RMweb Gold Popular Post Corbs Posted March 22, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 22, 2020 (edited) Was watching footage of my little freelance Avonside-ish 0-4-0ST 'Perseus' and reflected that it was looking rather tired. The massive amount of modifications over the years had taken its toll, it was so wonky that it looked like it had a collapsed spring. Took the decision to split it apart and combine it with a Hattons Barclay chassis. This was the moment of no going back... Of course some clever so-and-so stuffed the smokebox full of chemical metal all those years ago... BRUTAL hacking needed to get the saddle over the AB lower boiler. The three body pieces roughly plonked in place to test fitment, think this may work! New chimney required, obviously. RMweb Gold Popular Post Corbs Posted March 22, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 22, 2020 Went for a bike ride this morning (on my own) so I had the perfect excuse to stay inside and play trains for the rest of the day. A new chimney and something more Avonside-y was in order so I used one of the resin castings I made from a Caley Coaches example, this wasn't tall enough so got extended using the remains of an old Tri-ang one, may have come off the Dean Single. The clamp is holding the saddle tank mounting flange on while it dries. Decided not to affix the upper bodywork to the running plate, instead it is held in position by styrene L shaped flanges. There is a slight overhang at the back but I have seen this on a few real 0-4-0STs with rear bunker adaptations. The old front handrail was past it and broke during disassembly, so a new one fitted as well as a proper smokebox door dart. The black parts were sprayed, and the green bits that had been damaged were patched by spraying into the lid, then using a paintbrush dipped in the liquid paint, in thin layers, then sealed with Tamiya Matt Lacquer. The bell (required for Knapford Harbour workings) was restored to the bufferbeam, and the salvaged steps affixed with the help of more styrene L section. Whistle is from the 'bits box' of fittings. The air pump was also re-attached. Note the re-use of the reverser (repositioned) from the Barclay. Going to hold off on glazing until I get some bronze Trimits (I used silver versions on the Steampunk loco) to go around the holes for a bit of bling. Boiler fittings were re-attached where possible. Overall really pleased with it! Was a bit daunting but I think rushing into it without thinking too much certainly helped. Of course it needed a comparison with Bachmann's NotPercy. I think Perseus Mk.2 is much better proportioned (certainly better running) than its predecessor. RC conversion to follow at some point, of course... Also, bizarre that I once thought the NotPercy cab was a good starting point for a YEC one, believe it or not they are the same....ish BONUS PIC 15
RedGemAlchemist
I did like the original Perseus, but it does look much nicer with the taller chimney and lower-slung boiler. Much more like the later RWS illustrations.
Gibbo675
Hi Corbs, You build a convincing looking locomotive, large or small they do look just right. Well done. Gibbo. 1
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 23, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 23, 2020 Thank you both, it really means a lot I'm very happy with it, it's come out more or less how I intended, somewhere between this Avonside 0-4-0ST... https://rcts.zenfolio.com/industrial-and-light/industrial-steam/south-eastern-gas-board/hA0FE5DC8#ha0fe5dc8 and its larger 0-6-0ST brother... https://rcts.zenfolio.com/industrial-and-light/industrial-steam/other/hA88170CA#ha88170ca I think the original chassis will be recycled into the other SCC Bagnall Bill, as well as the RC gear, Pug chassis fetching a premium these days and it's already got the receiver mounted in it. I'm hoping to re-use the Barclay body to make something akin to the Aberdeen Gas Works locos with their tram skirts.
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 24, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 24, 2020 Tidmouth Yards, Winter 1960. An intrepid enthusiast has braved the cold weather to capture some rare colour footage of NWR and SCC locos at work. The tight confines of the yard here make for some interesting shunting manoeuvres. This is something I've been working on for a while, I hope you enjoy it! I wanted to give the impression of a small story unfolding, but with no voiceover or titles, just the engines going about their business as if someone was really filming them. This video took AGES to make. The snow was done by sprinkling flour over the layout, all the locos in the video run off battery power, radio control so pickup wasn't a problem. All the audio is from real locomotives, particularly footage I shot of 'Willy the Well Tank' at the Avon Valley Railway, mixed in with some ambient winter town sounds. I've tried to make it as believable as possible. The smoke and steam FX were all added in Adobe After Effects using green screen footage of smoke charges going off, which were keyed, masked and modified to try to provide as much variation as possible. I'll try and make another video on how this was done. 4
RMweb Premium Nile Posted March 24, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 24, 2020 I'm not normally a fan of fake smoke, but this looks good, well done.
RedGemAlchemist
Indeed. Though seeing pre-rebuild Percy again after just seeing him be rebuilt was slightly jarring, and I miss your narration Corbs.

RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 31, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 31, 2020 'Portbury' appeared on this thread a long time ago, it's a 'bash' of a Bachmann Junior loco (and lots of other bits) to represent the Avonside 0-6-0ST based on the Bristol Harbour Railway. At the time I could not work out how to make the sandboxes and ended up with some roughly cut pieces of styrene, badly painted. It didn't matter at the time, I was still chuffed with what I had made, but I wanted to change them as time went on. The originals shown here: I've been building one of the Hardys Hobbies Hudswell Clarke locos, but managed to lose half of it and ordered a replacement parts set, only to find the original under my bed. Handily this had sandboxes on it, so I used one to make a master in Blue Stuff, then rammed some Green Stuff in there and voila, a copy! I was able to cut back the Green Stuff version to more easily represent the non-cube versions Portbury has in real life. The result, much better shaped and proportioned, painting still not amazing but practice makes slightly better. I also took the opportunity to add some poles and tools to the front running plate (as per the prototype) and use one of the spare Hudswell safety valves to finish off the Avonside one.

RMweb Gold Corbs Posted April 3, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 3, 2020 Pretty darn close I'd say! Especially the smokebox and saddle tank layout good find Red. Today I've been getting closer to finishing my Hardys Hobbies Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T, will hopefully have a video of how I did this build. Quite pleased with how it looks, the transfers are not a perfect match to the prototype, being the wrong font and text weight, but I like their heft. Weathering and then glazing to follow. Oh, and it'll need converting to RC at some point. 13

Nice loco, I have one of the sloping tank sided versions of that kit to build, when I can remember where I've put it. I don't know if you are aware, but Planet Industrials have recently introduced NCB transfers. Might be useful for future locos.

I would love one of these (some of you will likely know my fondness for Hudswell Clarke tanks) but I don't have the free cash or the appropriate chassis. Not to mention getting delivery out here in the boonies in the current times is a nightmare.
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted April 4, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 4, 2020 Yeah it’s a nice kit, really well designed. Feel silly that it’s taken me so long to get on with it really! Interesting comparison here with two Hornby locos vs. my versions. Had not realised the Hornby ‘Bagnalls’ were quite this large!
RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted April 4, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 4, 2020 Some years ago, there was a layout in Railway Modeller (Gillian and Brown possibly?) that featured one of the Hornby Bagnalls as a 7mm SG locomotive. Indeed there is one in my position awaiting a suitably cunning plan to do the same.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Corbs Posted May 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 9, 2020 Back to my own never ending list of locos and stock to work on. Ever since lettering my milk wagon I felt something was missing to tie it together. Upon the advice from some friends I used a red cow from a Dinky or Matchbox toy (a replacement decal from ebay) and like it much more now. I also built this ex-MR van for the Ffarquhar ale traffic - note FQ designation to ensure it gets sent back there! Seen here before buffers and couplings were fitted. Something about No.700 had been bugging me. I had made the same mistake as with 'Sigrid' - the tanks were not exactly parallel with the boiler which threw all the lines out and lifted the pathetically small bufferbeam up in the air. With brute force I wrenched the tanks off, re-glued and clamped them, then sawed the bufferbeam off and replaced with one from styrene along with new buffing gear and coupling. Needs weathering! 17

RMweb Gold Corbs Posted June 1, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 1, 2020 Howdy! Because I'm a big shot YouTuber now I get asked to try products, sometimes I begrudgingly accept*. Luke and Oliver of Train Crash Models & Podcast asked if I would like to have a go at some of their new things, including a toolbox I incorporated into the 0-6-0 and a water tower kit. I actually used two water tower kits as I wanted to 'bash' something different. Here's what I ended up with: It's based on the egg-ended boiler water tower at Beamish Museum's Colliery, with a little platform. The rivet strips are from Wizard Models and the bucket and oil can are from RT Models. The base is made from Wills Sheets. I made a little vid about how it was done: *This is not entirely true

RMweb Gold Popular Post Corbs Posted June 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2020 I mean, obviously I'm a big shot influencer with a massive ego Been working on a few industrial locos, the 0-6-0 based on Lambton 1 & 2 is covered in this thread: Also had the chance to buy a pre-production version of Hardys Hobbies new Bagnall 16" 0-6-0ST designed by TSDesign of this parish. Really enjoyed the build and filmed it so hopefully a video coming soon for those who like that. The blue is Railmatch BR Blue, which was sprayed first, then masked and the black sprayed on. Despite having had an actual nightmare about it I went ahead with the GER-style lining worn by 'Princess' in preservation. The lining is by Fox Transfers. Lots of fiddly bits but the masked black lines helped to align them. Then I had a nightmare when I sprayed with matt lacquer, I don't think the gloss had cured fully and so I got this 'pinching' effect, thankfully the roof was the worst of it and it only affected the transfers and the top of the tank on one side. I ended up sanding it with some fine wet sandpaper, than clear coating again to get the worst out. The roof was repainted with acrylics after sanding back. Weathering was done using Vallejo smoke wash (a few layers) and then humbrol smoke and dark earth powders, based on some photos of the Preston Docks Bagnalls. I used a cotton bud to rub off the area around the tank filler as if the fireman had been sat there! Windows were added with glue 'n glaze. The water streaks on one side of the tank were done by spraying gloss lacquer into the can lid and carefully brushing it on. 22
