The little 14” Bagnall seems to be trying really hard to imitate one of EFE Rail’s new Austerities...

Seems like I simplify this livery every time I do it....

Now with the black applied. Unfortunately inferior paint has caused a slight reaction which might need wet sanding out (around the filler lid and a few other spots). Ah well, at least its just the black and not the colour.

A trip to the (sadly closing) Hornby shop in Swindon landed me this Terrier, to join the NWR roster soon. The water tower was nicely discounted too!

I figured that it may be possible to remove the Terrier's red lining and substitute my usual white/black/white. The loco in this universe was previously No.58 Wandle, but instead of being scrapped in 1902 it finds a new life on the West Sodor Railway :D

Lining has begun on the little 14" Bagnall, this is somewhat simpler than its bigger brethren.

The buffers (not yet fixed in place) are the Bagnall 8-rib type designed by @Adam FW and sold via the Railway Mania shop.

Is your small Bagnall on a Hornby Peckett?

Yes :) it's the Hardy's Hobbies kit on the Peckett W4 chassis.

Do you think the Peckett cylinders are a good match for the Bagnall's?  I was looking at Alfred & Judy the other day, and noticed there was some suggestion of a steam chest near the top of the cylinders.    The Hornby Peckett has a much less pronounced steam chest, so I was concerned about maybe using the Peckett as a donor for the low Bagnall.   I haven't seen a Peckett in the flesh, though.

It does depend on which one you are modelling. On the 14" Bagnalls like this one, there is no protrusion above the running board as far as I can see - the sandboxes are above the cylinders though. I suspect that on Alfred and Judy the steam chest sticks up as the running board is so much lower.

What I was going to do with this one is cut away the vertical part of the cylinder cover (as I have done on the 0-6-0 chassis), and potentially also add a wrapper to increase the diameter of the cylinders slightly, maybe from brass or styrene strip, to bring it closer to the underside of the running board.

Hornby made the motor block as tall as they possibly could on both Pecketts, which restricts what kind of bodies can go on.

The 14" Bagnall looks good Corbs - I do like the TDA fleet livery.

Looking forward to the USA appearing in the TDA livery - they are lovely locos (I just wish there was a RTR one in 7mm scale)

There's a very useful book on the USA tanks which covers their history, and the examples owned by the Southern - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Story-Southern-Tanks-Howard-Sprenger/dp/0954485939/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&qid=1599210738&refinements=p_27%3AHoward+Sprenger&s=books&sr=1-1&text=Howard+Sprenger

The laser cut card organisers look rather useful.

I approve of the supervisor - very cute!

Been a while since the last update as I find it hard to concentrate on anything for long periods of time!

No big projects undertaken but here are a few bits and bobs...

The two TK&F 2-6-0Ts had been niggling at me for a while. They seemed rather out of proportion, the wheels were in the wrong place, cylinders too big.

I finally settled upon a solution, to remove the large rectangular motors (replacements to be sought), swap the original cylinders and valve gear back on, saw off the front, shorten and convert them to 0-6-0Ts.

Proportionally I think they are much better now. I made up some front and rear frame extensions in styrene.

Old vs. new. The L&M locos are huge for narrow gauge but in SG just didn't seem to warrant the pony truck.

No.7 in the process of being cut down.

No.6 is now awaiting couplings, revised cylinder covers, and of course a motor, but I am SO much happier with it now.

The ex-Furness K2 has arisen once more to torture me. The stupid rubbish FUD material from Shapeways had reacted with all the black paint, so that was repainted again. Here it is before being sealed with matt lacquer, which actually worked and didn't react for once.

I have stared and grumbled at it but so far it has not fitted itself with a motor or working bogie mount.

I also took some test print parts and combined them into an Avonside B4 kitbash.

The square tank is from failed print that had a hole in, the running board and bufferbeam is an early 'Portbury' one, the pop safety valves are made from scratch.

I used a taller round tank chimney and sawed the top off to make a stovepipe one.

The cab is the Lambton Austerity one from RT Models, made for me by Ruston of this parish.

The dumb buffers are from Train Crash Models.

The NCB and number transfers are Railtec ones, but the NW Area Division logo was drawn and printed by me as a test, not 100% happy with it but grime will help!

Most of the Harwick Colliery locos will have the wheel-type door handle, which I like.

Hi Corbs,

Is the trouble with the black paint reacting with the FUD material a problem specific to the type of paint used or is the FUD material the underlying problem in that it is not suitable for painting ?

Gibbo.

I'm not sure exactly, the paint was somehow sparkling like lots of glittery dots.

The reasons I dislike using FUD are:

-It costs a fortune

-It's so brittle. I think it's much more brittle than standard Elegoo or Photon resin. I have accidentally snapped parts off every FUD model I've bought within seconds of owning them.

-It smells like marzipan and I hate marzipan

-It comes caked in a waxy residue which needs to be scrubbed off (risking breakage) - I suspect I failed to get it all off resulting in the reaction

Nice work Corbs, no. 6 looks so much more SG now. Slight problem that it doesn't have a motor anymore either:jester:

The blue livery looks so good on the K2, glad you're persiting with it.

Indeed.

I've had OK results with ordinary acrylics on FUD, but only after a lot of work on getting rid of the waxy scum. I've also had some warping of a FUD part, although it was rather long and thin......

I'm really looking forward to your Edward. But don't feel you have to rush for my sake - there are always Nile's pictures to keep me going!

I like marzipan, but I prefer it when it's incorporated into some kind of pastry.

Hm, i heard sparkshot also offers models via his own 3D printing service with a Photon if you email him, might be worth looking into if you buy another kit off him?

Or possibly to replace the current shell but at the current stage with all the lining and etc i don't know if you'd want to.
