The Captain's Travels - Worcester

Last week I had occasion to make a work-related visit to Worcester, to discuss shore supply issues in the sidings behind Shrub Hill station.

Here are a few shots taken during the visit of the general scene at Shrub Hill.

And to think that it's only 30 years ago this year that I did all the basic work for a Worcester resignalling scheme (the first of three that I did as it happens although the third one was a consultancy job almost 20 years after I did the first one and instead of additional singling by then I was including some double track reinstatement; funny howe things change over the years).

Interesting to see in one of the photo's a 150 on the middle road in front of a 172. I wonder if they were coupled? As I understand a 150/172 pairing worked in passenger service last month or so... Again, you'd be told off if you ever paired up those two classes on your layout!

Must have been frustrating at the time Mike but its rather nice that your dastardly schemes didn't get anywhere!! Hee hee

Super pics CK - many thanks for posting. looks like you were mostly down in the yard - did you have time to check if the large disc running signal under the canopy on the down platform under the awning is still there? See half way down this page

It is - our structure examiners have not long done the annual check to make sure the support is not going to fall off.

I'm sure I recall seeing some colour light signals actually installed at Shrub Hill  in the late 1980's, presumably never used. I think it was part of a plan to remove the pointwork at Norton Junction and have two bi-directional tracks from Shrub Hill.

The existence of 5 more, now unused, levers suggest several signals have been missing/replaced/decommissioned* ;)

*encircle as appropriate

There used to be a scissors cross over between the down platform and loop at that point so yup would have been more signals there

Cheers

Always had a soft spot for Worcester, when I fist went, in summer of '74, you could see where the old loco works was.

Is there anything left of the shed now? I liked the shed there and also Horton Road. I once saw TWO PWM's at Worcester, but can no longer remember which two.

I think that the buildings in the background in photo 2, and some of the other photos, is part of the old Works complex, but even that is due to be demolished for some new development in due course...

I 'did' Worcester shed in 1963 and have a vivid memory of a gleaming Castle, Sir Edward Elgar, simmering in the yard; beautiful condition. Probably a 'pet' engine.

This followed 'doing' Barnwood and Horton Road earlier in the afternoon. Happy days.

Sadly there was no lingering on such trips to admire signals, buildings or other infrastructure, something I regret to this day. However, the wonder of RMWeb helps make up for that with threads such as this.
