Arbroath Station

After some "bother", (thanks Ben A.), I've managed to add a passable representation of point rodding which hopefully looks OK.

i know I haven't done the posts to carry the signal wires, but my eyes are pretty crossed as it is, so I'm leaving them meantime....

The Caley 2P is waiting at the home signal because the signalman is nowhere to be found - he's actually gone off to find a set of levers for the frame in the box, and once he's fitted them, he'll be able to pull off the signal............

More work to do then!

Just a shot to show how the current project fits into the greater scheme of things.

The line from "Forfar" leads down the gradient towards St Vigeans Junction, while the lines at the left are the North loops representing the Aberdeen and Forfar destinations.

The line from the double slip leads into where I'll be adding either a goods depot or merely extra storage roads to take some of the excess rolling stock that we're all tempted into putting on to the layout.

The lower lines lead into the Dundee loops.

Lots of signal boxes in view of course!

Plenty of scenery to be added towards St V Junction, then.........

Some progress on the "link span" from my path and footbridge area downhill towards St Vigeans Junction.

Some formers in place and parts of a new bridge which represents the Forfar line crossing the Brothock Water.

I know class 108's weren't used around here, but rule 1 has been applied.........

The weather forecast for the next few days should mean more progress can be made, as gardening is definitely out.

I did have an Arbroath smokie, (haddock smoked in a barrel), a couple of days ago - maybe that counts, but it was really an impostor as it had been smoked in a barrel at the Farmers Market in St Andrews, but it was very tasty.

It is quite a shock seeing scenery on the "plank" as it has been bare for quite few years, so it's really due a bit of tlc.

But it is nice to see something developing am doing similar on a new road section on my layout I have a couple of buildings in the pipeline and will have to start on a small forest soon .Steak and chips for me but I do like a kipper every now and again have tried a smokie and it was very pleasant.

My signal box interior kit, (Ratio), duly arrived via the Isle of Man, (that's a first!), and much of it has been painted and installed.

I took a quick shot of the box in artificial light this evening, but should try another shot in the morning when the natural light illuminates the inside better.

However, I'm attaching a copy just to show that when the signalman comes on shift he'll  have a full set of levers, a comfortable armchair, stove, coal bunker, clock, desk and train register to make use of.

At least the levers can be seen in my shot..............

The scenic work on the incline down to St Vigeans Junction is also making progress - pics will follow when there's enough to show.

Had a fine messy morning adding contours to the "incline line" which gives more shape to the otherwise bare double line of track.

Now waiting while the plaster dries before priming, then adding "green" to the ground.

The underbridge needs a bit of imagination to add the watercourse flowing through.

I won't be cutting through the wood under the bridge as it's the support for the track, and I don't want it to collapse...........

Recently had some issues with the layout development work.

Due to the vibration of the baseboards when cutting out the bridge under the Forfar line, some tiny bits of granite ballast became dislodged on the crossover on the Aberdeen line where the line down to the former NBR goods yard runs off.

Because the Peco point motors are necessarily mounted upside down under the point blades, there is a small gap which allows bits of ballast to fall into the spring-loaded lever area, causing it to jam - oh dear!

The other points at the junction were thankfully unaffected, so I "only" had to access the point motor, and re-instal it at ground level.

First pic shows me hacking into the support board underneath the point to unscrew the motor mounting plate - it had to be done using a mirror, and of course the reflection turns right to left and back to front. After some contortions, the removal was achieved, with only a nasty cut to my left finger when sawing through the support board - mercifully solved by a wrap-around elastoplast, with the help of my (much) better half.

DSCF6493.jpeg.d71b54bfa3b43c863f2507cda2538ddf.jpeg

Second photo taken this morning after all had been restored, and a spare water tank put temporarily in place to hide the point motor - will make a p-way hut to do the job more permanently.

DSCF6494.jpeg.b86fc26c6e064ecaf5dc1191097eefa0.jpeg

The b&w shot is in the other direction with some overscale nuts waiting to be screwed back on to the fixing bolts where the loop line board leaves the "main line" round the loft.

DSCF6496.jpeg.70fbca3802be5981df30de10ddda18a5.jpeg

Finally (!), I'm adding a comparison shot between the real Forfar line pictures in about 1890, when the NBR line to Montrose was still single track, and progress to date on the landscaping of the model Forfar line.

DSCF6500.jpeg.c4039fd687a8018f948a1ff7839852df.jpeg

The sepia tone of the above photo is quite appropriate, given the brown undercoat of the present state of progress.

DSCF6498.jpg.1f0f2a1be76c9258882fcdd5ba7b562a.jpg

Lots to do on the landscaping to keep me busy!

Been adding "Nature" to the "Forfar" line, and took these shots yesterday.

Must go back sometime soon when there are some trains running............

Going by the sky conditions in both shots there seem to be some heavy showers about.

(There's still quite a long "to do" list of outstanding details to add, though).

Spent a bit of time today moving the Nature addition on - results below.

Stream banks and "water" still to be added under the bridge, though.

Three shots of the local J37, and one of the Caley 2F reminiscing about the days when light engine movements were common.

Gorse flowers all the year round, hence the saying "When gorse is out of blossom, kissing's out of fashion!", and that never happens!

Been a bit naughty today and pressed on with the "new" Aberbrothock Yard/Sidings.

The baseboard is fitted and the lead in track pinned in place, so that the general space available for the yard can be seen.

Two pics to show progress.............

The toggle switches in the middle of the photos are for switching sections in the storage sidings behind the shot, and will be hidden behind a suitable wall - or something!

Just to show I've not been entirely idle, here are two pics, one of the extra storage loop added to the south loops - the "Dundee" end, which now gives 7 roads to store trains offscene, and the second showing the track added to the new yard off the "Forfar" line.

I'm going to add a loading bank between the sidings and then a re-worked Bilteezi, (remember them??), factory and other sundry industrial units.

It should be quite a useful and interesting addition to the available routes for my freight trains.

It remains to my imagination what the factory will be deemed to produce, which will influence the kind of goods wagons which will visit for loading/unloading - challenges, challenges!!

Inverbrothock Yard opened for business today...........

Factory buildings put in place and appropriate rolling stock added.

DSCF6802.jpeg.5f38245a946f996b5db981b2386364c9.jpeg

On reflection, I think I'll turn the main factory building round  to put the loading doors in a better position for the lorry to reverse in.

Of course, there's much to do in adding ground cover, ballast, coal bin, crates of finished goods - whatever the factory makes (!), and fitting of backscene/sky, but a feeling of making some progress at least.

Glad to oblige, courtesy of Oxford Models -

Not only the boss's, the chief cashier's, but also the auditor's car are now clogging the yard car park.

In addition, another Tiger 'bus has arrived, this time in Alexander's Bluebird livery, and is pictured crossing the railway at Keptie Street in colour and black and white.

Finally, to maintain the railway interest, a class 27 was captured shunting some bitumen wagons in the main yard down below.
