Prompted by Monty's excellent pre-Tops photos I thought I'd add this - the same photo was used in the 1974 edition too....

Also inside the 1971 edition.

but i do like the front cover better.

Notice, decimal on the cover & old money inside.

I think in 1977 there was still one booked loco hauled Padd - Falmouth train.

Wasn’t it booked for a Class 50? IIRC the previous year - 1976 - a 50 was also booked but the locals shall we say managed to get a Thousand diagrammed on several occasions.

It was definitely booked for a Type 4.

Did Falmouth Docks have run round for the locos?

Yes. The loco had to reverse the stock out of the platform because the loop was before the station.

From memory, there was a Falmouth to Paddington in 1977 but not a working from Paddington, so 50027 will be arriving on the Truro to Falmouth “local” that brought the stock in. It came ecs from Laira.

EDIT: Found the photo on Flickr. The train was the 08.10 from Truro.

It was due away from Falmouth at 0910. I posted my own photos of 50002/4 on the branch in June 1976/7 on 16th January.

50027 was the first Class 50 into Cornwall, early March 1974 (by pure coincidence the last Hymek to cross the Tamar reportedly happened around the same time, 7093 on a ballast although it only got as far as Saltash). 50027 was employed on driver training hauling a pair of Mark 2 brake vehicles and an April-dated photo can be found here:

Some great early 70s Cornish photos here, courtesy of Andy Kirkham.

I've just checked through mine (I have 1968 - 1976) - quite right, 1976 edition. I'd forgotten all about that - thanks Nidge!

D449 Crewe Works 1971 by Trevor Casey

D449 Crewe Works. 15-06-1971

Very nice. Proof that they were all delivered with D prefixes (there were repeated claims years back that 435-49 were outshopped without them).

Interesting to see the MU & ETH connections all painted black at that time too.
