Popular Post Rivercider
Having had a hunt through my photos here are 50008 and 50015 (50005 remains illusive). Descending Wellington bank at Beam Bridge is 50008 Thunderer 17/8/85. 50015 Valiant is seen at Cogload Junction with the 1720 Bristol Temple Meads to Taunton service, 25/5/85 And a few years earlier 50015 Valiant approaching Aller Junction, 9/7/83, cheers
Popular Post Rivercider
Here are photos of 50032 and 50036, and to show I sometimes went further north than Birmingham one of 50049 at York. On 9 July 1983 I went to Newton Abbot and Dawlish to see the summer Saturday action. That day I recorded 17 members of the class (including 50005 Collingwood) and photographed 13 of them, (but not 50005 Collingwood!). 50032 Courageous is passing Aller Junction with a service for Paignton. 9/7/83. 50036 Victorious passes Dawlish 11/8/84. On a visit to York I saw the Doncaster Works test train. A DMU formation headed by 53644 is passed by the last class 50, 50049 Defiance heads south from York with the Doncaster Works test train. 10/6/83, cheers Edited January 13, 2021 by Rivercider removed image
D826
So, here's a question. I think the Milks from Dolcoath, St Erth, Loswithiel, Totnes, Torrington stopped in 1979 - 1980 ? So is it fair to say that it was never hauled by a refurb 50 ? Any of the sages on here know ? Best regards Matt W Edited January 14, 2021 by D826

Best regards Matt W So here’s an answer. The last milk train out of St.Erth ran on March 31st 1980 and was hauled by 50017 Royal Oak. Although it had been refurbished, it was still in BR blue and hadn’t yet had its headlight fitted. D826
Thank you A Sage aka Western Aviator. I think Kevin (Rivercider's) image of 50 019 Ramilles, shows just how smart and classy they looked in Rail blue when clean. I thought large logo was gaudy when it came along, so you can imagine my apoplectic reaction to some post privatisation liveries. Was the milk from St Erth the last one from Cornwall ? Cheers Matt W Edited January 14, 2021 by D826
Popular Post Halvarras
In my last post, which seems to have put a rocket booster under this thread (yay - nice going Kevin/Rivercider!), I mentioned a photo I took of D404 at Crewe on a dull and dismal 3/11/69 - yer tiz! I think that was D440 behind. The trusty Instamatic struggled a bit in such conditions....... Different camera, still not a great result but worth showing (I hope) because this livery variation was unusual. 50028, seen here ready to leave Truro eastbound on 6/9/74, was one of only two which lost their BR logos only on the driver's corners when renumbered to TOPS. The other was 50003. Not the sharpest pic (again) but I had to include this one for two reasons - firstly the subject is now a permanent resident of Cornwall, less than 10 miles away from this spot; and secondly since nearly a year ago I now live within 15 minutes' walk of this path and I can assure you it doesn't look ANYTHING like this nowadays - trees, bushes, and more trees. When I walked this path last July I barely made it through to the station end as I swear the brambles were out to get me! 50042 departs Par on 27/8/74..... Finally for now, those two shots I mentioned of Class 50s on the Falmouth branch, working the famous 0910 Falmouth - Paddington service - first up 50002 approaching Penwithers Junction on 26/6/76 (look, I'm sorry to have to say this on a Class 50 thread but I was gutted it wasn't a Western!)........ .....and exactly a year less a day later me ol' mucker 50004 - the same loco as the pic at the top - crossing Carnon Viaduct shortly after leaving Perranwell on 25/6/77 - if somebody had told me at Crewe in 1969 that I'd be taking a photo of the same loco on the Falmouth branch within 8 years I'd have thought they were nuts! Note the change to air conditioned stock.......and no chance at all of a Western!
Rivercider
While having a sort out I found some photos taken by my late brother Steve Redwood. He did not take notes, but from other photos on the film I know this is either 28th August 1978 or more likely 25th August 1979. I have asked the question elsewhere, can anyone identify this class 50 arriving at Plymouth. SJR 28/8/78 or 25/8/79 cheers
RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted January 18, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 18, 2021 On first inspection I thought it was 50018 Resolution but after a bit more comparison with other photos taken at the time I’m fairly sure it’s 50038 Formidable. I’m basing this on the nameplate lettering “pattern” and the right hand white dot on the headcode panel is slightly higher than the one on the left. 1

