50008 has had a new coat of paint and been on a test run today

Yep, to Salisbury dragging a 67, turned via Laverstock and the 67 brought it into the station and Thunderer led back to Eastleigh

I'm not a fan of the owners names being under the number - it didn't look good on the last livery - a bit too cluttered.

But, as others have said, its nice to see it in a modern livery (I think its nicer than the GBRF livery on 007 & 049) and earning its keep.

Indeed. The only redeeming feature is the lime green H.

It doesn't show well in many of the pictures so far, but the black (or very dark grey) headcode panel and roof going back to above the cab doors looks particularly odd.

Is it too late for Hornby's 2022 catalogue, I wonder.

At Westbury.

I'm quite a fan of the livery.....and its better than no 50 at all....

The owners have an informative FB page and seem to welcome interest in their stock including publicising this week's test runs

Perhaps it's battleship grey, a nod to the warship names they carried!

...waiting for someone to correct me on the exact shade of RN grey

I didn’t know you got 50s at Bolton.

There were Glasgow/ Edinburgh - Liverpool/ Manchester trains that joined at Carstairs and split at Preston, vice versa going north.

The angle of light suggests this is the working south that reached Bolton around 12.45. There was a return that went north from Manchester through here 16.30 ish.

Between Bolton & Blackburn 1972

Waltons Siding 50s

I suspect this would have been a diversion, probably on a Sunday, routed S&C south from Carlisle, then Hellifield, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester Vic., around east Manchester then to Crewe. No Salford link in 1972 IIRC so interesting as to what the route around Manchester would be, presumably Ashton, Guide Bridge, Stockport??

That would have been a superb photo in colour, with the sun shining on the Class 50's clean BR blue paintwork in complete contrast to the what would have been filthy steam locos around it. But better that B&W photo than none at all. Was Mr Guppy the only person to photo the diesel during that shed visit, I wonder.

The first 50 I ever saw was 404, passing through Rugby on the up goods late one Friday night with a southbound 'liner train ;).

Since finding that picture of a 50 without MU cables I've become slightly obsessed about finding more of them so excuse my indulgence....
