Twright's 4mm CAD workbench - Series 2 Land Rover

Recommended Posts

While talking to Zane (69843) about cars, we got onto the topic of Land Rovers and in particular the series 2 that was adapted with rail wheels and pictured 'hauling' (if that's the right terminology) a train of other series 2s. This got us thinking and as I didn't have as many projects lined up, I decided to draw it up. To start with, it will just be the basic design (as the Oxford Die-cast is for a series 1 so I'm not duplicating I don't think) but a propulsion system will be designed and a ro-rail version will be made. This is the start, not long having been spent on it so far (a series 2 109'' wheelbase version):

  • 2 weeks later...

Have you considered how the chassis is to be attached to the body?

The usual approach is to have horizontal spacers at each end of the chassis through which cheesehead BA screws pass into the body.

Fire box sides that show below the frames?

Keep up the good work.

Re: the 16xx chassis design - are P4 modellers at liberty to remove the spacers and substitute their own, or would you consider drawing a variant with wider spacers (for an overall width of about 16mm)?

The spacers the moment are left over from when it was still attached to the body, a different style will be made that can be slotted in to give chassis widths for OO, EM and P4, keeping the same sides for all.

Thanks

At the moment there are are just locators on the buffer beams as I haven't thought about the attaching of the chassis yet having only just separated them. I will probably have horizontal spacers to for the fixing and I will be extending the firebox sides down through the frames, for support and for locating.

  • 1 month later...

Various things have meant I haven't been able to get any work done on these however after writing a list (and subsequently finding more things to put on it after completing most of them), I started crossing some off:

·         Holes for other handrails

·         Gearbox and mount

·         Lamp irons (on mine to see what they look like in real life)

·         Shed plate

·         Tank lifting rings

·         Coupling provision

·         Buffer steps

·         Cab Rain strip

·         Holes for bunker brackets

·         Whistles and shield (on mine to see what they look like in real life)

·         Hole on cab roof

·         Coupling hooks

·         Side cab windows

·         Locating method

·         Sorting thin walls

·         Number plate location

Is there anything I have not done and missed of the list or that you would like to see included in the model? (I can't guarantee that it will be included, it might be beyond my sketch-up ability)

And here are some screen shots:

The access hatch on the top has been added with the option of modelling it open or closed.

I have put lamp irons on mine to see how they look when printed. The other brackets on the bunker will be done with wire (the same as the Bachmann 8750) You can also see a hole in the bottom of the bunker which is there to accept a Meccano bolt and nut which will hold the chassis in. The other end has 2 tabs on the buffer beam which slot in the chassis (below)

The shed plate has been added as well, this is an approximation as my plans don't show it.

Assuming I can find time to finish the list, It will be ordered along with the other completed items fairly soon.

Superb work Tom, looks like you've been extremely thorough  Here's a couple of thoughts -

- maybe some kind of marking for lining up the cabside numbers correctly?

- sandbox pull rods and sandbox lids

Thanks

I will look at doing the marking for the numbers

I have put the sandbox lids on but wasn't sure about the pull rods as they might be too fine - I will look at it..

Aye I was thinking that, I've used the RT Etches before and they are quite delicate.  Looking great Tom, can't wait to see it printed!  Might be a bit late now but I'll be at the KESR at some point soon if you need any reference photos of 1638.

Cheers

Tom,

How about a pair of firing shovels, pricker, scraper and bailing shovel, a couple of buckets and a couple of shunters poles as a pack of detailing bits?

I'll have a go this evening at some but some may be easier/more realistic in wire (due to limitations in printing)

Fan-bloody-tastic. I'm particularly looking forward to the gearbox being available separately.
