When in good fettle they just flew down the Thames Valley on the Oxfords and Newburys. Even better though were the Summer Saturday relief jobs down the B&H as far as Exeter, a quick trip to the chippie down the road then back up to London with another as fast as we could, within reason. Sigh.... 7

They sound like very good times, sometimes I wish I was a bit older so I could have appreciated them more at their peak as with some other locos as well,I’m guessing ‘not be frit of it’ means not to be scared of it? Sigh.... When they went well, they certainly did. As a first-year apprentice at Swindon, travel back was Sunday evening, and there was a 50 hauled service around 8-ish IIRC. One evening we were barreling along between Didcot and Swindon when suddenly the anchors went on full. Didn't find out why, but Mk2Ds under full brake pulled up pretty swiftly and are quite noisey compared to disc braked stock. This would be 1980-81.

The building behind was the lost property store. I have never seen so many umbrellas until I went in that place. Then there was everything from scarves to mopeds. Apparently if it wasn't claimed within a certain time, it was auctioned off.
RMweb Premium Welly Posted December 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 18, 2019 I have just watched this cab video of 50049 and 50007 going up Lickey from Stoke Works Junction to Blackwell back in August this year. Good noise!

Steadfast
Earlier this week a pair of 50s went to Laira, taking three redundant Caledonian Sleeper Mk3s from Wembley. The light was dire but I managed to get some shots, linked here from my Flickr. 50007 + 50049 5Z50 Keynsham Pixash Lane (1) by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr 50007 + 50049 5Z50 Keynsham Pixash Lane (2) by Steadfast Fotography, on Flickr Not my favourite livery on a 50 I must admit (or anything really) but it must be said the GB 50s are smartly turned out, a credit to Eastleigh works. The weather was naff and I'm working nights. Dead certain for an interesting working then! Staying local to home, a quick shot before dinner and work of 5Z50 from Wembley to Laira at Pixash Lane, Keynsham. Sounding excellent as the driver opened up approaching the bridge, 50007 'Hercules' (though masquerading as 50014 'Warspite' on this side) was leading a trio of former Caledonian Sleeper Mk3 carriages with 50049 'Defiance' on the rear. The carriages have been obtained to supplement the GWR Night Riviera operation, presumably by donating parts for spares. Jo

RusselBridge2017
On the way home from a job interview at Asda and part of my days excercise caught this travelling from Laira to Long Marsden today. Having seen these loco on the Western Region in the 1970s I have to say this livery is the best ever.... Just my opinion.
