locos had the ladders removed less quickly but I believe all had been removed by c.1962.

No, that is not right.

I have seen photos on threads here showing nose ladders in the mid-60s, although for the life of me I can't remember which thread - but I did comment on them at the time as being very late to have kept one (assuming the photo dates are correct of course).

My eyes are bleeding, but I knew I would find one eventually (although not on this site).

It's one of Dad's photos, reproduced below to save looking at the flickr link.  The date is correct, he'd moved to Harrogate that Easter and it was one of his early visits to York.

Another one of D252 a year later with the nose ladder in place.  Again the date is correct.

299 (40099) at Sunny Morecambe by the sea 22/07/1973 It must have been some kind of rail open day as behind it is E3018 later 81016 bit of an excuse for modellers to have an electric in a platform with its pan up but no wires..

Class 40s were always far too common to be worth photographing.

Deltics and Peaks with their regimental names were far more interesting.... with hindsight a big mistake... :fool:

However, here are a couple from 1981...

40 111 withdrawn at York. The photos were taken in May and June.

40 074  at York on the 29th August.

Someone might have more accurate information -- this might have been 55 007s last mainline outing? The Deltic had set out light engine for Doncaster earlier in the day and had failed on route. York sent 074 to drag her back home. IIRC Pinza was withdrawn at York very soon afterwards?
