Grampus
Lovely picture and wow - what a shine! I wanted to say, 'that looks Glorious', but that would of course be '033! So I will settle for 'fabulous' instead! I'll get my coat!..... Best wishes, Paul

royaloak
While that looks absolutely wonderful, I just wish they would open up the sandbox fillers, they are still in there just plated over, oh and put a glass headcode front on it as well. This is not meant as a criticism because I love seeing locos in a proper colour, shiny isn't it!
Grampus
Evening all, a couple of preservation shots from me this evening. First, 'Sir Edward Hercules' ( or perhaps 'Hercules Elgar' ?!) looking a bit forlorn at the Midland Railway Centre 'do' in August 2013. And then my attempts at a couple of 'arty' shots of 'Lion' at the Mid-Hants in April 2013 ( - or, my excuse for not managing to get to a position where I could take a half-decent 'portrait' shot.) Happy days! Oh to see them on a rake of NSE Mk IIs again! Best wishes, Paul

drgj
Here are a couple of late 1970s shots, one at Newton Abbot and the other at Havant. The Havant pic reminds me of a funny daily working much later in the latter part of the 80s. There was one daily service in the early evening from Portsmouth to Waterloo that was a class 50 turn! Funny seeing it amongst all the usual emus. Class 50s had some North Wales coast turns before they moved to the Western. Anyone got any pics? rogerzilla
I spotted all of the class, although Hood (50 031) proved elusive and was finally seen, thankfully preserved, years later sitting in the cafe area at the Swindon Steam museum (!) You could hear one coming a mile away, a sound somewhere between a deep throb and a splutter (the inertial air filters had gone by that time and they were fairly fresh out of their refurbishment, so running well with no real smoke). They're the diesel everyone seems to like, even though they are basically a big blue box like all the others. I think it's the warship names.

Powerhaul 70 Pey
I saw my first class 50, 50015 Valiant, yesterday when the Missus and I took the kids on the Santa Express at Bury on the East Lancashire Railway. I don't really know anything about these loco's but it was nice to see one. 34092 City of Wells was on the front heading out to Rawtenstall and the 50 was on the rear to bring the train back to Bury. There was also another train with a steam on the front and a 37 on the rear. A really nice afternoon out and would do it again next year.

drgj
Having another look at these pictures reminded me of the view of the Vulcan Foundry from the train at Newton le Willows. It is hard to believe that the place that made so many locos that were sent all over the world, and over so long a period, is just not there now. DerekEm8
A couple of Railtours at Warrington Bank Quay with unusually 'adorned' class 50s 50049,50031 WBQ 04 March 2005 Complete with Scottie Dogs 50031,50049 WBQ 16 June 2006 Masquerading as 50028 & 50012 (on this side only)
irishmail
Seems strange to see the 50's with the 'Scottie dog' and the 'Highland Stag' on them.

Peter Kazmierczak
Going back to 1973..... 401 drifts into Crewe at 13.40 with a Euston-bound train. A couple of Class 86s, waiting to take over southbound trains, are in the distance. 401 will come off here and replaced by one of them.
Rugd1022
Lovely shot Peter! 401 was one of the few to transfer to the Western while stil lcarrying its pre-Tops number, it was one of the two crew training 50s at Old Oak.

Guest
I see that 50031 has been painted in Intercity livery!! I was a little pessimistic about this. Having now seen the photos, I must say it does look superb excellent.
