Wow, amazing, what a wonderful archive.

The shots of Everchreech North box are brilliant. On none of my negs could you count the timbers across the walkway so your photo is so helpful. Also the shot of the front of the box is about the clearest showing the quions on the locking room window, which were different on each side.

Thanks so much for sharing these wonderfull images with us all.

best wishes

Duncan

Lovely and some last day photos too. Brill. Thanks again.

Saturday 5th March 1966 dawned cold and frosty I seem to remember (it was fine and chilly day all through as well) and my friend and I had a cold trip on the 0742 train north from Bailey Gate to Templecombe (pulled by 80138). First thing which excited us was on getting off the train at Templecomble at 0837 was seeing a Warship diesel (I know but D800 Sir Brian Robertson was a cop!!!!! - sad isn't it). At Templecombe Upper we saw a number of western DMUs through the day. 48760 pulled in from Bath and then departed again with a passenger train sometime later. Saw 48706 go under Templecombe Lower Bridge in a plume of distant smoke as well as 34006 and 34057. Down at Templecombe Depot we were allowed to wander in, as were many others, and I retain a vivid memory of 75072 and 75073 dead and steamless and getting rusty with the conncting rods unceremoniously shoved in their respective cabs and firebox doors. I believe they were towed down to Ringwood for scrapping during the following week or so. The S&DHT magazine of August 2011 (No 38) had a photo of them stopped at Blandford post-closure. Cannot remember much more apart from loads of people with cameras. I only had a Brownie 127 in those days and took no photos. Took some the following day (Sunday at Bailey Gate including 48706 and 35028 but have not seen them for years, cannot find them and believe them lost. They were not any good anyway but would have posted them just for the historical value.) Most of the village of Sturminster Marshall turned out to see the last train at the station (22-10 dep) in the evening hauled by 80138 and strengthened to 6 coaches. My friend and I travelled back home earlier in the evening under parental orders (back at Bailey Gate 1733).  This was my only trip north of Bailey Gate (aged nearly 13 so a brave decision by parents to let us go). We would have liked to go on to Bath and return but the connections on the Emergency Timetable were such that we would have got into Bath around 1540 with a run back at 1625 but to arrive home at Bailey Gate on that last train at 2210. Not surprisingly both sets of parents would not allow us. My friend has wriiten up this trip in the SDRT Pines Express a few years back but despite searching through past copies cannot as yet locate it. We did plenty of trips Bailey Gate to Bornemouth Central though late 1965/1966. Some photos done of those trips but again these seem lost - too many moves as a adult I suppose. Sorry to have bored you all with the above but the photos have released a rush of nostalgia. Thanks again.

Just caught up with this. What a fantastic set of photos, thanks very much for sharing them with us. It is great to see some new pictures not the same old ones rehashed in various publications. I guess we all wish we were around with cameras at the ready and realised then how soon it would all disappear. I travelled the line from Templecombe to Bath to see my brother several times but was only 10 at the time and just saw it as a means of getting from A to B. Ah the wisdom of hindsight!

Even more super shots.

Your “visit 1”:

Scan 24.  A double headed branch passenger  train.  Surely a big rarity, apart from specials?

Scan 25.  The other 2-6-2 looks very much like 41249 when enlarged and did appear on some of your other pics.

Scan 30.  The taller of the two men on the platform was Vic Freak.

Your “Nearly the end”:

Scan 35.  Memories of my last S&D trip.  I could be on that shot in the crowd at Glastonbury!

All your shots seem very sharp.  You must have had a good camera.

Thanks again.

Tim.

I've just stumbled across this thread quite by accident. Such beautiful photographs: thank you so much for uploading them Dave. They really are something quite special.

I've always liked the old S&D: such a shame it was destroyed.

Kind regards,

Nick.
