A dog's eye view of 50013 Agincourt as she waits for the RA at Oxford with one of the hourly Paddington expresses, booked to stop only at Reading. No date sadly but it must have been around 1984ish. Just after taking this photo I was very surprised to see a pair of 20s approaching from the south on empty cartics. I legged it across to the down platform (in those days I could do such things without risking a heart attack) and managed to get a shot as they stopped for a couple of minutes at the north end of the down through road. I'll post said picture in the Class 20 thread when I've tidied it up a bit.

A particularly poignant photo for me that!

At around that time, number 13 was my best mates fave 50. We spent a couple of years bashing the class around the western on Saturdays (usually out of Reading) after leaving school in 83.

I think 85 was our last year though as he went away to join the army and was posted in Belize after some training. After just a few months though, he was killed in an accident in Belize.

Seems like a whole lifetime in the past now though.

Many thanks for posting that Gary. 1983 was about the time I started going out and about on the trains from Reading so our paths may have crossed somewhere. Agincourt was one of my favourite 50s too (something to do with the slightly exotic name, perhaps). I really wish I had a picture of her at Reading but, alas, I don't. But here is my only other reasonable shot of her, taken at Bristol at around the same time. I post it as a tribute to your friend from all those years ago.

I too did a fair bit of 50 bashing from Reading around the same time. Stopped doing it regularly when they were painted in NSE livery and went after NB locos instead. I always knew 50013 as a terrible performer and it was known by us as "ageing crate". This was when it was refurbished but still all-over BR blue.

Although I saw all the class at Crewe c1972-73 with D numbers, it wasn't until a few years later that I got a camera (of sorts).

So here are the results from the old Instamatic...plumbing new photographic depths for even me...

Good stuff, Billy!

The pics we take that maybe didn't seem that great at the time, are just as good as the technically better ones today in my view!

Thanks Gary - yes they have a certain charm regarding the faded colours and format, and that they record a certain place and time, which is priceless!

I must admit though that I never fail to impress myself with my natural flair for composition that plonks everything to the left....

I never did manage to compensate for the fact that the instamatics' viewfinder was offset in relation to the lens.

50037 Illustrious Crewe 22 September 1979

That's 50008 Thunderer at Crewe, not Illustrious. It worked in on the F&W Crewe Invader from Plymouth for a Crewe Works Open Day, hence so many spotters on the platforms. http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/70s/790922fw.htm

Ooops, sorry Brushman - 50037 was what was written on the back of the pic - I guess my note taking was even worse than my camera skills. :sorry:

You're right, it was a works open day...

I spent a huge amount of time spotting and bashing on the western especially the  Reading station area 1982-1984.

So I guess we must have all seen each other at somepoint. Little did we know that one day we would be talking on some fantastic futuristic instant communication machine yet to be invented!

That Photo of 50022 looks like the afternoon 15.xx (?) Paddington - Oxford(?) stopper/semi fast that was diagrammed for a Class 50 and stock with Mk1s and a GUV leading. Sorry so vague but remember the working well.

Thought I had posted this one previously, but a quick scan back through the thread seems to say 'not', so here goes: 'Victorious' at a sunny Salisbury on an Exeter-bound service, sometime in mid '83/'84(ish...)

at Wigan Wallgate.

Tom

Wonderful pictures of the Class 50's on their original stamping grounds. They looked much better then, than they later did 'tarted' up by the Western Region.

More pictures of The Class 50's please on the WCML.
