Hornby KFA

OO scale

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Hornby+kfa&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=LsgYU7elMqmM7AaRk4HwCA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAA&biw=1024&bih=600

1980s - present day

A very useful model from Hornby, the flat wagon comes loaded with a 40ft dry box and either a 20ft dry box or tank-tainer. A large variety of container liveries are now available for these however the square ribbed style of the boxes is more suitable to older boxes than the modern corrugated designs.

Bachmann FIA pair

OO scale

http://www.google.co.uk/search?biw=1024&bih=84&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=RcsYU7KlJOrG7Aab44GICQ&q=Bachmann+intermodal&oq=Bachmann+intermodal&gs_l=img.12..0i24l2.11666.17708.0.18971.15.9.0.5.5.0.329.1455.0j5j2j1.8.0....0...1c.1.37.img..2.13.1572.WPcotPoYeoU

Originally built for international services through the channel tunnel, now also used on domestic services. The model comes loaded with either 45' or 2x 20' boxes on each wagon, with all boxes being a scale 8'9" high. This is ok for some of the 45s but a little too high for the 20s, however on their own it's not very noticable.

Genesis Kits KAA

OO scale white metal kit

I once found an O scale model of these too but can't locate it at the moment.

Originally built to carry cement trailers for the construction of Heathrow's terminal 5, after that they were used for standard containers. I believe these wagons have now moved over to the continent.

http://www.tl-modellbau.de/en/TL-Decals-1-87/Container-Decals-1-87/

TL Decal is a German manufacturer that has a nice range of HO scale container decals, some good ones here for North American or European HO modellers, and for schemes where a OO equivalent isn't available (check the C-Rail range first) they don't look too bad used on OO!

So glad to see some MSC decals on that site, Martyn.

The growth of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) has been explosive in the NYNJPort Authority area.

Btw it's been great to see the interest in Intermodal Operations - this section has been a long time overdue......

Best, Pete.

http://www.microscale.com/ also do a large number of intermodally relevant decals aimed at US HO, N and O, modellers, some of their older sets cover some 70s/80s container operators so might also be useful for period BR modellers?

Examples (these are all HO sets):

OO scale

Mostly military orientated, however they produce an expanding range of 3D printed containers. MoD containers, domestic rubbish flow boxes, and Gypsum boxes are already available and work is in progress on ribbed 20ft and 40ft containers with flat data panels at the ends.

Hi All,

I recently ran a rake of weathered Hornby KFA's (along with some other container traffic).

Up front was a Bachmann class 47 in the original Railfreight Distribution livery.

I thought I would share here.

Enjoy.

Many years ago, Dapol released a raft of 20' and 40' containers in a twin pack.

The packs were numbered B775 for 40' and B776' for 20' and B780 for the 40' High Cubes.

All sorts of liveries but you took pot luck in what you received in the pack as they were 'assorted'...

China Shipping

Italia

Cosco

Hanjin

MSC
Triton

Evergreen

Tiphook (Brown)

Genstar

UASC

There weer also quite a few Stobart containers released as B857A-??

Some pictures of the assortment I have...

I think i ended up with a dozen of those Stobart containers, all individually numbered. I suspect they're bit too modern and the wrong area for where and when i model, but rule 1 and all that!

  • 7 months later...

Readers of this part of the forum will know that I've been scratchbuilding some 7mm scale containers from the early 1960s recently. I have plans to do some more.

But I'm wondering if there are any suitable RTP or kit products out there that could populate my container stack a bit more quickly?

I'm really struggling to find anything suitable! Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm looking for containers in 7mm:ft or 1:43. Not 1:50, 1:48 or 1:45. They may look OK but put them next to a 7mm scale one and they're obviously the wrong size!

Ideally I'm looking for early ISO containers suitable for the late 1960s or early 1970s period. Predominantly 20'x8'x8' boxes, ribbed or flush sided, or more exotic types.

Are there any available?

I'm aware of the Buzz Models range which I think are the right scale, but of more modern corrugated-sde containers.

I could tolerate 20'x8'x8'6" high though it would not be my first preference. This one I think is 8'6" and seems to be generally available from Eastern Europe and Russia, often on the back of a truck. Postage costs and import duties may make them an expensive option but they look quite good and of a suitable earlier ribbed style:

Any links or ideas welcome!

Cheers,

Mol

Very interesting, thanks. I had no idea Transfesa made wagons for Interfrigo! I wonder what and where the latter wagons were used for?

They'd have been in a pool with other Interfrigo vans, so everything from fresh fruit to offal.
