Spitfire's Workbench - On3 Obsession

Recommended Posts

The other day I received the second order of 3D printed parts, which included the boiler.

post-21863-0-59099600-1536489318_thumb.jpg

And the steel parts too.

So I began where any good loco build does, the tender.

Just curious

Is this also gauge 3?

Were the chimney and dome part of a single printing?

Yes this is Gauge 3. While American large scale has universally moved to F scale, I like working in G3 and wanted to maintain compatability between my stock. I also like the historical significance of the scale and allows me to use commercially available components.

The boiler is actually 6 major parts, firebox, boiler, smokebox, chimney, steam dome, and sand dome.

It all connects via interference fits and positive locating points.

That makes more production sense

What do you mean I havent updated this thread in 2 months?

Progress on the American has regretably been slow. Id like to have the drivers before I get the locomotive more together, and thats where the delay lies.

But I had gotten the pilot together and the cab laminated from lasercut parts.

I also planned and am building a G3 boxcar.

Wow, another update in less than a month? Must be early Christmas!

So recently Ive been splitting my main modelling time between the G3 boxcar and the rc tugboat.

On the railroad front, Ive framed, sheathed, and hung doors on the car.

post-21863-0-49186300-1543796261_thumb.jpgpost-21863-0-35581100-1543796272_thumb.jpg

And what will become a functional brake has been added.

post-21863-0-36640400-1543796483_thumb.jpg

Ive also dipped my toes in the black art of recasting.

From some 2.5" gauge trucks I bought, I needed a new journal cover as one was missing.

So I bought some polymer clay and made a simple 2 part mould. post-21863-0-16796900-1543796717_thumb.jpg

And I then had the chance to try making some whitemetal castings with VERY rudementary tools. A tincan on the stove for a meltpot and a stick as a skimmer.

post-21863-0-72994100-1543796300_thumb.jpg

But I managed some decent results and a few castings before the mould broke apart.

Im pleased to say the least.

And on the tugboat.

I received the RC parts, decided to swap out the esc and motor, decide to change the esc again, and install the lot in a relatively tight hull.

post-21863-0-37204800-1543796362_thumb.jpg

But then the cabin was planked.

post-21863-0-56318400-1543796324_thumb.jpg

And details fitted.

post-21863-0-13537500-1543796345_thumb.jpg

And me being me, Ive decided to fit functional navigation lights on the limited areas available. All controlled individually via switches in the cabin.

post-21863-0-84761600-1543796372_thumb.jpg

All thats needed now is a tow light and possibly an anchor light if I feel like it for display purposes.

I could also control a headlamp via ch5 on my transmitter.

The boat was also given its first water test last week, at which point I discovered the esc wasnt powerful enough at full throttle.

The struggles of a joggled driveshafe and slightly tight stuffing box.

At least the rudder works well and it actually floats relatively level. For something I put together from mostly scraps of wood, Im pleasantly surprised.

As ever excelent modeling. I am suprised you had not resorted to casting earlier.

Richard

I still dont intend to move to casting for major works.  Much prefer the fiddling around with wood and styrene.

But for the rare instance it may prove to be useful.

Well to try posting here, my first notice is the quite low upload limit. Can only insert 2 or so pictures....not sure how thats reasonable for a forum so dedicated to photos...

But Ive been doing good work.

The American is coming along.

20190203_161739-1.jpg.392d855fc542bf352b5c1232ae8ac6aa.jpg

And I finished up that tugboat, or as done as Im going to make it.

Now I just need to figure out how to post more damn photos as it wont let me upload any more.

With the last few details of the boxcar being added the past weeks, its finally time for paint.

1226389384_2019-02-1318_48_47.jpg.4419c50f027e444af5230c5bc57f94d5.jpg

It took 1/2oz of paint to cover sufficiently. Two entire jars of Testors paint!

I had to brushpaint it as I didnt want to airbrush it and "paint the town red", which actually is one of the theorized origins to the phrase since oxide red was the default paint colour in the US for quite a while.

I really need to finish one build before starting or continuing another.

Well...

Ive been a busy enby.

20230615_164322.jpg.835fdac918e038c3b45d7125180ee95f.jpg

So Ive aquired two brass KTM 13T shays.

One in original condition and the other remotored by a previous owner.

Well I didnt like their remotor attempt, so Im doing my own.

20230624_172325.jpg.e67162c7edd7bba2e946d3690501b7e3.jpg20230624_194917.jpg.4dbd9d1bbd8771cd877677135224d314.jpg

Then I decided I didnt like the footplate, so I removed that too. With a new wood frame, deck, and superstructure, its looking very different.20230705_204340.jpg.f843c0454cfe61493969014388cb5baa.jpg

My story for this engine is a boiler explosion destroyed the original superstructure. Not wanting to be down an engine, the logging shop used what was at hand to repair her.  Boiler from a broken donkey and a spare water tank.

The other shay is also getting a makeover and remotoring but thatll be much more original. Simply a new wood burner stack, a wood bunker, and some minor details.

Phoenix now has a new Soundtraxx 1100, as well as a crew and her name, painted on a bit of scrap salvaged from the wreck.

Still want to do a bit more detailing on her. 20230802_200611.jpg.04e5b02f0ad89dc6c0bf7f12c63a6018.jpg20230802_200738.jpg.05d0c01f3d4510cfeba6b1de25347afa.jpg20230802_200750.jpg.fbc3ac05c0908ef63739ae5d9fd0ccd8.jpg20230802_200636.jpg.273070ff25edb2b83ce35d7e3c4f798c.jpg20230802_200728.jpg.9609323010e9d0012edede6eaad26a3e.jpg

Wood body is weathered with stains and paint, metal and roof are all weathering powders..
