A sneaky glimpse of an old favourite, at Loughborough today.

Cheers,

Phil.

Any idea why its there? Its normally something big and expensive if a heritage loco visits Loughborough!

I though 50044 had been there for a while now, understood it was associated with the installation of the power unit from one the Portuguese locomotive to replace the severely damaged power unit it had.

What happened to the one that was in it then? I take it this is another, later incident after the main generator trouble it had a fair while ago?

I would think getting one from a Portuguese loco was severely scraping the bottom of the barrel! Class 50 spares must be getting low.

Edited to say that the following answer's the question:

Quote: 50044: Failed on the mainline in July 2012. The failure was crank shaft and big end bearing related. A replacement power unit has been obtained from a Portuguese 18XX, this has been overhauled and modified to UK specification. This replacement unit was paired with teh existing Generator at Brush in Loughborough

End Quote.

Nice to see all these pictures. When I was at school I had many days in the summer holidays travelling up and down the WCML north of Preston behind class 50's, often double headed. Shame I don't have any photos of them. Suprisingly I've never seen any video of double headed 50's over Shap and Beattock - is there any?

Evening all

I'll throw my hat into the ring with a few pics of 50027 Lion.

Exactly one year later 25th April 1992, seen at Ropley after its recent preservation getting spruced up for service on the Mid Hants Railway the first time round.

Just over a month later and Lion makes it's debut on the MidHants seen here running round at Alton.

Fast forward 22 years (Yes 22!) to 8th June 2014 and '27 is seen again back at Ropley heading for Alresford on one of the MidHants regular diesel turns.

All being well after a test this weekend Lion will be running again on Saturday 23rd August and again at the MidHants diesel gala September 5-7th.

Didn't get many pics of them in all over blue, i'd like to think that's because i'm too young, but i'm afraid i'm just kidding myself! :O

Cheers,

Phil.

Pic 3, isn't that Teignmouth station?

Well. It's all very well having pictures of these when they were called Hoovers, but I mainly remember when they were English Electric Type 4s. Us kids differentiated them from the original English Electric Type 4s by calling these new interlopers in the D400 range as DP2s. When I got to working on them at Kingmoor they were called Bleeps because of the noise made by the Driver's Vigilance Device. This was way before DVD meant digital video disc.

A belated entry from me: Centurion at Paddington on Saturday 18th September 1982. The bright morning sun has always made for interesting, and occasionally challenging, lighting effects at this particular London terminus.
