The light brown deposits towards the front of the bogie I always attributed to mainline dust but I've also seen it on 40's in the yard - is it something more than just general dirt?

 

I can see I've got a bit to do on the fleet when I revert Prestatyn back to the 70's...

To be honest never really saw it until I was uploading these photos... but going back over the photos so far it does look like it was common for the class 40 bogies around first two wheels to be a lighter shade than the rear two. I assume the lighter is just brake dust / general crap and the darker is a mixture of oil/fuel with it been more under the loco not sure of the correct terminology for the gunk?

 

Very interesting though to bear in mind when doing class 40 weathering projects but thats what this thread is for :good: so more 40 photos everyone :friends: .

Looks like it's been driven across the Sahara!

Any particular reason for the epic dust covering?

I assume the yellow hue is down to the film not the actual colour?

Railtours at Carlisle

 

40122 always popular on Railtours here's a couple from Carlisle

Workington use to be full of 40's,i use to call round on my way to work (when I was apprentice ), just to see what was stabled there in the morning, of coarse never taking any notes (first kick) and, only taking pictures of something new (which wasn't very often, same old same...second kick),film was not cheap, wish there had been digital then!!

(third kick) this is the only photo of a class 40 I have on a coal train in West Cumbria, they were back and forth all day(admittedly I was a work, but still!!, forth kick)

Thats what you get when braking whilst it is raining, it then drys like that. It is a mixture of brake block dust, accumulated crap off the bogie and other debris off the rail/wheel tread. 

 

The 4s were prone to oil/fuel leaks therefore the centre of the loco often ended up either very oily or a much darker colour with the mix of oil and brake block dust. The oil/fuel/water mix would come from the bedplate drains that were often left open or even when shut could poor from various opening underneath. Oil/fuel mix would often be picked up by the rad fan and blown all over as well, might also be made worse if an oil radiator had split too........

Hi Ray,

Don't kick yourself too much. You wouldn't be the only one not taking enough pics back in the day. I was the same, just cherish the ones you have they are great shots.

Yep me too; all during the late 70's - early 80's I stood there watching 'em, but didn't own a camera until they'd all gone!

This photo irritates me; not because it shows two class 40s, but because there is a small headboard on the front of 40083 (the leading loco) with RPPR on the front.

 

It is obviously a railtour, and the slide mount gives a date of Dec 1977, but having looked on Six Bells Junction, I can't find it.

 

Therefore I don't know the precise date, or the location.

Another senior moment I'm afraid.

 

I saw that one and thought "Deltic and Cromptons, Devon and Cornwall, it definitely will not be that one" so didn't even bother looking.
