Frappington Jct
Update! Progress has been slow due to exams but I have now completed the engine compartment doors and windows. Basically I've cut out the old guards doors and replaced them with indented plasticard ones, along with having cut out adjacent windows with a thin frame. As is often the case, I do apologise for the picture quality
Frappington Jct
I have now finally got to the point where I feel that I can post an update on my sentinel build. Admittedly, some of it was done over a month ago and I just never got round to writing an update! Any way, all of the doors are now on to the railcar. Four of these were done in the same way as the ones in the previous update, with the gap cut out of the coach and the door stuck in the gap. However, because of the more fragile nature of the part of the coach which these doors had to be fitted in (the area under where the window frames used to be) I had to fit the new section of wall that fits between the doors first and leave it to dry - to try and retain rigidity. The doors at the 'non-engine' end of the railcar weren't indented so all I had to do was create the upper half of the door and glue it into the window space, which made life a bit easier. The pictures below suffer from the classic problem of a camera highlighting many different issues, but the rough looking windows really don't look too bad in real life and from a normal viewing distance

Frappington Jct
Thanks - I'm sort of hoping it'll move along a bit faster now all of the structural alterations are done - although the windows may take some time...
Frappington Jct
Another update - in the space of 4 days! I'm doing very well at this! It is however, not an update on the sentinel, rather another flight of fancy (what on my workbench isn't?). Basically, it started off as the use of a Hornby 4 wheel coach as a test coach as it were to see how good I was at repainting coaches into BR carmine and cream - as I have a couple of Hornby Railroad teaks which I'd like in said livery. However, once that was done, I decided that it actually looked quite good in that livery, so decided to paint the other three coaches I have into BR livery - although not all are finished yet (in fact only the first has had its paint job done and I haven't got any transfers yet. The other big change I made to one of the coaches was the filling of two windows on each side of one of the coaches to represent a brake coach. This was done with just plain filler - and the remnants of filler around one end are where I managed to fill in windows at the opposite end to the set on the other side! I apologise for the picture quality

Frappington Jct
Sorry about the lack of updates. I decided that there was no point in updating after each of the four coaches was finished, so I decided to wait until they're all finished (bar transfers which should be bought at Warley) until putting any more pics up. As I can't seem to embed the pics, they're at the bottom of the post. I've now started on a program to repaint other items of stock I have lying around which, while not necessarily prototypical, look good to me. As a result, my next set of repaints will be three Hornby 'Thomas and Friends' "James's coaches" which while the wrong length look like GWR Collet coaches so when I get the transfers I think they'll be numbered as WR coaches and put in a cross-country rake coming off the GCR. I've only done one side of the brake coach, but have included pictures of before and after to show roughly what it looks like. Annoyingly, the pics have come out lighter than the coaches are in real life - they do look better in the flesh!
Twright
Nice work on all of them, what paint are you using for the carmine?

Frappington Jct
Thanks. It's not unfortunately - or fortunately as my layout isn't DCC! Like an absolute clot, I've just managed to lose the tender drawbar (hence the topic in 'Modelling help and tips') so if anyone has any ideas I'd be open to them! Frappington Jct
An update! On the Sentinel! What is this! Well, here it is. I've done all of the panelling (which was tedious...) and I've put the funnel on. This has come off a Walsworth Models J52 kit, and was very kindly given to me by John of said company for free - along with a whole bucket load of bits, which I'm sure I'll find very useful! This was cut down in height and then the lip reduced so that it looked vaguely like a sentinel chimney. It was then super glued into the well created for it at the 'motor' end of the unit.
