An interesting day in Brisbane today. Last night at about 21.30, NGR722 damaged about 1200m of overhead between the west end of Roma Street and Central. It cane to a stop still half in the tunnel at Central with the overhead arcing onto the roof. Passengers were stranded on the train for nearly an hour before it was safe to exit. As a result, all trains were suspended between Bowen Hills and South Brisbane.

This morning the train had still not been moved. All Beenleigh and Gold Coast trains were running via the Tennyson loop, with Gold Coast trains stopping additionally at Moorooka. Cleveland trains were also running "express" from Roma Street to Buranda via Tennyson, but were actually stopping at Yeerongpilly. Plus all freight which would normally go via South Brisbane was also sent via Tennyson. This made for a very busy day around Sherwood.

Here is some footage I took out the window, first on a Gold Coast to Brisbane train and then on a Brisbane to Cleveland train. Excuse the dirty window and shaky phone. Rather than wait and go via the scenic route a third time I bailed out at Buranda and got a bus back to Altandi.

The disabled NGR was eventually hauled dead (by diesels) out of Central early afternoon. In addition to all this, a pair of diesels was running to Holmview tutoring drivers for the resumption of cattle trains.

Cheers

David

Was out and about in Sydney over the last few days and travelled a little around the suburbs on Sydney Trains.........

A trip on the Sydney Trains backwater which is the Clyde to Carlingford line sees an ageing S-set waiting to depart Clyde for Carlingford. The line is likely to be converted at some stage in the future to light rail and the last of the S-sets are in the process of replacement.

For 20 years the Victorian C class were synonymous with freight operations on the Melbourne to Adelaide interstate corridor. Made redundant in 1997 they were placed in storage for several years before being picked up by a private operator, and most of the class of 10 were refurbished and upgraded. While there have been occasional appearances on their old stomping ground, most noticeably of un-refurbished C501, these appearances were sporadic and usually limited to single units. So n one of the most amazing motive power comebacks, after a twenty year absence from the corridor in any significant numbers four were lashed up last week to haul a train carrying feed grain from Tailem Bend in South Australia to drought affected areas of New South Wales - 30 October 2018.

“It is not known how fast the train was travelling at the time of derailment although if the statement is accurate it would have been travelling close to 200km per hour.”

I’d like to see that!

I finished up my job with the Public Transport Authority of WA this week.

As a parting gift to myself, I called in a favour and was able to get a cab pass, so had the best seat in the house for my penultimate ride to work.

The fully automated (driverless) Sydney Metro North West opened a couple of weeks ago - I managed a quick ride on it last week......

Sydney saw the opening of the A$ 8.3bn Sydney Metro North West rail link between Tallawong and Chatswood on 26 May, with around 140,000 people experiencing free travel for the day on the new service. Much of the newly constructed 23km rail line between Tallawong and Epping is underground with 15.5km in twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping, and 4.4km on a continuous elevated viaduct between Kellyville and Rouse Hill.  At Epping the new line has been extended to include the former Sydney Trains 13km Epping to Chatswood rail line which has been converted for driverless metro operations.  This is the first automated passenger operation in Australia to use driverless trains, and the thirteen stations on the line are also the first in Australia to be equipped with platform screen doors.

This video is a gem. A CPH railmotor on the old abattoirs line in western Sydney. You can still ride this line today as it forms part of the Sydney Olympic Line. This video was done before the H&S zealots outlawed having fun.

Queen's first electric train EMU01 will make its last revenue run this weekend. QR have taken the unusual step of advertising which services it will operate on Saturday, then on Sunday it will make special runs to Ferny Grove and Darra (re-enacting the first run on 4 September 1979) then a special run to the Gold Coast and return. Anybody can travel on these at the regular fare.

EMU01 will be retained as an operational unit by QR Heritage.

Some interesting proposed/notional extensions to Sydney Metro. The current extent is the M1 from Chatswood to Tallawong, with the extension to Bankstown due to be completed in 2024.

I would imagine that M2 would have some sort of limited stop service to connect the two airports with Central and Parramatta.

Cheers

Was in the city a couple of weeks ago during the week while they were doing trials. Saw four  near misses down George Street where people head down intently  looking at their phones walked straight into the path of an oncoming train...

No such thing as "H&S Zealots".  There are dead and injured people; and insurance companies.

You can thank those two groups for WHS reforms.

Great stuff here, thanks.

Someone, somewhere, mentioned the Bethungra Loop.

I'm not sure that I can get photos of it in 1:1 scale, but I can in 1:160 scale. I just need to wait for the Old School House cafe to open.

I wasn't aware of Bethungra's real history until recently.  It's a place where a kid I went to school with in Sydney in 1973, was born; and my sister met her first husband at the Shirley.  The Shirley is still there and remains as the last of the nine hotels that used to be in a town that once had a population of around 3000.   Even by today's standards, it was a big town.   The Shirley is no longer a licenced hotel and is facing a dim future.

They were all there to build the main southern line, north and south, from Bethungra.  There is no station platform there any more, although a there is a station building that is now a residence.

Further to the south (12km) on the Olympic Highway to Junee, is the little town of Illabo.

Some where in between, there are plans to branch the main southern line northwards and on all the way to Toowoomba in Queensland as the inland rail project.

Meanwhile.. I was at the crossing at Cootamundra West today as the 'Elvis Train' went through on its way to Parkes for the annual Elvis thang.

No, I didnt get any happy snaps :/

I couldn't get inside before I left, but will try next time I'm there.

There's an N-scale model of the Bethungra Loop at the tea house.

The Great Southern heading out of Brisbane today. This is a new weekly seasonal land cruise from Adelaide to Brisbane, using (mostly) the spare Ghan set not used during the wet season.
