Even better painted

More decals arrived from Microscale just in time to go on this van.

WC_09.jpg.d1b977e5653e9a25944dabb7343ab406.jpg

Some HMRS pressfix transfers also got used, from a Southern sheet.

Some weathering and matt varnish next and it's nearly finished.

I found time today to spray matt varnish on it, so now it is finished.

The roof probably looks too clean in those photos.

For my next trick I'm going to try painting a coach. For this experiment I'll be using an old Triang clerestory. Those raised panel lines should come in handy.

Looking forward to the coach, the old clerestory coaches are the main stay of my conversions so will be looking forward to seeing your method after seeing what a fine job you've done on the wagons as my painting skills are crap regards Steve

I won't be making any physical changes to this coach. I'm going to try out the painting method demonstrated here by Mikkel

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/75/entry-8235-painting-coach-panels/

and experiment with the livery.

I start by painting the coach with Humbrol 104 Oxford blue. I chose this colour because I have several old coaches painted this colour and don't fancy repainting them. To improve the matt finish of this I used Revell Lufthansa blue, which is the same colour with a satin finish.

And now for a slight diversion. I have this Trix brake van that I shall be working on soon. Before that I'd like to know if it is based on a real one, or a work of fiction. I haven't managed to find a match.

With its windows and 2 lamp hooks on the end, it kind of bears resemblance to an LMS 20T brake van, or at least a Trix interpretation of one.

That coach looks quite nice in that shade of blue; best of luck with the painting method!

It looks like it's supposed to be one of these:

http://www.burystandard4group.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/BR-Standard-Brake-Van-B950136.jpg

I'm not familiar with the Trix model, but it looks like it has been severely shortened to fit on a standard 9' or 10' wagon chassis, the prototype was a 16' wheelbase.

As a freelance model it will be fine, I would suggest adding some full length footboards to the chassis to disguise its wagon origins.

regards

Moxy

Hello again, thanks for your responses. The brake van does seem a bit freelance, so that's the way I'll go. The wagon chassis will definitely get a makeover. It has an 11'6" wb and looks the same as the one under the conflat wagon.

Back to the coach, I've been applying white paint.

Looking good so far, more to follow.

I've done a bit more on the coach. I painted the frames of the door windows brown, the handles gold, and the roof light grey. Then put it back together.

I'm quite pleased with it so far.

And now for some more scenic photos.

That's a Hornby GWR clerestory for comparison. In terms of the livery I seem to have recreated the Furness Railway.

More to do here, including transfers.

Yes we want a whole rake! Looks very attractive. Will you be weathering it?

Those Triang coaches are good for the flooding method as far as I remember, the panels being fairly deep. So a rake should take you no time at all :-) (easier said than done!).

I've been tinkering a bit more. I glued thin strips of styrene to the bogies for footboards. These old Triang bogies seem to be made from a MEK compatible plastic.

CA_08.jpg.21a566957069fb9c5620009a019c256b.jpg

I've added HMRS transfers. These are from the LTSR part of the sheet. The crest is close to what I imagine the LMWR design would be.

I also painted the vents above the doors white.

CA_09.jpg.beb2f9f95839b5ab443d515a802dc96c.jpg

Then I added a couple of letters to aid identification.

CA_10.jpg.76cf50150ff4191b1b6684227da9920c.jpg

And finally an in train shot.

CA_11.jpg.94ff5c3f75838a73dbf412a49a5ffb0b.jpg

The second coach is a ratio 4 wheeler that could do with some work now.

Thanks for your comments, I'll be doing more coaches later. Meanwhile here's a wagon.

I bought one of the new Hornby trout ballast wagons. This is how it comes.

WE_01.jpg.6be49014737fadcc23e6604a87435ca5.jpg

But where's the TROUT? This one also seems to be allocated to a specific traffic, I wanted a more general use wagon.

This is what I've done to the other side.

WE_02.jpg.2541515d6583ba7b0b195687df050a98.jpg

I also had to straighten two to the wheels as they were clearly wonky.

WE_03.jpg.b7e12d6ddf841e7087b65f1ca5f94fa9.jpg

All straight now and at right angles to the shaft they are on.

And now for the scenic shot.

WE_04.jpg.d6f94cda4d9f8b603380f2f091503b95.jpg

It'll be back to the pre-grouping era with the next model.

Onto the next loco. I bought one of the new Bachmann C class locos in SECR green. Here it is looking very nice in its 'simpler' livery.

GC_01.jpg.a4008971e1f2a079d70e9c7a1a449566.jpg

It didn't stay that way for long.

Oh no, what have I done!

GC_02.jpg.bc9f210b099a52a19beff042399e2cbf.jpg

What could I be up to? We shall see later.

Meanwhile I've been working on the chassis. I don't plan to chip this loco, so I'd rather be rid of the loco-tender wiring. I removed the unwanted wires and connected the motor direct to the pick-ups.

Motor removed.

GC_03.jpg.c2a3766c120f09e4b4752a446a0ec2d4.jpg

Rewired, with heat-shrink over the joints. I checked that it goes in the correct direction before shrinking the sleeves.

GC_04.jpg.67f9cc6104fe61ee49f254eb1622b63f.jpg

Back together, with no unwanted wires sticking out.

Now that's what I call a gorgeous livery!

great stuff,

Are you doing a second member in the 'improved C Class'?

Not yet, But I do plan to eventually. I have more of them in stock.

Here is a clue to where I am going with this one.

Sprayed with primer. The next colour will be Humbrol 64.
