Been working on a few industrial locos, the 0-6-0 based on Lambton 1 & 2 is covered in this thread:

C5224BBC-4358-4C35-97E4-0A3A5D20D7DC_1_105_c.jpeg

Also had the chance to buy a pre-production version of Hardys Hobbies new Bagnall 16" 0-6-0ST designed by TSDesign of this parish.

Really enjoyed the build and filmed it so hopefully a video coming soon for those who like that.

The blue is Railmatch BR Blue, which was sprayed first, then masked and the black sprayed on.

Despite having had an actual nightmare about it I went ahead with the GER-style lining worn by 'Princess' in preservation. The lining is by Fox Transfers.

Lots of fiddly bits but the masked black lines helped to align them.

Then I had a nightmare when I sprayed with matt lacquer, I don't think the gloss had cured fully and so I got this 'pinching' effect, thankfully the roof was the worst of it and it only affected the transfers and the top of the tank on one side.

I ended up sanding it with some fine wet sandpaper, than clear coating again to get the worst out. The roof was repainted with acrylics after sanding back.

Weathering was done using Vallejo smoke wash (a few layers) and then humbrol smoke and dark earth powders, based on some photos of the Preston Docks Bagnalls. I used a cotton bud to rub off the area around the tank filler as if the fireman had been sat there! Windows were added with glue 'n glaze.

The water streaks on one side of the tank were done by spraying gloss lacquer into the can lid and carefully brushing it on.

Hmm. Very nice. Thought the Bagnall was an NWR one for a second, then noticed the red. Love the Lambton too.

Moving pictures, bah humbug. Totally unrealistic for model railways. And just when we had gotten used to colour photos too. The world has gone mad.

:D

No, seriously Corbs, I'm impressed that  you've managed to get all that going while still finding time to build one loco after the other. Nice work on the Bagnall. I suppose there are two kinds of modellers: Those who have had a varnishing disaster, and those who are are about to have a varnishing disaster.

Indeed!

I'd done a rough RC install on the Bagnall on Friday to check it worked, before refining  it today to add an on/off switch behind the cab step and a plug next to the bufferbeam for charging.

I did an endurance test - loco upside down on full throttle. I was blown away by how long it lasted - 3h36m running at a constant 3.7v (so about a third of maximum speed on normal 12v), from a 70mah battery.

By comparison a Bachmann 3F chassis did 2h30m using a 200mah battery.

1st pic shows the loco being charged - you can see the switch housing poking out behind the cab steps.

2nd pic shows roughly where the battery and switch go with the receiver in the smokebox. The charging socket uses the hole drilled in the frame extensions.

Thanks for documenting the build Corbs, very useful.

I think this is the most complete demonstration of 3D layer-smoothing I've seen so far. If I understand correctly, you're using:

(i) scalpel

(ii) filing and sanding

(iii) primer filler

(iv) putty

(v) wet and dry

(vi) (re-) scribing some outlines

In other words, to say that 3D printing is cheating and doesn't involve modelling is not quite correct!

Thanks Mikkel!

That is about right. I think that the production examples (mine was pre-prod) might be printed at a slightly higher resolution as I have seen some built that didn't need the same amount of surface prep and could retain the rivet detail better, but I was expecting that going in.

Upon reflection I was possibly a little heavy handed with the filler primer at times (hence re-scribing the detail).

I was really pleased at how the surfaces came out, though.

Morning all, I've posted this elsewhere but in case it's been missed here is my build video for 'Imperial Smelting Corporation No.2' showing how the basic kit goes together :)

Oh yes, for context for anyone who doesn't follow the 'West Yard' thread the layout is no longer in my ownership, I gave it to my friend Rich who is loving it so far. I did a final shunt taking the last few wagons out of the yard...

It was too big and the wrong shape for my room, I wanted to do something new and original.

Getting rid of the layout enabled me to move my desk so that it faces the window at last. I built some shelves out of odds and ends.

This should allow me to store books, materials, tools, stock for the shop, and have a different kind of layout. I'd like to try some dioramas first though. Everything will be RC-only (dead rail) and made to be portable.

Mate, did you by any chance steal that shelf off the tail-end of Snowpiercer?

Ha! 100% recycled. The top shelf is my old office desk, the middle one was an offcut from the TIE Silencer interior, and the scaffolding is the partial remnants of eBay's 2017 Pride float trailer.

Ah thanks Stephen! I've paused a couple of other projects while the room has been topsy turvy but as things settle down again, I've been working on this Hardys Hobbies 14" Bagnall 0-4-0ST. This is destined to join the other two in the TDA fleet of blue and black with red lining.

I wanted to customise it a bit, though, so this cut down Hornby Peckett B2 chimney is to be fitted...10B88827-01BC-491E-B67D-B5CDC400DC89_1_105_c.jpeg.0f8b32ddf51a5ee8e7f52559b4ebf1a5.jpeg

As well as this metal roof and the Avonside pattern sandboxes (since the TDA operates quite a few Avonsides already).

Sanding and filler primer is in progress.

Another industrial Bagnall, this one has been covered elsewhere, but I'd always felt like I'd messed up the 'pop' safety valves by not masking them properly when applying filler primer, and they lost their detail.

Sooo I sourced a replacement one from the pile of Avonside spares I currently have, I really like that it matches its stablemate as if the TDA had spec'd it that way (the 14" has Salter ones too).

Cheers Neil. Another industrial that's been on the bench for a while is my demo build of our Railway Mania B4 'Edwin Hulse' kit. James Hilton of Planet Industrials has made a lining and lettering set specifically for this loco to be sold alongside our kits, based off a photo from the loco in industrial service (thanks to Gordon Edgar for the photo).

I think it really sets it off! Now to spatter soot and muck all over it...
