jrg1
Reading of the use of fire irons, I believe that The Great Bear's cab roof was cut back as someone managed to jam an iron between the he roof and firebox. First class weathering on the Panniers, by the way.
Popular Post Killybegs
I have, of late, been finishing off a few unfinished elements on the layout, namely, completing the vegetation on the embankment and weathering the factory and chimney at the far end of the layout. So, a rare birds' eye view. Apologies for the blurry bit in the middle. That's a scratch on the lens. I'm amazed the camera is still working at all as it got crushed when I came off the bike in New Zealand earlier this year. 28
Popular Post Killybegs
I found this old Pocket Money Kit a few months back when I was sorting out my unbuilt wagon and van kits. I bought it way back in the 90's, so it's taken a while to get on the workbench. I built it pretty much as designed except that I threw away the axle boxes and springs in favour of MJT W-irons and Rumney Models springs and axle boxes. The white metal chimney was replaced with brass tube and I used 0.4 n/s wire for the handrails in lieu of the 0.5 brass wire provided with the kit. I beefed up the end framing on the verandas with styrene strip. After a coat of primer, it will be painted in BR unfitted grey and will then be glazed before the roof is fitted. 35
Killybegs
In light of the discussions on a couple of forums of late re the use of RSU's, no soldering iron came any where near the above model but I have to admit to using epoxy to secure the white metal fittings. 1

Popular Post Killybegs
My current project is a JLRT/David Geen/Malcolm Mitchell 4575 kit. This has appeared in many guises, initially as a Churchward model and finally as a 4mm version of the JLRT 7mm kit, marketed by David Geen. My box of goodies appeared to be a hotchpotch of these with parts, instructions and drawings not being always compatible. I managed to acquire another set of drawings and instructions from another S4 Society member and, with a certain amount of cross referencing, managed to get the chassis built, albeit with a few modifications along the way. With the chassis finally finished, I made a start on the body. This went reasonably well until I got to the point of fixing the detail overlays. Unfortunately there didn't appear to be anything to fix them to, either on the bunker or the upper part of the cab. There was also very little in the way of support for the front of the tanks. From the instructions it would seem that these areas are intended to be built with just the overlays, hardly practical with material only 0.12mm thick. I therefore had to resort to some scratch building which I actually found quite satisfying. The pics show before and after. 12

Killybegs
Thanks Andrew. I may post something retrospectively on the chassis build.
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted December 20, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2020 Have a look at this thread on Western Thunder, it's for a 7mm straight tank, but may well give you an insight to some of the pitfalls. https://www.westernthunder.co.uk/threads/on-heathers-workbench-prairie-ago-go.8390/
Killybegs
Interesting that she ran into exactly the same problems in 7mm as I did in 4mm. I have only checked upto the point that I am currently at. I will check out the rest of it. Meanwhile this is the progress to date. This shot also shows how over etching has almost removed the rivet detail. I see the bars on the cab windows are bent again. Tip, make them the last thing you fit before painting! 7

Simond
John don’t fret too much over the window bars, I’m sure they got bent and battered in service! Keep well! Simon
