I used to try and book all the 'Merrymaker' trips from Atherton Central or Daisy Hill stations, always guaranteed you'd get some weird and wonderful diesel haulage and we always had a choice of where to get off, on the Bristol trip we could have carried on to Bath behind a 33, and on that same trip we had double headed 25's all the way from Birmingham. On a Scottish trip (Out & back behind 40019) we could choose Ayr or Dunoon. Another trips choices were Margate or Ramsgate. They were very cheep days out and a real bargain for the distances travelled. We'll never see those days again DerekEm8!

Hmmm!  Ayr (1 loco depot, large freight yard etc), or Dunoon (totally boring town with no railway connection whatsoever) tough call!!

Near Frome in 1984, possibly 50016 on close examination of the scan, but more interestingly, towing the generator coach 975325, some HST trailers, and another coach at the far end.

attachicon.gif84-12-9 Frome.jpg

The hot summer of 1983 marked the start of Paxman engine problems, which went on for some time. West of England sets also suffered with motor problems too, so seeing a 50 on the 'gen set' in 1984 is not surprising. It would have been used on WoE services due to the lower line speeds compared to Bristol and Wales runs.

Marsden's HST Silver Jubilee tells the story of the power car woes and hence the use of the gen set.

Yes, there's a thread on here with some discussion of the generator van, with more pics including some of mine from 1986:

A few more recent finds, i have plenty more pics' it's a case having the time and energy to sort 'em all out! This was my first ever time behind a cl.50 and it was a trip from Axminster to Exeter St. Davids for a days spotting. I got behind 50 007 on the return journey but sadly no pics' of it as my film had run out!.

On board & Behind 50 008 passing through Exeter Central on 8th July 1980. Shunter is 08 937. 'Thunderer' is and always will be my fave' cl.50 for some reason! Will try post more when i can. :locomotive:

Owd Bob,   Like you for some obscure reason I chose 008 as my favourite 50 too  :)   though 50039 was the first Hoover that I had for haulage!

Great stuff! P.C.M. When did they change that Toothpaste livery to go straight along instead of or turning up and under the cab windows? I never noticed that before, mind you i seldom ventured down to their stomping grounds during their last ten years or so.

Thanks. I am not sure but most of the original livery 50s were repainted before being withdrawn. 50026 still kept it's old livery to the end though.

Cheers Peter.

When they realised that white around the cab windows didn't work, and that the blue needed to be a bit darker to allow for fading.

The upsweeps were dropped to give a uniform continuous look.

Anyway, why was it 'toothpaste' rather than 'Aquafresh' ? After all, the orange version was 'Jaffa Cake' and not 'chocolate covered orange biscuity thing' !

An unidentified Class 50 catches the late afternoon sun on an up NSE working, west of Wilton, 19/10/86.

attachicon.gifclass 50 W of Salisbury.jpg

Looking closely at the front, one of handrails above the tail lights is out of alignment (left hand on the photo). Only 50006 had this arrangement, and it also had a dark roof at this time, so your uid 50 is 'Neptune'.
