Finally, FINALLY, after so long spent thinking about it, I've finally converted my E2 'Thomas Allen' to RC.

For those interested in the spec:

Deltang Rx45 Receiver hidden in bunker

Turnigy 130mah battery in boiler

UM charging plug under bunker

SPDT drive/charge switch under side tank

Sparkshot Custom Creations LBSCR E2 (Long tank version)

Hornby (China) Thomas the Tank Engine chassis/motor

Can't believe it's taken me so long to realise putting the charger onto the on/off switch makes so much more sense than having another junction just for the charging port.

Anyway, I've not bothered with putting a voltage converter in as it runs fast enough, and probably slow enough....

Here on a few speed tests

That's really incredible - it takes a few seconds to realise that the model is not running rails then to feel how strange that concept is. RC seems to be a wonderful idea especially giving the capacity to improve traction by making rails or wheels from non-conducting materials.

Thanks for that, I'm in the process of putting together a shopping list to convert the Bachmann Jinty to RC. Like the battery pack https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-1300mah-3s-30c-lipo-pack.html?___store=en_us  , which SPDT switch did you use. please?

Cheers

Very impressive stuff especially the slow running!

but how do you go round corners without any track

That battery pack is a different animal - it's 10 times the capacity of my one and it's a 3-cell (3S) whereas mine is a 1-cell (1S), maximum voltage is 3.7v which TBH is fine for the layout it's running on.

This is the one I used - the connector is the UM type which I have standardised on, using the extension leads available from Micron RC.

These look like the same switch as to what I used.

I had this idea of doing a 14xx with a steering rear axle to turn corners....

Thanks a lot, I've ordered the battery and switch off eBay

I was thinking of the exact same thing! It would then be possible to recreate the scene from the titfield thunderbolt where it goes off the rails.

A little job done but one that seemingly has taken me ages to get around to, fitting name and number plates to No.700 'Erin', as well as some proper coal.

This loco is definitely too clean.

Where’s the drool button?! ‘Erin’ looks seriously good Corbs - very nicely done.

Heya,

Not much to report on from the cobblin' workbench. Most of my railway time has been used in working on the podcast and YT channel stuff for Railway Mania.

Monday saw me return home from The Netherlands, where we were commemorating the 75th anniversary of Operation Market Garden and the liberation of Eindhoven and Nijmegen.

I made this video of the event in case anyone is interested :)

Fab video. It looked like an amazing thing to be involved in. My Grandad was a dispatch rider in the Tank Corps so I loved seeing that soldier ride by. I drove the XXX Corps route in about 2006 on a two week battlefield tour. I tend to do more WWI but WWII occasionally. I photographed the WWI sites in 360 VR last year and would like to do the same with the WWII sites for my Legion talks. Thanks for posting.

Hi Corbs,

I am most pleased to see that you don't mix up setts for cobbles despite your cobbling.

I am also impressed that you didn't take the easy route and fix a carefully placed packing case over the hole, I would have done !

Gibbo.

Thanks both :)

Today I was struggling with mojo but picked up towards the afternoon.

Bit the bullet and took everything on the layout off to vacuum it, there was far too much dust on there!

This also highlighted a lot of neglect and unfinished scenery. The point motor next to the water tower has broken in one direction which is a downer.

BUT what else was broken was this knackered bit of platform, which has been like this since I bought the layout.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d0ac.jpg.5807d9f8d25ebd141d04008f48e5a73a.jpg

Cut it out.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d0aa.jpg.835e9e09fe8b29dbe998b56d843ef3af.jpg

Raided the drawers and came up with this (Wills?) sheet. The tab is to ensure the card platform top doesn't sag.

zVhPN0fyQVe2LKOFoATKwA_thumb_d0ae.jpg.9632fb04018f2b3f3767fd8255521d15.jpg

Primed it, coated it in acrylic brown, then picked out different setts, mixing the paint differently as I went.

Cheap paints have served me well over the years.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d0b6.jpg.138bf59dc6231dbb6188bf6b232e070e.jpg

This was inspired by the Copper Wort thread.

QT586aj6SmaavaQEafzBFQ_thumb_d0af.jpg.d780f270fb592f0c77e9d5ef53288ca0.jpg

Then the whole thing had matt lacquer, a dark weathering wash, wiped off with a rag. Then lacquered again.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d0b7.jpg.7c5631bc2ace51f9255ee7994f526490.jpg

Dressed in a bit more, the aim was to make it look like the platform was partially resurfaced. Note the door is lacking a ramp though.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d0ba.jpg.b46a2052b2867c8a1b7546e9ecc0b190.jpg

Reshuffling of sheds has happened, I like this setup as it feels more like a proper offloading point.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_d0bc.jpg.31f78903c424eb43b1cc73148bef5578.jpg

The rather posh car also got a coat of matt lacquer to get rid of the toy-like finish.

Puntastic title aside, very nicely done. I never gave the patience to do that kind of picking out so good on you.

By the way, has it ever been discussed what part of the NWR a network your layout represents?

Quite a few people have said that, but it didn't really take much time at all. I suppose if I'd used individual paint colours one at a time (and different brushes) it could have been tedious, but I just plopped some paint down on to the cardboard and kept mixing and re-mixing different colour combinations (as I wanted it to vary in hue and shade quite a lot rather than being a selection of colours).

The acrylics were easy to mix and the little brush did quite well. With a good audiobook (in this case Every Tool's A Hammer by Adam Savage) it was rather pleasant!

EDIT Sorry, forgot to answer the question. The nearest I've ever gotten to deciding is 'somewhere in the Tidmouth area'

More snow spam, messing around with the DSLR, trying to make the most of it before it melts/gets hoovered up.

'Triumph' at rest.

From the other direction come the SCC locos with makeshift ploughs. No.3 and No.5 have been clearing the line up from Brendam it seems.

Had a sudden flash of memory and recalled I had an unmade Genesis kits 3F/4F plough in one of the drawers, so bunged it together, removed the front vac pipe from the loco, then cut a slot in the plough mount for the coupling hook, then added some satin black.

I've not tried it under power as it's just posed on but when pushed it does work as designed!

While I can't say I was sold on the idea of the "Banana Pannier" when I saw it originallly, those brilliant shots of it snow-covered have convinced me that the yellow works! Where did you get its plow? The Steel engine also looks fantastic, have you shown that before on another thread of have I just missed it on this one?
