Just finished installing the old bedroom carpet into the Hobby cabin, I will need a rubber mat to go on the floor in front of the work bench area which is behind the camera position in this view.

 

This arrived in the post this morning from Gareth, something for the lock down. 2 panels, 4 rainwater hoppers, cut 12 windows and 2 sets of coping stones to be built up into a corner warehouse view blocker. Very nice crisp work Gareth, thanks again

Yes that is a negative raymw but it is best Axminster no foam backing to be found so too good to chuck and it will help with the winter insulation.  Just got the roof quilting to finish off then both will help with the winter and summer temperature changes.  I'm hoping that the rubber duckboard mat will catch all the springs, small screws and the like if dropped.

Today was a large scale weathering day for the hobby cabin.  Rain is forecast for tomorrow.

One of our club members uses an apron when he is modelling at his workbench and clamps the bottom ends to the front of his bench. This ensures that tiny dropped objects are caught before they hit the floor. Of course he has to remember the when he stands up or moves away from his chair to un clamp his apron!

Been there, done that. It can be very effective though - you either have to clamp the apron tightly so you cannot get away, or loosely so that the clamp releases and does not bring the workbench or contents with it.

Just a little update on where I am at.

1/  I'm busy insulating the roof then to complete the walls.

2/  Complete the filing/ storage areas so I can find things and stop myself accumulating multiples of the same thing.

3/  Back to playing trains.

Foil insulation going up.  It will be covered in 3 or 6mm ply

An interloper from my RC aircraft days.  It was a home build STOL aircraft used for nearest to a landing spot target which I won several times until requested to not take part any more.  This was because I had 2 barndoor flaps one either side which when fully applied I could stay airborne but with no forward movement.  Control was by the throttle increase revs to go up or decrease to come down.   So all I need to do was fly in over target apply full flap decrease revs and land bang on the target spot every time.

While doing the interior insulation of the cabin roof I've only had time to peruse the web pages on here and other similar sites.

I have been particularly taken with Rod's West Kirby Town's trackwork particularly that opposite the signal box.

So much so that I am thinking if using it as a basis for another layout just because the point work intrigues me.

Examples from several sources below with the 3rd one down [Rod's WKT layout] and my favourite as of now.

I have started to draw something up and it will be my intention to keep the layout I am finishing just now  and build my next one with it.  This will have some size constraints on it or it may mean I will have to swap the layout places over.

There will not be any through traffic so a station pilot & or a run around loop will be needed. 

I also would like to make it a little more goods interesting as well so not all passenger traffic but a mixture, something for me to mull over.

Hello a question???

I've had some mixed results with keeping my point switching all nice and free from ballast when laying the track down.

 

This time I intend to glue ballast up to the sleeper just before and from the one beyond the slide bar and keep that bar position completely free of ballast.  I am a little worried what this will look like but I'm going to give it a go.

 

Does anybody have any another ways of doing this operation?

I did mine in conventional fashion but for the slide bar area I added a tiny bit of ballast at a time and kept working the point and moved any offending grains out of the way with a paint brush. No problems.

I might try using un-diluted PVA when I am near to the slide bar in an attempt to stop the glue migrating and binding everything up.  I think it is important to keep all the ballast level or just below the sleeper and brush away from the point slide bar area.

I expect to be making a start base painting all the track up next weekend as I have still got a little more to do on the roof insulation before then. 

Then it will be BALLASTING time.

If you use real granite ballast (eg Javis) it’ll take a greenish tinge if you use PVA.  I use latex which works fine and does not turn your ballast curious colours!

 

its also easier to get it off if needed, it’ll peel, unlike PVA which sets rock hard
 

the stuff I’ve been using is from Screwfix, though surely other suppliers exist.   I water it down about half & half, and apply after spraying the ballast with a mister.  It wets through very quickly, but sometimes requires a second application.

Thanks Simon I am aware of the green tinge from PVA on certain ballast and have purchased accordingly.

I do have a bulk purchase of Copydex for track laying purposes as I think it also will help with some deadening of track noise too.

One concern is when drilling holes through it is that it will grab the bit and peel everything up unless I remember to cut an X where I want to drill.with a modelling knife first.

I wasn't aware or had forgotten that you can water down the latex so all my previous goes were with 100% latex which would make the above concern worse.  I'll go and check my results to see what my conclusions were.

I haven't had any issues with drilling it - and it does peel away when you need to make alterations.

 

I have found that a good pre-wetting is most important, a small drop of washing up liquid in a whole mist sprayer, and getting quite generous with this before adding the latex.

Just had a speedy Delivery from Gareth [O Gauge from a standing start] from these forums see photo following>>>.

 

Beautifully moulded with its brickwork fine detail included, if I get a chance today I'll give it a Halfords red brick spray over.

Gareth is an expert in making up these mouldings see his forum posts on his layout for his own use and he kindly agreed to make some up for me which I paid for of course.

Mojo on its way back after a period of real life issues only to be wacked in the nuts by the software update that kept me out of here until today.

It made a right mess of my w10 PC in not allowing me to see photos, not being able to reply to topics, mis-aligned all over the page, unable to PM all of which left me unable to contact Andy for guidance.   

Martin Wynne 85A models and Templot has knowledge of the how's and why's of server software lives local to me so Ill give him a call to see why this software on my pc was such a pig when all other forums I visit were still fully accessible.
