Here is 243 (or possibly 248) at Crewe in early summer 1974, without the D prefix.

Great pic Rob; ok, I'm going to ask what may be a silly question now: this one doesn't have the blue stars on it, so was there any reason for that?  Was it a timing thing, or were only certain locos thus fitted?  None of the pics I have seem to feature them, so I'm assuming it was only for certain routes/locos?

Thanks

David

For your interest Grafarman a  Blue star was a coupling code there were 5 types ,  Locos of the same code could be operate together and controlled from the leading one.

Blue Star - Electro-Pneumatic

Red Circle - Electro-magnetic

White Diamond - Diesel-hydraulic D803 onwards, D63xx

Yellow Triangle - Diesel-hydraulic D7000-D71000

Red Diamond - Diesel-hydraulic D85xx

Information taken from Ian Allen ABC 1972.

I think the most common being Blue Star as fitted to most Mainline  diesel electric loco's.

Hope this goes some way to answering your question.

Numerous possible reasons.

Repainted yellow end and not replaced.

MW facility disconnected/not working.

Sometimes they finished up on the bufferbeam.

Mike.

There was a period that the blue stars only appeared on the sockets rather than on the nose ends.

A couple of cross eyed 40's.

When modelling the split box 40's its always best to try and find a pic of the one your doing as the "eyes" can be anywhere.

40136 looking rather clean at Carlisle 10/08/1977 I beleive it was still a Green Machine as late as March 1977 so probably taken within a few months of re-painting.

Its interesting to compare the shades of Yellow and Blue over time.

The trouble I've found with most of my photos is I've concentrated on the loco when photographing rather than the bigger picture and have missed so much additional detail ... Oh to turn back the clock....

It's one of Dad's photos, reproduced below to save looking at the flickr link.  The date is correct, he'd moved to Harrogate that Easter and it was one of his early visits to York.

Another one of D252 a year later with the nose ladder in place.  Again the date is correct.

Hi David

When I was trainspotting in the late 60s (down south), we hardly saw any English Electric Type 4s except NER ones at Kings Cross, Hitchin, Sandy etc.....The excitement on seeing the next loco was a Type 4 was usally dashed when D252 appeared again. I am sure you are rubbing salt in the wounds with two photos of her. :)

Hi The rest of you

As for D253 with full yella and with its ladder check out Chris Ts photo thread there is another shot of her still with her ladder and a full yellow end.

This photo always reminds me of a wounded Gazelle on the African plains.....

A bit like this ....

No Gazelles were actually wounded to emphasise the above photo.... (It's having a sit down)

Sorry 40 fans

Liking this thread a great deal, as I compile my home-brewed To-Do List of mods for my fleet, based on their respective status in Summer 1968, which varies from GSYP through GFYE to BFYE D-prefix.

There does seem to be alot of differences on the class 40 looking through the pics so far of the BR Blue ones some have BR arrows at both ends some at one end , the split headcode boxed ones seem to have a variation in where the white dots are.

I need to get to grips with the in-built physical differences, rather the cosmetic and livery changes.  I'm self-taught on the way the class transitioned from GNYE - BFYE, D-prefix to TOPS, so this holds no real fears if I take a cross-section in mid-'68, I know what paintshop variants to expect.

Mainly I think I need to understand the physical differences attributable to the different boilers fitted.

Unfortunately most of my class 40 photos are from the mid-eighties so feature a higher number of Withdrawn or scrapped locos here are three from Swindon all dated 21st October 1985

I clicked 'like' for these not because I approve of the subject but more that they are an excellent record of what were sad times for the 40's - keep posting!