From my own notes I see we went to the Plymouth Navy Days 3 years in a row. Each time I noted a 50 at Plymouth before we set off home. It could not be 1977 as no 50s were named then, so was either 1978 or 1979. I noted 50038 at Plymouth before we set off home in 1979. I posted on the Devon Diesels fb group and they came to the same conclusion, so it was probably taken on 25/8/79. cheers

Nice going, I think you've probably just won any contest to photograph 50042 nearest the BWR without it actually being on the BWR! Unless somebody photted it on an up train at Bodmin Parkway, but that would be splitting hairs!! RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted February 14, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) That first shot today has got some interesting details, Nidge. There’s a short rake of coaches in the old platform 7 bay which was unusual. I seem to recall you could get a 6 car DMU in there with all doors on the platform so by the look of it there can only be five coaches there, or four if there’s a loco on the blocks. Also, the class 33 (or is it two?) on the down goods is fairly unusual. Presumably snow disruption is to blame. And there’s quite a bit of scaffolding around the panel box. I’m not sure why that would be and very few of the chaps that worked in there 40 years ago will still be around now to ask. Good to see the snow hasn’t put off a decent number of spotters from turning out. Edited February 14, 2021 by Western Aviator 1
Rugd1022
I hadn't noticed those background details when I posted it, all I saw was the 50 and the snow! This is one of Anthony Middleton's shots from his native Coventry, he later became a driver at Old Oak and drives some of the heritage stuff on the mainline, including the 50s and D1015 'Western Champion', this is 50 008 passing Memorial Park on the outskirts of Coventry in 1987.... Popular Post Halvarras
Finally got around to posting a few more mid-to-late 70s Class 50 images of dubious quality! But hopefully of some interest...... First up here's 50022 near Tresillian on a blazing hot 24/6/76, heading the down 'Cornish Riviera Express' - next stop Truro. Sorry, but once again I had hoped for a Western! I never took many photos east of Truro as the topography was awkward compared to that to the west....... Next up here's 50024 piloting 45031 on an up train between Chacewater and Truro (having consulted an OS map I've labelled it Saveock) on 25/6/77. This is probably 1M74, a train very often double-headed by all manner of Type 4 power - just over two years earlier I'd captured D1056 piloting D1036 at this same spot.....but of course the pic below was dated post-26/2/77, so....... 50017 on final approach to Penzance on a misty 24/06/77 - still in its original livery (I won't say 'original paint finish' because Strathwood's 'Looking Back at English Electric Locomotives' has a photo of 436 apparently overhauled and repainted as per original livery in 1972)........ On the same day 50035 has arrived 'on the blocks' at journey's end - note the 'proper' headlights in the roof box, 50003 was also so equipped....... 50034 (my last required '50' copped 22/5/76 from Langstone Rock.......the cheering could probably be heard in Dawlish!) at Reading on 28/10/77, also still in original livery. It was still like this on 11/2/78, so here's a question - 50017 and 50034 were named Royal Oak and Furious respectively 4/78, '17 still had its 4 logos - did '34 as well? Class 50 oddities did seem to come in pairs...... Here's an unusual sight, also at Reading on 29/3/78 - 50008 prepared for naming Thunderer. It must have had to wait a while, judging by the dirt........ And finally, another weirdo. Some named Class 50s displayed evidence of their central(ish) large BR logos being painted out prior to naming and new smaller ones being applied to the secondman's cabsides. However 50020 Revenge and 50046 Ajax were named with their big logos unmoved by the experience! See what I mean - two again! '46 also at Reading (I was there a lot) on a dull 23/12/78 had just expired when I took this photo!! Edited March 7, 2021 by Neil Phillips Added names (as if any self-respecting Class 50 fan really needed me to!) and cabside logo clarification

RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted June 7, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 7, 2021 It certainly has more than a resemblance to departmental grey livery. I think it looks very smart. I like the fact the 50s are being painted in 'modern' liveries (such as GBRf)... they are still relevant working machines, not just museum pieces. 1
